Although softening/melting tests are widely used to assess ferrous material properties in the cohesive zone of a blast furnace,there is little understanding of the mechanisms causing the softened bed to densify.Quenched beds of three acid feed materials–a porous hematite goethite lump（PHGL）,a dense high silica lump（DHSL）and a high silica pellet（HSP）-were used to provide information on the role of silica and porosity on softening and melting behavior.Reduction of all three materials is topochemical,resulting in the formation of a distinct metallic iron shell and a wustite core.The efficiency of the wustite to iron reduction process is dependent on the penetration of reducing gas through the shell and the structure of the core.This is enhanced for samples with higher porosity and low silica content,which minimizes the formation of fayalite,a low melting compound formed from the reaction of silica with iron oxide.With higher levels of fayalite,the core can become sealed off from the reducing gases,leading to greater levels of wustite that must undergo direct reduction at temperatures above 1000℃.Furthermore,the presence of fayalite in significant quantities can act as a lubricant between particles,facilitating sliding and bed densification further reducing bed permeability and reduction efficiency.For the three materials tested,the higher porosity and lower silica content of the PHGL improved the low temperature reducibility of the sample relative to DHSL and HSP,leaving much less wustite for direct reduction.This study also shows that increasing the reduction rate of wustite to iron also has two other benefits.Firstly,with higher reducibility,fayalite levels decrease because iron oxide,not metallic iron,is required in its formation.Secondly,the level of exuded liquid wustite in inter-particle pores decreases which will improve cohesive zone permeability.These results suggest that as a complementary feed to basic sinter,a porous low-silica lump such as PHGL should yield better performance in a blast furnace.

Systematic Radio Telescope Alignment Using Portable Fringe Projection Profilometry

In 2019,the Event Horizon Telescope(EHT)released the first-ever image of a black hole event horizon.Astronomers are now aiming for higher angular resolutions of distant targets,like black holes,to understand more about the fundamental laws of gravity that govern our universe.To achieve this higher resolution and increased sensitivity,larger radio telescopes are needed to operate at higher frequencies and in larger quantities.Projects like the next-generation Very Large Array(ngVLA)and the Square-Kilometer Array(SKA)require building hundreds of telescopes with diameters greater than 10 ms over the next decade.This has a twofold effect.Radio telescope surfaces need to be more accurate to operate at higher frequencies,and the logistics involved in maintaining a radio telescope need to be simplified to support them properly in large quantities.Both of these problems can be solved with improved methods for surface metrology that are faster and more accurate with a higher resolution.This leads to faster and more accurate panel alignment and,therefore,a more productive observatory.In this paper,we present the use of binocular fringe projection profilometry as a solution to this problem and demonstrate it by aligning two panels on a 3-m radio telescope dish.The measurement takes only 10 min and directly delivers feedback on the tip,tilt,and piston of each panel to create the ideal reflector shape.

Malicious software has no remorse when it targets different organizations, regardless of its forms [1]. Ransomware [2] has caused serious issues in different industries, especially in healthcare. The existing report shows that 34% of ransomware is targeting healthcare organizations. Nowadays, criminals prefer crypto-jacking over ransomware (which also relies on cryptocurrency for anonymous ransom payments).

Exploring technologies to better link physical evidence and digital information for disaster victim identification

Disaster victim identification(DVI)entails a protracted process of evidence collection and data matching to reconcile physical remains with victim identity.Technology is critical to DVI by enabling the linkage of physical evidence to information.However,labelling physical remains and collecting data at the scene are dominated by low-technology paper-based practices.We ask,how can technology help us tag and track the victims of disaster?Our response to this question has two parts.First,we conducted a human–computer interaction led investigation into the systematic factors impacting DVI tagging and tracking processes.Through interviews with Australian DVI practitioners,we explored how technologies to improve linkage might fit with prevailing work practices and preferences;practical and social considerations;and existing systems and processes.We focused on tagging and tracking activities throughout the DVI process.Using insights from these interviews and relevant literature,we identified four critical themes:protocols and training;stress and stressors;the plurality of information capture and management systems;and practicalities and constraints.Second,these findings were iteratively discussed by the authors,who have combined expertise across electronics,data science,cybersecurity,human–computer interaction and forensic pathology.We applied the themes identified in the first part of the investigation to critically review technologies that could support DVI practitioners by enhancing DVI processes that link physical evidence to information.This resulted in an overview of candidate technologies matched with consideration of their key attributes.This study recognises the importance of considering human factors that can affect technology adoption into existing practices.Consequently,we provide a searchable table(as Supplementary information)that relates technologies to the key considerations and attributes relevant to DVI practice,for readers to apply to their own context.While this research directly contributes to DVI,i

Hot aqueous leaf extract of Lasianthera africana(Icacinaceae) attenuates rifampicin-isoniazid-induced hepatotoxicity

Objectives： The aim of this study is to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Lasianthera africana （lcacinaceae） against isoniazid （INH） and rifampicin （RlF）-induced liver damage in rats. Methods： The hepatoprotective effects of hot aqueous L. africana （HALA） leaf extract （0.1-1 g/kg） and sily-matin （50 mg/kg） were assessed in a model of oxidative liver damage induced by RIF and INH （100 mg/kg each） in Wistar rats for 28 days. Biochemical markers of hepatic damage such as alanine aminotrans- ferase （ALT）, aspartate aminotransferase （AST） and alkaline phosphatase （ALP） were assessed. The antiox- idant statuses of plasma glutathione peroxidase （GSPx）, glutathione reductase （GSH）, catalase （CAT） and superoxide dismutase （SOD） and lipid peroxidation were evaluated. Results： The pretreatment of INH and RIF decreased hematological indices and the antioxidant levels （P〈 0.001） and increased the levels of liver marker enzymes （P〈 0.001）. However, pretreatment with HALA extract and silymarin provoked significant elevation of hematological indices. The levels of AST, ALT, and ALP were depressed （P 〈 0.001 ）. Total triglycerides, total cholesterol, total bilirubin and low-density lipoprotein were decreased （P 〈 0.001）. However, high-density lipoprotein, bicarbonate, and electrolytes like chloride and potassium were elevated （P 〈 0.001）, but sodium was depressed （P 〈 0.05）. Additionally, GSH, GSPx, SOD and CAT were elevated （P 〈 0.01） and malondialdehyde was depressed （P 〈 0.001 ） when compared to the R1F-INH-treated rats. Histopathological evaluations support hepatoprotective activity. Conclusion： This study demonstrated that HALA leaf extract attenuated RIF-INH-induced hepatotoxicity. L, africana could be exploited in management of RIF-INH-induced hepatitis.

A conceptual framework and an empirical test of complementarity and facilitation with respect to phosphorus uptake by plant species mixtures

Plant species have different traits for mobilizing sparingly soluble phosphorus (P) resources,which could potentially lead to overyielding in P uptake by plant species mixtures compared to monocultures due to higher P uptake as a result of resource (P) partitioning and facilitation.However,there is circumstantial evidence at best for overyielding as a result of these mechanisms.Overyielding (the outcome) is easily confused with underlying mechanisms because of unclear definitions.We aimed to define a conceptual framework to separate outcome from underlying mechanisms and test it for facilitation and complementarity with respect to P acquisition by three plant species combinations grown on four soils.Our conceptual framework describes both mechanisms of complementarity and facilitation and outcomes (overyielding of mixtures or no overyielding) depending on the competitive ability of the species to uptake the mobilized P.Millet/chickpea mixtures were grown in pots on two calcareous soils mixed with calcium-bound P (CaP) and phytate P (PhyP).Cabbage/faba bean mixtures were grown on both acid and neutral soils mixed with P-coated iron (hydr)oxide (FeP) and PhyP.Wheat/maize mixtures were grown on all four soils.Rhizosphere carboxylate concentration and acid phosphatase activity (mechanisms) as well as plant P uptake and biomass (outcome) were determined for monocultures rhizosphere and species mixtures.Facilitation of P uptake occurred in millet/chickpea mixtures on one calcareous soil.We found no indications for P acquisition from different P sources,neither in millet/chickpea,nor in cabbage/faba bean mixtures.Cabbage and faba bean on the neutral soil differed in rhizosphere acid phosphatase activity and carboxylate concentration,but showed no overyielding.Wheat and maize,with similar root exudates,showed overyielding (the observed P uptake being 22%higher than the expected P uptake) on one calcareous soil.We concluded that although differences in plant physiological traits (root exudates) provide necessary condition

Modulation of ice ages via precession and dust-albedo feedbacks

We present here a simple and novel proposal for the modulation and rhythm of ice-ages and interglacials during the late Pleistocene. While the standard Milankovitch-precession theory fails to explain the long intervals between interglacials, these can be accounted for by a novel forcing and feedback system involving CO2, dust and albedo. During the glacial period, the high albedo of the northern ice sheets drives down global temperatures and CO2 concentrations, despite subsequent precessional forcing maxima. Over the following millennia more CO2 is sequestered in the oceans and atmospheric concentrations eventually reach a critical minima of about 200 ppm, which combined with arid conditions, causes a die-back of temperate and boreal forests and grasslands, especially at high altitude. The ensuing soil erosion generates dust storms, resulting in increased dust deposition and lower albedo on the northern ice sheets. As northern hemisphere insolation increases during the next Milankovitch cycle, the dust-laden ice-sheets absorb considerably more insolation and undergo rapid melting, which forces the climate into an interglacial period. The proposed mechanism is simple, robust, and comprehensive in its scope, and its key elements are well supported by empirical evidence.

Investigation of volatile methyl siloxanes in biogas and the ambient environment in a landfill

Landfill biogas is a potential alternative for fossil fuel,but the containing impurities,volatile methyl siloxanes(simplified as siloxanes),often cause serious problems in gas turbines when applied to generate electricity.In this research,a collecting and analyzing method based on solvent adsorption and purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was established to determine the siloxanes in biogas from a landfill in Jinan,China,and adjacent ambient samples,such as soil,air,and leachate of the landfill.The results showed that,octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(D4)and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane(D5)accounted for 63%of total siloxanes;and without considering D4 and D5,the order of detected siloxanes in concentration was found relating to Gibbs free energies of molecules,namely that higher abundant siloxane(except for D4 and D5)usually had lower Gibbs free energy.Additionally,the mass ratio between D4 and octamethyltrisiloxane(L3)in the bio gas varied with different garbage age in landfills,possibly revealing the breaking-down of larger siloxane molecules with time.The samples,which were collected from environmental samples adjacent to the landfill,such as soil,water,and air,presented much higher siloxane level than urban or rural area away from landfills.The current H2 S scrubber of the landfill biogas could decrease the total siloxanes from 10.7 to 5.75 mg/m^3 due to Fe2 O3 and a refrigerant drier in a purification system and cyclic siloxanes were more easily removed than linear ones.
