＜正＞model studies into the consequences of flooding events are usually focused on damage to buildings, infrastructure, economic losses and casualties thus ignoring the risk of environmental damage. In this project, a model study was made to assess the environmental consequences of the release of pollutants during the flooding of a polder district in the Netherlands following a river dike breach. A conceptual framework was established for the sequence of events or ’chain reaction’ during a flood. A dike breach is formed, the scour of the flood waters and/or high water levels may damage or destroy objects like homes, industrial complexes and farms;damaged objects release hazardous substances that will be dispersed in the flood waters including suspended matter and the released chemicals will affect people and ecosystems in the inundated area. The analyses were made in the 50,000 ha case study area ’Krimpen’, located in the western Netherlands near the cities of Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague. The simulated period of flooding was ten days. The failure of objects where hazardous chemicals are stocked was linked to water height and velocity. The release and migration of pollutants like volatile aromatics, germs, sum PAH, PCB, LNAPL, DNAPL, heavy metals, nutrients and pesticides was simulated with an innovative, integrated modelling tool. The assessed impact of the pollutants on the environment was found to be substantial. Small yet numerous sources like cars may release substantial amounts of toxic chemicals to the flood waters and suspended sediments during and after the flood, while large installations like chemical plants only give problems near the dike breach where high flow velocities prevail. The simulated concentrations of toxic substances frequently exceeded the legal threshold levels.

modeling regional landslide susceptibility using dynamic soil moisture profiles

A landslide susceptibility mapping study was performed using dynamic hillslope hydrology. The modified infinite slope stability model that directly includes vadose zone soil moisture(Sm) was applied at Cleveland Corral, California, US and Krishnabhir, Dhading, Nepal. The variable infiltration capacity(VIC-3L) model simulated vadose zone soil moisture and the wetness index hydrologic model simulated groundwater(gW). The gW model predictions had a 75% NASH-Sutcliffe efficiency when compared to California's in-situ gW measurements. The model performed best during the wet season. Using predicted gW and VIC-3L vadose zone Sm, the developed landslide susceptibility maps showed very good agreement with mapped landslides at each study region. Previous quasi-dynamic model predictions of Nepal's hazardous areas during extreme rainfall events were enhanced to improve the spatial characterization and provide the timing of hazardous conditions.

Synchronization of Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory methods

Weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO)methods have been developed to simultaneously provide robust shock-capturing in compressible fluid flow and avoid excessive damping of fine-scale flow features such as *** certain conditions in compressible turbulence,however,numerical dissipation remains unacceptably high even after optimization of the linear component that dominates in smooth *** the nonlinear error that remains,we demonstrate that a large fraction is generated by a“synchronization deficiency”that interferes with the expression of theoretically predicted numerical performance characteristics when the WENO adaptation mechanism is *** deficiency is illustrated numerically in simulations of a linearly advected sinusoidal wave and the Shu-Osher problem[***.,83(1989),pp.32-78].It is shown that attempting to correct this deficiency through forcible synchronization results in violation of *** conclude that,for the given choice of candidate stencils,the synchronization deficiency cannot be adequately resolved under the current WENO smoothness measurement technique.

Physical activity during pregnancy and the role of theory in promoting positive behavior change:A systematic review

Background: Physical activity(PA) during pregnancy provides physical and psychological benefits for mother and child. U.S. guidelines recommend ≥30 min of moderate exercise for healthy pregnant women most days of the week; however, most women do not meet these recommendations. Theory assists in identifying salient determinants of health behavior to guide health promotion interventions; however, the application of theory to examine PA among pregnant women has not been examined cohesively among multiple levels of influence(e.g.,intrapersonal, interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, and organizational/political). Subsequently, this systematic review aims to identify and evaluate the use of health behavior theory in studies that examine PA during ***: Articles published before July 2014 were obtained from Pub med and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria applied were:(1) empiricallybased;(2) peer-reviewed;(3) measured factors related to PA;(4) comprised a pregnant sample; and(5) applied theory. Fourteen studies were included. Each study's application of theory and theoretical constructs were ***: Various theories were utilized to explain and predict PA during pregnancy; yet, the majority of these studies only focused on intrapersonal level determinants. Five theoretical frameworks were applied across the studies—all but one at the intrapersonal level. Few determinants identified were from the interpersonal, neighborhood/environmental, or organizational/political ***: This systematic review synthesized the literature on theoretical constructs related to PA during pregnancy. Interpersonal, community,and societal levels remain understudied. Future research should employ theory-driven multi-level determinants of PA to reflect the interacting factors influencing PA during this critical period in the life course.

Estrogens play important roles in the development and progression of multiple tumor *** evidence points to the significance of estrogen action not only in tumors of hormonally regulated tissues such as the breast,endometrium and ovary,but also in the development of colorectal cancer(CRC).The effects of estrogens in physiological and pathophysiological conditions are mediated by the nuclear estrogen receptorsαandβ,as well as the membranebound g protein-coupled estrogen receptor(gPER).The roles of gPER in CRC development and progression,however,remain poorly *** on the functions of gPER in the colon have shown that this estrogen receptor regulates colonic motility as well as immune responses in CRC-associated diseases,such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative *** is also involved in cell cycle regulation,endoplasmic reticulum stress,proliferation,apoptosis,vascularization,cell migration,and the regulation of fatty acid and estrogen metabolism in CRC ***,multiple lines of evidence suggest that gPER may play an important role in colorectal *** this review,we present the current state of knowledge regarding the contribution of gPER to colon function and CRC.

Lim kinase,a bi-functional effector in injury-induced structural plasticity of synapses

The structural plasticity of synaptic terminals contributes to normal nervous system function but also to neural degeneration, in the form of terminal retraction, and regeneration, due to process growth. Synaptic morphological change is mediated through the actin cytoskeleton, which is enriched in axonal and dendritic terminals. Whereas the three RhogTPases, RhoA, Cdc42 and Rac, function as upstream signaling nodes sensitive to extracellular stimuli, LImK-cofilin activity serves as a common downstream effector to up-regulate actin turnover, which is necessary for both polymerization and depolymerization. The dual effects of LImK activity make LImK a potential target of therapeutic intervention for iniury-induced synaptic plasticity, as LImK inhibition can stabilize actin cytoskeleton and preserve existing structure. This therapeutic benefit of LImK inhibition has been demonstrated in animal models of injury-induced axon retraction and neuritic sprouting by rod photoreceptors. A better understanding of the regulation of LImK-cofilin activity and the interaction with the microtubular cytoskeleton may open new ways to promote synaptic regeneration that can benefit neuronal degenerative disease.

Assessing animal individuality:links between personality and laterality in pigs

Animal individuality is challenging to explain because individual differences are regulated by multiple selective forces that lead to unique combinations of *** instance,the study of personality,a core aspect of individuality,may benefit from integrating other factors underlying individual differences,such as lateralized cerebral ***,the approach-withdrawal hypothesis(the left hemisphere controls approach behavior,the right hemisphere controls withdrawal behavior),may account for differences in boldness or exploration between left and right hemispheric dominant *** analyze the relationships between personality and laterality we tested 80 male piglets with established laterality patterns for 2 motor functions(tail curling direction and the side of the snout used for manipulation)and a combined classification integrating both motor functions using cluster *** analyzed basal salivary testosterone and cortisol along with their behavior in standardized tests as pre-established indicators of different personality traits(Boldness,Exploration,Activity,Sociability,and Coping).We found that the direction of the single motor biases showed significant associations with few personality ***,the combined laterality classification showed more,and more robust,significant associations with different personality traits compared with the single motor *** results supported the approachwithdrawal hypothesis because right-biased pigs were bolder and more explorative in a context of ***,right-biased pigs were more sociable than left-biased ***,the present study indicates that personality is indeed related to lateralized cerebral processing and provides insight into the multifactorial nature of individuality.
