Public urban greenery greatly contributes to the residential and tourist value of cities in the Gulf Region,but due to the hyper-arid climatic conditions,the cost of irrigation and plant maintenance is very *** strategies to reduce the monetary and ecological costs involve the cultivation of native xerophytic plantations,and/or the use of soil improvers to increase water-and nutrient-holding capacity of the sandy *** soil improvers based on mineral,organic,or synthetic materials have entered the United Arab Emirates(UAE)market in recent years,but there is considerable uncertainty about how they should best be used in combination with ornamental plant stands involving xerophytic native *** present study investigated the effect of soil amendment and deep pipe irrigation on perennial ornamental plant stands involving native plants(Tephrosia appolinea(Gel.)Link in combination with Aerva javanica(Burm.f.)*** Schult.)and native-exotic plants(*** in combination with Ruelia simplex ***)either or not topsoil and subsoil amendment with bentonite and hydrophobic sand under the irrigation water supply of less than 50%of reference evapotranspiration(ET0).After one year of cultivation,*** and ***(native ***)produced high biomass and exhibited high water use efficiency(WUE)as compared with *** and ***(native ***)combination given that no significant differences were found under the soil amendment *** stands thrived under irrigation water supply far below what is usually supplied to exotic ornamental stands in public parks of the Al Ain City,the ***,subsoil amendment in combination with deep pipe irrigation reduced the occurrence of weeds and increased the overall plant rooting *** results suggest that subsoil amendment and irrigation up to 60-80 cm depth can potentially control ephemeral weed infestation,which is a great challenge in various plant production systems of the

Designing cost-effective and high-performing metal catalysts is significant for many renewable energy conversion *** metal loading without sacrificing activity and durability is highly desired for the catalyst design,especially for those reactions where the noble metals deliver the best catalyzing ***-atom catalysts(SACs)with maximal metalatom utilization,homogeneous and tailorable active sites have emerged as promising catalyst candidates,where the local coordination structures of the metal atoms in SACs largely determine the reaction *** design strategies of constructing strong metal-support interactions can stabilize the individual metal atoms in SACs,but present obstacles to provide a flexible manipulation platform for elaborately tailoring the coordination structures to achieve performance optimization towards a specifically targeted ***,for the proof-of-concept study,we report a novel design of SAC with iridium(Ir)single atoms supported on conjugated polymer,in which the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates on Ir atoms and the reaction kinetics towards acidic water oxidation can be readily optimized through modulating the formed cation-πinteractions that can be tailored by adjusting the molecular structures of conjugated *** strategy establishes a general route to develop targeted SACs for various catalytic reactions.

The application of a gate voltage to control the superconducting current flowing through a nanoscale superconducting constriction,named as gate-controlled supercurrent(GCS),has raised great interest for fundamental and technological *** gain a deeper understanding of this effect and develop superconducting technologies based on it,the material and physical parameters crucial for the GCS effect must be ***-down fabrication protocols should also be optimized to increase device scalability,although studies suggest that top-down fabricated devices are more resilient to show a ***,we investigate gated superconducting nanobridges made with a top-down fabrication process from thin films of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor niobium rhenium with varying ratios of the constituents(NbRe).Unlike other devices previously reported and made with a top-down approach,our NbRe devices systematically exhibit a GCS effect when they were fabricated from NbRe thin films with small grain size and etched in specific *** observations pave the way for the realization of top-down-made GCS devices with high *** results also imply that physical parameters like structural disorder and surface physical properties of the nanobridges,which can be in turn modified by the fabrication process,are crucial for a GCS observation,providing therefore also important insights into the physics underlying the GCS effect.

P-glycoprotein multidrug transporter in inflammatory bowel diseases: More questions than answers

The gastrointestinal barrier is constantly exposed to numerous environmental substrates that are foreign and potentially harmful. These xenobiotics can cause shifts in the intestinal microbiota composition, affect mucosal immune responses, disturb tissue integrity and impair regeneration. The multidrug transporter ABCB1/MDR1 p-glycoprotein (p-gp) plays a key role at the front line of host defence by efficiently protecting the gastrointestinal barrier from xenobiotic accumulation. This Editorial discusses how altered expression and function of ABCB1/MDR1 p-gp may contribute to the development and persistence of chronic intestinal inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Recent evidence implies multiple interactions between intestinal microbiota, innate immunity and xenobiotic metabolism via p-gp. While decreased efflux activity may promote disease susceptibility and drug toxicity, increased efflux activity may confer resistance to therapeutic drugs in IBD. Mice deficient in MDR1 A develop spontaneously chronic colitis, providing a highly valuable murine IBD model for the study of intestinal epithelial barrier function, immunoregulation, infectious co-triggers and novel therapeutic approaches. Possible associations of human ABCB1 gene polymorphisms with IBD susceptibility have been evaluated, but results are inconsistent. Future studies must focus on further elucidation of the pathophysiological relevance and immunological functions of p-gp and how its ambiguous effects could be therapeutically targeted in IBD.

Terrestrial floras underwent important changes during the Lopingian （Late Permian）, Early Triassic, and Middle Triassic, i.e., before, during, and after the end-Permian mass extinction. An accurate account of these developments requires reliable correlation. Macrofossils of land plants can only provide a low-resolution biostratigraphy, while detailed zonation schemes based on palynomorphs are available for many regions. Their applicability is still limited due to several factors, such as （micro-）floral provincialism, a lack of suitable marker taxa commonly occurring at important boundaries, and in many cases a lack of independent age control. Nevertheless, these palynostratigraphic schemes are regularly used for dating and correlation of successions between different regions. To support such efforts, the biozonation schemes based on palynomorphs from the Lopingian up to and including the Middle Triassic from across the world are summarized and revised. Thus, a consistent correlation of palynozones with the currently recognized international stages is established.

Orotic Acid, More Than Just an Intermediate of Pyrimidine de novo Synthesis

It is timely to consider the many facets of the small molecule orotic acid （OA）, which is well-known as an essential intermediate of pyrimidine de novo synthesis. In addition, it can be taken up by erythrocytes and hepatocytes for conversion into uridine and for use in the pyrimidine recycling pathway. We discuss the link between dietary orotate and fatty liver in rats, and the potential for the alleviation of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. We address the development of orotate derivatives for application as anti-pyrimidine drugs, and of com- plexes with metal ions and organic cations to assist therapies of metabolic syndromes. Recent genetic data link human Miller syndrome to defects in the dihydroorotate dehydrogenase （DHODH） gene, hence to depleted orotate production. Another defect in pyrimidine biosynthesis, the orotic aciduria arising in humans and cattle with a deficiency of UMP synthase （UMPS）, has different symptoms. More recent work leads us to conclude that OA may have a role in regulating gene transcription.

Histological examination of carotid artery tissue in cases of ligature strangulation and hanging

Violence against the neck can result in a range of macromorphological and micromorphological ***,the forensic relevance of the carotid sinus in cases of violence against the neck remains *** this follow-up study of 22 cases of suicidal and accidental strangulations,carotid bifurcations were examined histologically for morphological changes implying direct trauma,including haemorrhage and immunohistochemical expression of heat-shock proteins 27,60,and 70 and *** cases were compared with a control group(82 cases)without neck compression or head trauma and with variable causes of *** relevant histopathological findings implying direct trauma of the carotid bifurcation were *** cases showed positive aquaporin-3 staining and only five cases showed positive heat-shock protein-27 staining,all of which were *** massive trauma of the carotid bifurcation,histological alterations cannot be *** signs of rapid death,findings of acute circulatory failure,macromorphological and micromorphological findings of neck compression,and reliable markers indicating relevant impact on the carotid bifurcation the diagnosis of a lethal reflex cannot be verified.

Microscopic examination of pituitary glands in cases of fatal accidental hypothermia

In cases of death caused by hypothermia,histological analysis can be used to determine the cause of *** histological alterations of the pituitary glands in hypothermia have been reported in the literature,including haemorrhage,hyperaemia and cellular vacuolization of cells in the anterior *** the present study,the validity of these morphological alterations as markers for fatal accidental hypothermia was investigated in autopsy material.A total of 34 pituitary glands in cases of verified fatal accidental hypothermia were examined histologically(haematoxylin and eosin,ferric,azan)and immunohistochemically(LCA,ACTH,C5b-9).The findings were compared with 61 cases in a control *** was found in 50.0%of the study group cases and 59.0% of the control group *** vacuolization was observed in one case(2.9%)in the study group and one case(1.6%)in the control *** or recent haemorrhage in the glandular tissue was never *** our study,the histopathological characteristics described in the literature as pathognomonic for hypothermia could not be ***,histological differences in the pituitary glands between fatal hypothermia cases and control group cases were not observed.
