A critical literature review of bioretention research for stormwater management in cold climate and future research recommendations

Bioretention is a popular best management practice of low impact development that el/ecUvely restores urban hydrologic characteristics to those ofpredevelopment and improves water quality prior to conveyance to surface waters. This is achieved by utilizing an engineered system containing a surface layer of mulch, a thick soil media often amended with a variety of materials to improve water oualitv, a variety of vegetation, and underdrains, depending on the surrounding soil *** systems have been studied quite extensively for warm climate applications, but ctata strongly supporting their long-tema efficacy and application in cold climates is sparse. Although it is apparent that biorelention is an effective stormwater management system, its design in cold climate needs further research. Existing cold climate research has shown that coarser media is required to prevent concrete frost from forming. For spring, summer and fall seasons, if sufficient permeability exists to drain the system prior to freezing, peak flow and volume reduction can be maintained. Additionally. contaminants that are removed via filtration are also not impacted by cold climates. In contrary, dissolved contaminants, nutrients, and organics are significantly more variable in their ability to be removed or degraded via bioretention in colder temperatures. Winter road maintenance salts have been shown to negatively impact the removal of some contaminants and positively impact others, while their effects on properly selected vegetation or bacteria health are also not well understood. Research in these water quality aspects has been inconsistent and therefore requires further study.

Dear Editor, Insect Science recently published a meta-analysis that tried to test support for the slow-growth high-mortality （hereafter SG-HM） hypothesis （chen＆ chen, 2018）. Meta-analysis is a powerful statistical tool used to quantitatively compare and summarize multiple studies （Arnqvist ＆ Wooster, 1995）. However, results from a meta-analysis must be carefully interpreted when only limited sample sizes are available. Incidence and clinical correlates of anger attacks in Chinese patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Objective: Anger attacks have been observed in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD), often triggered by obsessional triggers. However, few studies have reported the clinical characteristics and correlates of anger attacks among Chinese patients with OCD. Methods: A total of 90 adults with a primary diagnosis of OCD, ranging from 15 to 78 years old, participated in the study. Participants were administered the Rage Outbursts and Anger Rating Scale(ROARS), Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale-Second Edition, and Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale by a trained clinician. Patients completed the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21. Results: A total of 31.3% of participants reported anger outbursts in the past week, and ROARS scores had no significant correlation with age, duration of illness, OCD severity, depression, or stress. However, ROARS scores were negatively related to education level, and positively related to obsessing symptoms and anxiety. Conclusions: These data suggest that anger attacks are relatively common in Chinese patients with OCD. The severity of anger attacks is related to educational level, obsessing symptoms, and anxiety, which may be a latent variable reflecting executive functioning and emotion regulation skills.

Immunoglobulin G against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG-Ig G) is detectable in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder(NMOSD) without aquaporin-4 Ig G(AQP4-Ig G), but its pathogenicity remains *** this study, we explored the pathogenic mechanisms of MOG-Ig G in vitro and in vivo and compared them with those of AQP4-Ig G. MOG-Ig G-positive serum induced complement activation and cell death in human embryonic kidney(HEK)-293 T cells transfected with human MOG. In C57 BL/6 mice and Sprague-Dawley rats, MOG-Ig G only caused lesions in the presence of complement. Interestingly, AQP4-Ig G induced astroglial damage, while MOGIg G mainly caused myelin loss. MOG-Ig G also induced astrocyte damage in mouse brains in the presence ofcomplement. Importantly, we also observed ultrastructural changes induced by MOG-Ig G and AQP4-Ig G. These findings suggest that MOG-Ig G directly mediates cell death by activating complement in vitro and producing NMOSDlike lesions in vivo. AQP4-Ig G directly targets astrocytes,while MOG-Ig G mainly damages oligodendrocytes.

When one repeats a motor act, the executions vary as a result of variable expression in the activity of the behavior mediating neurons. Although there is a debate as to its functional significance, variability must originate, at least in part, from mechanisms in the corresponding network. Previously, there are some computational and molecular studies on network variability. Despite these efforts, circuit and synaptic mechanisms are not well understood. In part, this is a reflection of the fact that it is inherently difficult to study phenomena that are variably expressed. We study variability in the Aplysia feeding motor system, where behavioral and motoneuronal variability has been well characterized. Here, we report the identification of a command-like neuron, cerebral-buccal interneuron-10（CBI-10）, that is active during feeding behavior. We demonstrate that CBI-10 drives motor programs that are more variable than programs driven by a previously-identified command-like neuron, CBI-2. The difference in variability is partly attributable to differences in the strength of synaptic connections between command-like neurons and pattern-generating interneurons that excite motoneurons. One of these interneurons, B34, fires at a relatively low frequency when programs are triggered by CBI-10. In contrast, the B34 firing frequency is higher when programs are triggered by CBI-2. Importantly, stimulation of CBI-10 together with subthreshold depolarization of B34 makes programs less variable, and more similar to programs evoked by CBI-2. This suggests an obligatory role of B34 in generating variability when programs are induced by CBI-10. Our results establish how variability may arise through specific mechanisms in a single feedforward network. These findings are likely to be broadly relevant. Many neural circuits, including cortical circuits, are feedforward and show various degrees of variability.

To understand molecular and structural mechanisms of TDP-43 protein aggregation in disease pathogenesis,we have begun to characterize biochemical and biophysical features of the wild-type and ALS-associated mutant TDP-43 peptides using a variety of *** TDP-43 peptides flanking residue 315 form amyloid fibrils detected by kinetic thioflavin-T(ThT) binding fluorescence and time-lapse atomic force microscope(AFM).Pre-formed fibrillar seeds of a mutant peptide were found to cross-seed fibril formation of peptides that are not liable to form *** secondary structures of the peptides were compared by Far-UV circular dichroism(CD) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),and revealed an anti-parallel beta-sheet structure for a mutant *** spectroscopy was used to further characterize the conformation of this mutant peptide in solution,and a set of the long-range NOEs were observed consistent with the above biophysical *** experimental data provide evidences for the similarities between TDP-43 and amyloid-like proteins,such as Aβ,α-Syn and prion proteins, raising the possibility that TDP-43 derivatives may cause disease phenotype spreading among neighboring neurons.
