Microbial Community with Potential for Metal Release Isolated from Palca Mine Tailings Pond in Peru

The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

The Contribution of Nutrients and Water Properties to the Carbonate System in Three Particular Areas of the Tropical Atlantic (NE-BRAZIL)

Tropical waters show different regional aspects due to specificities in their nutrient biogeochemical cycles, which can affect the carbon system and influence their regional role as sinks or sources of CO2. This study was performed on particular tropical areas that present a different seasonal behaviour related to the carbon cycle observed in the late rainy season (July 2013). Understanding the CO2 drawdown and outgassing potential in these areas is needed to call attention to more long-term monitoring efforts and protect understudied tropical coastal systems more efficiently. This study is focused on nutrient values, hydrological data, biogeochemical carbon behaviour linked to the carbonate system and includes estimates of CO2 fluxes in three contrasting areas off the northeastern Brazilian shelf: 1) an urbanised estuary (Recife-REC), 2) a coastal Island (Itamaracá-ITA) and 3) an oceanic archipelago (Fernando de Noronha-FN). In general, REC acted as a source, while ITA and FN as carbon sinks. In ITA, despite the high DIC and Total Alkalinity observed (mean ~2360 μmol·kg-1), the sink is associated with an effective cascading of atmospheric CO2 associated with turbulent shallow waters coupled with biogenic removal of and precipitation of CaCO3 by coralline algae. FN acted as a sink, linked to minor decreases in Total Alkalinity (mean~2295 μmol·kg-1) influenced by ammonium-based primary production, nitrogen fixation and sporadic entrainment of nutrient rich waters in the upper thermocline. More studies in different western tropical Atlantic coastal systems can improve the knowledge of tropical shelf seas and their contribution to the ocean carbon budget under specific regional trophic regimes.

River Flows Influence on Nutrients (Si, N and P) and Fecal Coliforms (E. coli) in Two Tributaries of the Estuarine Channel of Bertioga (Santos Estuary, São Paulo, Brazil)

Sewage introduction into rivers has altered the physical and chemical properties of waters and also the microbial metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the Escherichia coli and nutrient concentrations in the Maratuãand Crumaú rivers (Santos Estuary, Brazil) during two periods with distinct magnitudes of freshwater runoff, verifying possible relation of abiotic changes with the microbial metabolism. Water sampling was performed in October/2012 (dry season) and January/2013 (rainy season) at two points in the Crumaú river (upstream and downstream zone) and one in the Maratuãriver (downstream zone). The water subsamples were obtained for E. coli and nutrient analyses while the velocity of water flow, water level, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were measured in situ. The E. coli concentrations were under the detection limit in the Maratuãdownstream during the dry season reaching a maximum value (1.47 × 104 CFU/100mL) in the Crumaú upstream during the rainy season. E. coli presented strong positive correlation with nutrients (ammoniacal-N and phosphate), evidencing the sewage source in the Crumaú upstream shown by this association. In both periods, the low oxygen saturation (100 μmol·L-1) indicated considerable predominance of heterotrophic metabolism in the Crumaú upstream. The low dissolved oxygen values in Crumaú River are corroborated to show a low self-depuration capacity in the rainy period due to maintenance of high nutrient and E. coli at two points in the Crumaú river (upstream and downstream zone) and one in the Maratuãriver (downstream zone). Besides, these results evidenced that the tendency of the metabolism changed from autotrophic to heterotrophic under high river flow events at this studied estuarine sector located at Santos estuarine complex.

This study investigated the dispersal pattern of suspended sediment in the areas near the Stenhouse and Ajax glaciers, Visca Anchorage, Martel Inlet, King George Island, Antarctica. This study was conducted using visible band processing of Quickbird high-resolution spatial images obtained in October 2006. The methodology was also based on the collection and interpretation of data obtained from water samples collected in Admiralty Bay in december 2004. The digital processing of satellite images was performed using a classification method based on the reflectance characteristics of water. The classified images improved visual identification of the dispersion pattern of suspended sediments in the study area. These data were related to the interpretation of analyses conducted on suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the water. The sediment dispersal pattern observed may be associated with glacial erosion processes, their input of meltwater from the front of the glaciers into the study area, detritus flow processes and glaciomarine circulation in the region.

Background Concentration of Copper and Cadmium in Water from a High Industrialized and Urban Coastal System (Baixada santista, Brazil)—Contribution to a Monitoring Program

The Baixada santista coastal region is well known in the context of the high atmospheric, soil and aquatic pollution levels derived from port, industrial, domestic and urban activities existent there, mainly in function of the Cubatão industrial pole and port of Santos. The contamination by trace metals in this region is rarely measured in water column when compared with metal determinations in sediment studies. This study aims to evidence the levels of dissolved copper and total cadmium concentrations in estuarine and seawater waters using electrochemical analysis as a chronopotentiometric stripping polarography, which could improve the environmental monitoring program. The study was performed in the Bay of Santos reaching two estuarine channels (Santos and São Vicente Channels) in two tide periods in summer 2001. This region is influenced by terrestrial and anthropogenic inputs of trace metals to seawater. The results showed that dissolved copper and total cadmium in water presented the maxima concentrations of 45.4 nM and 2.6 nM respectively. They not reached the limits proposed by Brazilian Environmental Law (CONAMA), that indicate, as reference, a maximum of 123 nM and 350 nM for dissolved copper and total cadmium, respectively and, considering seawater coastal system (salinity > 30, class 2) and also brackish water (class 2). Although the values were under the maximum recommended for each metal, the concentrations were not negligible in relation to the other polluted areas in the world. The values distribution along the system showed a progressive increase in direction to the inner part of the system that naturally compromises the local biota whose is more exposed to the bioaccumulation processes, and this data corresponds to an important reference preterit value to the monitoring program. Sedimentary and Geochemical Aspects of a Refinery Impacted Coastal Area: A Case Study of the Todos os Santos Bay (Bahia, Brazil)

The present study was performed in the northeast portion of the Todosos Santos Bay, Bahia State, Brazil, an area under influence of the Landulpho Alves-Mataripe (RLAM) refinery effluents. The aim of this work is to evaluate the modern sedimentary processes based on grain-size analysis, calcium carbonate and sedimentary organic matter concentration and behavior considering the possible effects of the petroleum industry’s refining on these sediments. The concentrations and variations of the three main constituents of organic matter (total organic C, total N and organic P), and the resulting elemental ratios (C/N, C/P and N/P), were studied on a seasonal spatial and temporal scale (winter 2004 and summer 2005), therefore subsidizing the environmental analysis, especially in regards to the benthic ecosystem. Fifty samples from twenty-five sampling stations were collected with a grab sampler. Well sorted sandy sediments are observed in coastal sampling stations and in the Caboto channel. The recent deposition of fine sediments was observed especially in the west and central portions of study area. However, these spots contain the highest percentages of organic material, which do not present significant seasonal and spatial variations, revealed by the values of total organic C which reach values of up to 3.1%, total N (0.01% to 0.15%) and the organic P contents that reach a maximum of 15.9 μmol·g-1. In general, the elemental ratios indicated continental organic matter inputs, probably derived from human activities.
