The ripening of climacteric fruits,such as apple,is represented by a series of genetically programmed events orchestrated by the action of several *** this study,we investigated the existence of a hormonal crosstalk between ethylene and auxin during the post-harvest ripening of three internationally known apple cultivars:‘Golden Delicious',‘Granny Smith'and‘Fuji'.The normal climacteric ripening was impaired by the exogenous application of 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP)that affected the production of ethylene and the physiological behaviour of specific ethylene-related quality traits,such as fruit texture and the production of volatile organic *** application of 1-MCP induced,moreover,a de-novo accumulation of *** RNA-Seq wide-transcriptome analysis evidenced as the competition at the level of the ethylene receptors induced a cultivar-dependent transcriptional *** DEGs annotation carried out through the KEGG database identified as most genes were assigned to the plant hormone signaling transduction category,and specifically related to auxin and *** interplay between these two hormones was further assessed through a candidate gene analysis that highlighted a specific activation of GH3 and ILL genes,encoding key steps in the process of the auxin homeostasis *** results showed that a compromised ethylene metabolism at the onset of the climacteric ripening in apple can stimulate,in a cultivar-dependent fashion,an initial de-novo synthesis and de-conjugation of auxin as a tentative to restore a normal ripening progression.

We analyze in detail the quantum phase transitions that arise in models based on the u(2) algebraicdescription for bosonic systems with two types of scalar *** we discuss the quantum phase transition thatoccurs in hamiltonians that admix the two dynamical symmetry chains u(2)  u(1) and u(2)  so(2) by diagonalizingthe problem exactly in the u(1) *** we apply the coherent state formalism to determine the energy *** we show that a quantum phase transition of a different nature, but displaying similar characteristics, may arisealso within a single chain just by including higher order terms in the hamiltonian.

Reduced Basis Approaches in Time-Dependent Non-Coercive Settings for Modelling the Movement of Nuclear Reactor Control Rods

In this work,two approaches,based on the certified Reduced Basis method,have been developed for simulating the movement of nuclear reactor control rods,in time-dependent non-coercive settings featuring a 3D geometrical *** particular,in a first approach,a piece-wise affine transformation based on subdomains division has been implemented for modelling the movement of one control *** the second approach,a“staircase”strategy has been adopted for simulating themovement of all the three rods featured by the nuclear reactor chosen as case *** neutron kinetics has been modelled according to the so-called multi-group neutron diffusion,which,in the present case,is a set of ten coupled parametrized parabolic equations(two energy groups for the neutron flux,and eight for the precursors).Both the reduced order models,developed according to the two approaches,provided a very good accuracy comparedwith high-fidelity results,assumed as“truth”*** the same time,the computational speed-up in the Online phase,with respect to the fine“truth”finite element discretization,achievable by both the proposed approaches is at least of three orders of magnitude,allowing a real-time simulation of the rod movement and control.

Thermal ablation in colorectal liver metastases: Lack of evidence or lack of capability to prove the evidence?

Many studies suggest that combined multimodality treatments including ablative therapies may achieve better outcomes than systemic chemotherapy alone in patients with colorectal liver metastases. Nevertheless, ablative therapies are not yet considered as effective options because their efficacy has never been proved by randomized controlled trials (RCT). However, there are in literature no trials that failed in demonstrating the effectiveness of ablative treatments: what are lacking, are the trials. All the attempts to organize phase III studies on this topic failed as a result of non accrual. Just one prospective RCT comparing radiofrequency ablation combined with systemic chemotherapy vs chemotherapy alone has been published. It was designed as a phase III study, but it was closed early because of slow accrual, and was downscaled to phase II study, with the consequent limits in drawing definite conclusions on the benefit of combined treatment. However, the combination treatment met the primary end point of the study and obtained a significantly higher 3-year progression-free survival than systemic chemotherapy alone. It is very unlikely that ultimate efficacy of ablation treatments will ever be tested again, and the best available evidence points toward a benefit for the combination strategy using ablative treatments and chemotherapy.

Liver-directed therapies for liver metastases from neuroendocrine neoplasms:Can laser ablation play any role?

Aggressive cytoreduction can prolong survival in patients with unresectable liver metastases(LM)from neuroendocrine neoplasms(NEN),and minimally invasive,liver-directed therapies are gaining increasing ***-based treatments are used in disseminated disease,whereas ablation techniques are usually indicated when the number of LM is *** radiofrequency ablation(RFA)is by far the most used ablative technique,the goal of this opinion review is to explore the potential role of laser ablation(LA)in the treatment of LM from *** uses thinner needles than RFA,and this is an advantage when the tumors are in at-risk ***,the multi-fiber technique enables the use of one to four laser fibers at once,and each fiber provides an almost spherical thermal lesion of 12-15 mm in *** a characteristic enables to tailor the size of each thermal lesion to the size of each tumor,sparing the liver parenchyma more than any other liver-directed therapy,and allowing for repeated treatments with low risk of liver failure.A recent retrospective study reporting the largest series of LM treated with LA documents both safety and effectiveness of LA,that can play a useful role in the multimodality approach to LM from NEN.

Vegetation-based bioindication of humus forms in coniferous mountain forests

Humus forms, especially the occurrence and the thickness of the horizon of humified residues （OH）, provide valuable information on site conditions. In mountain forest soils, humus forms show a high spatial variability and data on their spatial patterns is often scarce. Our aim was to test the applicability of various vegetation features as proxy for OH thickness. Subalpine coniferous forests dominated by Picea abies （L.） H. Karst. and Larix decidua Mill. were studied in the Province of Trento, Italian Alps, between ca. 900 and 22o0 m a.s.1. Braun-Blanquet vegetation relevds and OH thickness were recorded at 152 plots. The vegetation parameters, tested for their suitability as indicators of OH thickness, encompassed mean Landolt indicator values of the herb layer （both unweighted and cover-weighted means） as well as parameters of vegetation structure （cover values of plant species groups） calculated from the releves. To our knowledge, the predictive power of Landolt indicator values （LIVs） for humus forms had not been tested before. Correlations between OHthickness and mean LIVs were strongest for the soil reaction value, but indicator values for humus, nutrients, temperature and light were also significantly correlated with OH thickness. Generally, weighting with species cover reduced the indicator quality of mean LIVs for OH thickness. The strongest relationships between OH thickness and vegetation structure existed in the following indicators： the cover of forbs （excluding graminoids and ferns） and the cover of Erieaeeae in the herb layer. Regression models predicting OH thickness based on vegetation structure had almost as much predictive power as models based on LIVs. We conclude that LIVs analysis can produce fairly reliable information regarding the thickness of the OH horizon and, thus, the humus form. If no releve data are readily available, a field estimation of the cover values of certain easily distinguishable herb layer species groups is much faster than

Water oxidation electrocatalysis with iron oxide nanoparticles prepared via laser ablation

Iron oxide nanoparticles（FeOx NPs, 5–30 nm size） prepared via laser ablation in liquid were supported onto Indium Tin Oxide conductive glass slides by magnetophoretic deposition（MD） technique. The resulting Fe O x@ITO electrodes are characterized by a low amount of iron coverage of 16–50 nmol/cm^2,and show electrocatalytic activity towards water oxidation in neutral phosphate buffer pH 7 with 0.58 V overpotential and quantitative Faradaic efficiency towards oxygen production. XPS analysis on the oxygen region of the FeOx films reveals a substantial hydration of the surface after catalysis, recognized as a crucial step to access reactivity.

Insight of surface treatments for CMOS compatibility of InAs nanowi

A CMOS compatible process is prese nted in order to grow self-catalyzed InAs nano wires on silic on by molecular beam epitaxy. The crucial step of this process is a new in-situ surface preparation under hydrogen (gas or plasma) during the substrate degassing combined with an in-situ arsenic ann eali ng prior to growth. Morphological and structural characterizati ons of the InAs nano wires are prese nted and growth mecha nisms are discussed in detail. The major in flue nee of surface termi nation is exposed both experime ntally and theoretically using statistics on ensemble of nanowires and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The differences observed between Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) growth of I nAs nano wires can be explai ned by these differe nt surfaces termi nations. The transition between a vapor solid (VS) and a vapor liquid solid (VLS) growth mechanism is presented. Optimized growth conditions lead to very high aspect ratio nano wires (up to 50 nm in diameter and 3 micron in len gth) without passi ng the 410℃ thermal limit, which makes the whole process CMOS compatible. Overall, our results suggest a new method for surface preparation and a possible tuning of the growth mechanism using different surface termi nations.
