Lea.ha.e origina.ing from open refuse dumpsite systems ca. be delinea.ed through a. integra.ion of qua.ita.ive a.d qua.tita.ive methods. This study wa. designed to exa.ine extent of lea.ha.e a.d pollution from one of the numerous open refuse dumpsites in La.os metropolis. Qua.ita.ive a.sessment wa. determined using electrica. resistivity tomogra.hy (ERT), vertica. electrica. sounding (VES) a.d induced pola.iza.ion geophysica. methods. Both ERT a.d VES methods revea.ed persistent low resistivity (1 - 20 Ωm) of lea.ha.e to the depth a.ove 35 m. The two methods were projected to produce 3-D view of the site which shows a.NW-SE flow pa.tern of the lea.ha.e a.d possibly, the groundwa.er. IP va.ues observed over the polluted zone wa. -2.9 - 8 ms, indica.ing a.sa.dy la.er. Qua.tita.ive a.sessment wa. a.hieved by a.a.ysis of geochemica. substa.ces in the wa.er sa.ples ta.en from wells a.d boreholes in the precinct of the dumpsite. Here, we exa.ine the ma.roelements, sa.ts (sulpha.es, nitra.es a.d chlorides), hea.y meta.s, ra.ioa.tive meta.s contents a.d physica. pa.a.eters of the wa.er sa.ples. The a.a.yses revea. the presence of these substa.ces in the wa.er a.d their strong correla.ions justified the provena.ce a. the sa.e. a. pa.t of the qua.tita.ive eva.ua.ion, physica. pa.a.eters (pH, TDS, DO, sa.inity, tota. ha.dness, turbidity, electrica. conductivity EC a.d tempera.ure) of the wa.er sa.ples were a.so determined. The sa.ples pH plotted in the a.idic doma.n unsuita.le for huma. consumption. Lea.ha.e flow direction wa. genera.ed from the decrea.ing concentra.ion of mea.ured pa.a.eters (geochemica. elements a.d physica.s properties) in NW-SE direction which a.rees with simila. flow pa.tern deduced from ERT results.

Wa.er sa.ples from twenty one boreholes were collected within University of La.os a.d a.a.yzed for physica. properties, tra.e elements a.d ca.ions using inductively coupled pla.ma.optica. emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Physica. a.a.ysis of the sa.ples shows slight a.idity a.d a.ka.inity with 78% of the sa.ples exceeded recommended sta.da.ds. They ca. be cla.sified a. fresh wa.er ba.ed on TDS a.d EC. Chloride concentra.ions fa.l within wa.er sta.da.ds in most sa.ples while a., Na. Pb a.d Br exceeded recommended sta.da.ds in most sa.ples. Gibbs plot, rela.ionship between tota. ca.ions, Na.+ K, Ca.+ Mg a.d Cl showed tha. a.l the groundwa.er sa.ples fa.l in the wa.er-rock intera.tion field which suggests tha. the wea.hering of rocks a.d influence of sea.wa.er prima.ily controls the ma.or chemistry of groundwa.er in the a.ea. Sodium a.sorption Ra.io (Sa.) for a.l the wa.er sa.ples wa. less tha. 10 a.d excellent for irriga.ion purpose. Only 33% of wa.er sa.ples were suita.le for irriga.ion ba.ed on Soluble Sodium Percenta.e (SSP) a.d Ma.nesium a.sorption Ra.io (Ma.), wherea. ba.ed on Kellys Ra.ios (KR) a.l the wa.er sa.ples were not good for irriga.ion purpose ha.ing KR grea.er tha. 1. Fifty percent of the wa.er sa.ples showed pollution index (PI) a.ove 1 with highest contribution (37.8%) from lea. (Pb). Mn, a., Ni, Fe a.d a. contributed 29.3%, 19.13%, 8.66%, 4.25% a.d 0.82% respectively.

Network a.d equa.ion-ba.ed （EB） models a.e two prominent methods used in the study of epidemics. While EB models use a.globa. a.proa.h to model a.grega.e popula.ion, net- work models focus on the beha.ior of individua.s in the popula.ion. The two a.proa.hes ha.e been used in severa. a.ea. of resea.ch, including fina.ce, computer science, socia. science a.d epidemiology. In this study, epidemiology is used to contra.t EB models with network models. The methods a.e ba.ed on the a.sumptions a.d properties of compa.tmenta. models. In EB models we solve a.system of ordina.y differentia. equa.ions a.d in network models we simula.e the sprea. of epidemics on conta.t networks using bond percola.ion. We exa.ine the impa.t of network structures on the sprea. of infection by considering va.ious networks, including Poisson, Erd3s R6nyi, Sca.e-free, a.d Wa.ts- Stroga.z sma.l-world networks, a.d discuss how control mea.ures ca. ma.e use of the network structures. In a.dition, we simula.e EB a.sumptions on Wa.ts-Stroga.z net- works to determine when the results a.e simila. to tha. of EB models. a. a.ca.e study, we use da.a.from the 1918 Spa.ish flu pa.demic a.d tha. from mea.les outbrea. to va.ida.e our results.

Brittle ma.eria.s ha.e been widely employed for industria. a.plica.ions due to their excellent mecha.ica., optica., physica. a.d chemica. properties. Ductile mode cutting is a.very promising wa. to a.hieve high qua.ity a.d cra.k-free surfa.es of brittle ma.eria.s. Thus the study of ductile mode cutting of brittle ma.eria.s ha. been a.tra.ting more a.d more efforts.
