Acute bacterial infection negatively impacts cancer specific survival of colorectal cancer patients

AIM:To assess the impact of bacterial infections on cancer-specific survival in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS:This was a retrospective cohort study of colorectal cancer patients treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center between January 2006 and April 2010. The presence of bacterial infection during cancer treatment,or up to one year after,was confirmed by laboratory tests or by the physician. Infections of the urinary,respiratory or digestive tracts,bloodstream,skin or surgical site were defined by testing within a single laboratory. Criteria for exclusion from the study were:chronically immunosuppressed patients;transplant patients(due to chronic immunosuppression);human immunodeficiency virus carriers;chronic use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs;patients with autoimmune disease or primary immunodeficiency;known viral or parasitic infections. Patients with infections that did not require hospitalization were not included in the study because of the difficulty of collecting and tracking data related to infectious processes. In addition,patients hospitalized for pulmonary thromboembolism,stroke,acute myocardial infarction,uncontrolled diabetes,malignant hypercalcemia or other serious non-infectious complications not directly related to infection were also excluded. Survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method,and logrank tests(univariate analysis) and a Cox test assuming a proportional hazards model(multivariate analysis) were performed to examine associations between clinical history and characteristics of infection with cancer-specific survival. RESULTS:One-hundred and six patients with colorectal cancer were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of bacterial infection. Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste for Power Generation in Brazil, a Review of Available Technologies and Their Environmental Benefits

This article reviews the literature on thermochemical processing of municipal solid waste as the final disposal in Brazil, explores recent publications in the field of solid waste generated, its origin, characteristics and removal mechanisms currently employed, in the same way, available technologies for the thermochemical treatment of MSW with an emphasis on gasification and clean technology are evaluated, highlighting the current technical and reported in the literature in order to identify indicators of efficiency and flexibility of the technology. From the review it is concluded that gasification is a technically feasible option for the thermochemical conversion of municipal solid waste and subsequent power generation, besides being a technology that meets the applicable emission limits. Some of the main advantages of gasification of municipal solid waste are：（a） the sharp reduction in the waste mass （about 70-80%） and volume （approximately 80-90%）; （b） the drastic reduction in land use, 1：3000; （c） destruction of organic pollutants and other halogenated hydrocarbons; （d） concentration and immobilisation of inorganic contaminants so that they can be used effectively and safely removed; （e） use recyclables, such as ferrous metals, ferrous ash and slag materials; （f） reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by anaerobic decomposition of organic waste and （g） power generation.

A New Biomaterial for Urinary Catheters

Several studies argue that an ideal biomaterial for urinary catheters is utopian. Based in literature review it seems to be true. However, research advances: the biomaterial itself, new designs, new coatings, associated drugs, etc. Once implanted and interacting with urine, two old problems persist: encrustation and bacterial colonization. In this context, an extracellular product from bacterial synthesis on sugarcane molasses biomaterial has been studied in several experimental and clinical studies. Based on its high biocompatibility, the aim of this study is to evaluate its performance in an in vivo model as an endourologic prosthesis implanted in the bladder of Wistar rats. We evaluate physical, chemical and biological phenomena in comparison to an already established biomaterial, polyurethane. Even though it is not a finished product, the sugarcane biopolymer presented similar performance compared to polyurethane in several analyzed parameters and has an important characteristic: low cost.

Chemical Quality Indexes of Mullet (<i>Mugil platanus</i>) Stored on Ice

The present study was conducted aiming at establishing chemical quality parameters to assess ice stored mullet (0℃ ± 1℃) through the evaluation of nucleotide (adenosine monophosphate [AMP], inosine [HxR] and hypoxanthine [Hx]) degradation, biogenic amine (histamine [HI], putrescine [PU], cadaverine [CA] and tyramine [TI]) quantification and mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria count monitoring. The microbial load of 7 log CFU·g–1 established as maximum acceptable limit was attained after the 20th day of ice storage. IMP concentration declined during the storage period to levels below the detection limit. HxR content increased only up to time T3 and then declined. Hx level increased during all the storage period. CA and HI content increase was not observed, on the other hand, PU and TI contents significantly increased (p ded that IMP and Hx concentrations can be adequate parameters to assess mullet quality under the study conditions. HxR proved to be adequate to evaluate the freshness of mullet in the first days of storage while the amines, PU and TI, can be used to assess loss of quality. Mullet obtained in conditions similar to those of the present study and maintained at 0℃ ± 1℃ can be consumed up to the 20th storage day.

Acute Appendicitis after Liver Transplant: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Acute appendicitis is rare in the postoperative period of liver transplantation;only 23 cases were described in the literature to date, including late and immediate postoperative. Our case reports a patient who was presented with acute appendicitis in the immediate post-transplant and died in the subsequent postoperative period. The article reviews the available literature and all cases known until now, commenting on incidence, casual factors, symptoms, diagnostic and management.

Use of Caffeine for the Evaluation of the Anthropic Influence over the Upper and Middle Iguaçu River Basins

Many parameters are usually used as gauges to describe water quality worldwide, such as the concentrations of phosphorus, forms of nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), among others. Though legislative limits for the concentrations of these substances are in place, such is not the case for caffeine. Caffeine is a pharmacologically active alkaloid, from the xanthine group, which can be used as a chemical tracer for anthropic influence over water resources. The objective of this study was to analyze the pollution indicators over the Igua?u River, one of the main rivers in Southern Brazil, through the examination of nutrients, DO and their correlations to caffeine. The water samples were collected from 10 sampling sites along the river course, unevenly spaced to better represent the different environmental scenarios present in its basin, extracted from 2014 to 2017. Caffeine was detected and quantified through high-efficiency liquid state chromatography. Results show that both nutrient and caffeine concentrations increased in intensely urbanized areas, specially from IG2 to IG5 sampling sites. Downstream from IG6 the contaminant concentrations decreased mainly due to higher river flows and lower population density. Caffeine was detected in 82% of the samples, indicating that most of the sampling sites were under anthropic influence.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility,Biofilm Production and Adhesion to HEp-2 Cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains Isolated from Clinical Samples

A hundred Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains from several clinical specimens from five hospitals in Sao Luís-MA were evaluated for biofilm production, prevalence of the gene algD, adhesion to HEp-2 cells and antimicrobial susceptibility. The most affected clinical specimens and hospital sectors were also evaluated. Most isolates were obtained from the tracheal aspirate (21.0%) and the most affected hospital sector was the ICU (43.0%). The antibiotics with the highest sensitivity rate were amikacin, piperacillin/tazobactam, fluoroquinolones, gentamicin and meropenem and the ones with the highest resistance rate were aztreonam, ceftazidime and cefepime. All samples were sensitive to polymyxin B. In relation to the expression of the gene for ESBL, 50.0% (17/34) of the multiresistant strains showed the enzyme TEM. Most strains showed high hydrophobicity and 96% of the isolates produced biofilm on a polystyrene microplate, 52% were capsule producers, 19% showed mannose-sensitive fimbriae and 39% expressed the gene algD. We observed adhesion to HEp-2 cells and to the coverslip. These factors may be reported in the pathogenesis of this bacterium, what represents a potential risk for colonization of medical devices which favor the establishment of chronic nosocomial infections.

This study aims to assess the implementation of the Health, Aging and Quality of Life. The specific objectives were executed by conducting activities with the elderly through generative themes with an emphasis on health, aging and quality of life;evaluation of the experience of older people in Unity Family Health with Popular Education;analyzing the evolution of indicators of health and quality of life of elderly patients after two years and ascertaining the effectiveness of Popular Education in the elderly group in the Family Health Unit. This is an exploratory study approved by the Ethics and Research Committee UFPB/CCS, number 0598/08 held on Primary Health Care. The project consists of two lines of integrated activities: Group Active Ageing (GEA), which brings together seniors for addressing issues related to healthy aging and the Multidimensional Health Assessment and Quality of Life through the WHOQOL-BREF. The activities were built in fortnightly meetings from the dialogue where experiences are shared and collective needs. Thus, relevant topics were suggested for the group: guidelines on physical activity, nutrition, chronic disease prevention, self-esteem, among others, and group dynamics as body stretching, stretching exercises, respiratory, metabolic and relaxation. The observed results are the very satisfactions group, reported through testimonies and translated by the enthusiasm and diligence in participation. This project promoted a better bio-psycho-social development of the elderly, reinforcing its identity by promoting and facilitating the expression of their potential positive and arousing them to a better future life prospects and community socialization feelings.

Rheology of Cement Mortars with Crushed Fine Aggregates of Different Lithological Types

Crushed fine aggregates are widely used for full or partial replacement of natural sands in concretes. The crushed sands present different characteristics from the natural sand, especially if taking into account the content of microfine particle, the distribution of particle sizes, the shape features, besides the different lithological origin. From the rheological point of view, the crushed sands frequently provide mixtures with high yield stress, high viscosity, high cohesion and internal friction, which hinders its use in concrete. This study is focused on the evaluation of the rheological behavior of concrete mortar phase when using different lithological types of crushed sand in total replacement of natural sand. The lithological types surveyed were granite, calcitic limestone, dolomite limestone and mica schist. Each of these sand types was studied in two ways： in natura and with adjusted grading curve. The results show the best performance of calcitic limestone providing lower viscosities and lower yield stress in mortars.

Reviewing Self-Injuries Behavior in Macaques: The Role of Early Experience and Genetics in an Integrated Non-Human Model

Genetic differences in non-human primates and the context where they were reared are important in the determination of their behaviors. Some studies suggest that Self-Injurious Behavior results from stress or anxiety, but some macaques appear to be more vulnerable to acquiring Self-Injurious Behavior. Vulnerability and risk for socially reared macaques of developing Self-Injurious Behavior increased when they experienced early adverse events and suffered from consequent stress. Stressful events can cause alterations in the neuroendocrine and neuropeptide systems associated with the regulation of stress and anxiety. Dysregulation in these systems contributes to the occurrence of anxious episodes that lead to self-harm. This could be used by those animals to counteract the effects of anxiety, causing euphoria by releasing endogenous opioids. In developing an integrative approach of Self-Injurious Behavior, we propose the diathesis-stress model to illustrate how the environment and genetics are influenced as well, taking rhesus monkeys as an example. Rhesus macaques and humans have essentially the same gene 5-HTT as well as functional polymorphism. The allelic variation in the region promoting the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT) was associated with significant differences in the number of depressive symptoms and contributions to social reward and punishment. Growing up without the mother and the rearing environment are important risk factors for developing abnormal behaviors.
