Birch Sap (Betula alba) and Chaga Mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) Extracts Show Anti-Oxidant, Anti-Inflammatory and DNA Protection/Repair Activity In Vitro

OBJECTIVE: The skin interacts strictly with the surrounding environment. Despite an efficient system of protection, its integrity is continuously assaulted by a massive group of external stresses. UV irradiations represent one of the most harmful factors for the cutaneous tissue. Both UV-A and UV-B can induce deep modifications of the different layers of the skin, including a weakening of its barrier function properties, DNA damages and degradation of the extracellular matrix. The aim of this project was to assess the UV protection activity of two natural compounds, the birch sap from Betula alba and organic extract from Inonotus obliquus (chaga mushroom) used separately or in a complex. METHODS: The anti-oxidant (ROS and MDA quantification, catalase and SOD activity measurement), anti-inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α and INF-γ dosages) and the DNA protection/repair activities (DNA lesion site analysis) of birch sap and chaga mushroom extracts tested separately or in a complex containing organic birch sap 5% and Inonotus obliquus extracts 2% were evaluated in vitro after exposure of cultured keratinocytes and fibroblasts or reconstructed epidermis to UV-A/UV-B irradiations. RESULTS: We observed that birch sap from Betula alba and extracts from Inonotus obliquus prevent the formation of ROS and decrease the oxidative stress induced under UV irradiations, suggesting a strong anti-oxidant activity. In addition, the tested products showed an immunomodulatory effect by reducing the quantity of pro-inflammatory cytokines upon UV irradiations. UV-induced DNA damages of keratinocytes were also reduced by birch sap and chaga mushroom extracts. CONCLUSION: Here, for the first time, we have shown the photo-protection activity of extracts obtained from Betula alba and Inonotus obliquus mushroom on skin cells exposed to UV-A and UV-B irradiations. Seaberry (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) and Water Lily (Nymphaeaceae) Extracts Protect Human Skin against Blue Light, Environmental Pollutants and UV-A Irradiations in an Ex VivoModel System

Background: The skin is the outer shell of the mammalian body and it is continuously exposed to a large spectrum of external stimuli including sun irradiation and atmospheric pollutants. These factors present deleterious effects on the cutaneous compartment by altering the skin barrier functions and accelerating the aging of the skin. Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the activity of Seaberry and Water Lily extracts, here called Dermina complex, against different external stresses. Methods: Human skin explants were exposed to different stimuli including delipidation by organic solvents, blue light, atmospheric pollutants and UV-A. The activity of the Seaberry and Water Lily extracts was assessed by immunohistochemistry and by biochemical assays. Results: We showed that Dermina complex prevents the delipidation-induced filaggrin decrease, suggesting that these plant extracts exhibited barrier function protecting properties. Also, we observed that Dermina complex showed an antioxidant and DNA protection activity by decreasing the activated form of Nrf2, the oxidized proteins and the formation of γ-H2AX induced upon stress conditions. The Dermina complex also decreased the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1 alpha released in the culture medium following atmospheric pollutants and UV-A exposure confirming its anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, Dermina complex reduced the blue light-induced overexpression of opsin 3, indicating that its skin protection activities may be due, in part, to filter property against environmental stresses. Conclusions: Dermina complex shows a protective activity of the skin against different environmental stresses and these extracts may be able to slow down the aging process of the cutaneous compartment.

In insects,larval and adult defenses against predators have been well ***,pupal(also known as resting stage)defenses have been overlooked and not examined *** some pupa possess antipredator strategies such as hairs,spines,cryptic coloration,and exudation of chemicals,few studies have tested these responses and the factors affecting ***,we investigated the behavioral responses in tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta that pupates in soil by introducing an external stimulus using vibrations from an electric toothbrush to mimic *** observed that *** made violent wriggling(twitching),followed by pulsating movements in response to the vibrational *** examination showed that these twitches and pulsating events occurred more frequently and for longer periods of time in male pupa and were dependent on the magnitude of the stress(high and low frequency).However,when we estimated the angular force exerted by pupa using radian and angular momentum of twitches,it was found to be independent of pupal sex.A follow-up experiment on possible cascading effects of stress exposure on eclosion success revealed that low-and high-frequency stress exposure didn’t cause any of the common defects in eclosed *** study clearly demonstrates that the so-called defenseless pupal stage uses a wide range of measurable defense behaviors that can actively defend against predators and should be examined further-linking observed behavior with underlying mechanisms.

The Coordinate-Free Prediction in Finite Populations with Correlated Observations

In this paper, we got the best linear unbiased predictor of any linear function of the elements of a finite population under coordinate-free models. The optimal predictor of these quantities was obtained in an earlier work considering models with a known diagonal covariance matrix. We extended this result assuming any known covariance matrix. It is shown that in the particular case of the coordinatized models, this general predictor coincides with the optimal predictor of the total population under a regression super population model with correlated observations.

本文的主要目标是在各种未说明的空间约束下,分析不同强化学习策略对机器人器械护士(RSN)应用的影响,尤其是对其“到达者”任务的影响。这一任务是机器人操纵任务中最重要的方向之一。本文提供了我们的对于不同空间约束下的“到达者”任务的实验结果和评估。我们使用了强化学习算法DDPG-HER和SAC-HER对各种未说明的空间约束进行测试。本算法基于7 DOF机械臂进行实验评估。实验结果采用奖励价值和成功率作为衡量指标,其中,最新的深度强化学习算法的仿真结果最为稳定。实验基于Mu Jo Co虚拟环境中,训练机械臂到达目的地。“到达者”任务的重要方面以及医疗机器人中强化学习应用程序的开发是该研究目标的主要动机之一。

A Comparison of the Estimators of the Scale Parameter of the Errors Distribution in the L₁ Regression

The L1 regression is a robust alternative to the least squares regression whenever there are outliers in the values of the response variable, or the errors follow a long-tailed distribution. To calculate the standard errors of the L1 estimators, construct confidence intervals and test hypotheses about the parameters of the model, or to calculate a robust coefficient of determination, it is necessary to have an estimate of a scale parameterτ. This parameter is such that τ2/n is the variance of the median of a sample of size n from the errors distribution. [1] proposed the use of , a consistent, and so, an asymptotically unbiased estimator of τ. However, this estimator is not stable in small samples, in the sense that it can increase with the introduction of new independent variables in the model. When the errors follow the Laplace distribution, the maximum likelihood estimator of τ, say , is the mean absolute error, that is, the mean of the absolute residuals. This estimator always decreases when new independent variables are added to the model. Our objective is to develop asymptotic properties of under several errors distributions analytically. We also performed a simulation study to compare the distributions of both estimators in small samples with the objective to establish conditions in which is a good alternative to for such situations.

This study investigates the ethical orientation of students of business schools in the Middle East, with special reference to the state of Kuwait. It examines whether differences in students’ demographics and professional characteristics, including gender, academic level, participation in business ethics training programs, and working status, have any influence on their attitudes towards business ethics. Further, this study compares and contrasts the ethical orientations of business students in Kuwait and their counterparts in other countries. The pre-validated scale of Attitudes towards Business Ethics Questionnaire （ATBEQ） is adopted as a measurement instrument. For comparison purposes, the T-test for equality of means is used to test for significant differences between our results and results of research in other countries, while the ANOVA F-test is conducted to test for significant differences among countries, on a group basis. The overall mean for business ethics is 2.963. This is slightly lower than the mid-point （3）. Students responded differently by providing higher/lower levels of agreements toward the reported ethics statements. Results support the view that there is a significant difference between male and female respondents in terms of their attitudes towards ethics. The results indicate that higher academic levels （i.e., senior and graduate students） have more positive views towards business ethics compared to lower academic levels （i.e., freshman, sophomore and junior students）. Participation in business ethics training programs and working status do not have an influence on the ethical orientation of the respondents. A comparison of the overall mean of the present study with means of previous studies shows that the ethical orientations of business students in Kuwait cluster with those of the Iranian and Malaysian students. On the contrary, significant differences seem to exist between the Kuwaiti respondents and those in the USA, Australia and Israel
