Bio-based and nature inspired solutions: A step toward carbon-neutral economy

Bio-based and nature-inspired solutions have been investigated recently to develop sustainable,resilient,and durable construction including but not limited to roadway *** paper reviews state-of-the-art studies on self-healing,self-cleaning and self-rejuvenating asphalt,and concrete *** review draws three conclusions.(1)Self-healing construction materials have the potential to significantly extend the service life of construction *** and industrial wastes such as food waste,biomass,metals have been used to create self-healing construction materials that are more environmentally friendly.(2)Self-cleaning construction materials not only remove pollution by repelling water on their superhydrophobic surface,but also cut building and infrastructure maintenance costs,while improving cities'air quality by degrading pollutants such as *** engineers have exploited self-cleaning characteristic to facilitate the de-icing of pavements and lengthening the service life of pavements.(3)Self-rejuvenating materials including bio-oils can revitalize materials and delay aging;bio-oils can also be used to make bio-binders,thereby reducing the need for petroleumbased *** optimum concentration of bio-oil for asphalt modification depends on the chemical structure of ***,regardless of dosage,self-rejuvenating binders improve asphalt workability and performance at low temperatures and increase the resistance of the asphalt mix to fatigue and *** review also identified critical research gaps,including(1)the lack of a reliable,unified,and standard method to accurately measure construction materials’self-healing,self-cleaning and self-rejuvenating properties;(2)the lack of longterm field performance data to conduct comprehensive life cycle assessment and life cycle analysis;(3)the lack of accurate technoeconomic analysis to facilitate market entry of abovementioned *** these gaps and determining contrib

Sediment transport mechanisms and selective removal of soil particles under unsteady-state conditions in a sheet erosion system

Selective removal of particles and nutrients by water erosion is a key factor in soil erosion *** agricultural soils are located on gentle slopes where fertility is high;however,until now,the main attention on sediment transport mechanisms was paid to high-slope gradients,where soil erosion is intense,but soils are less *** the importance of sediment size distribution(SSD) and transport mechanisms under unsteady-state conditions,few studies have been done on this *** sediment concentrations in the early stages of the runoff indicate the need to deal with unsteady-state *** address this issue,sheet erosion experiments were done using a 0.2 m by 1 m tilting flume under controlled laboratory *** inflow rates(75,100,125,150,175,and 200 mL/s) were applied on two contrasting soils,including an adjacent agricultural soil and a not cultivated soil(namely Cropland soil and Control soil,respectively) at two low slope gradients(1.5% and 2%).No rill formation was observed during the *** sediment-laden runoff was sampled during unsteady-state flow to determine the SSDs and sediment transport mechanisms of eroded particles for unsteadystate *** results indicated different trends in the selective removal of sediment particles depending on hydraulic conditions and soil aggregate *** contribution of suspension-saltation(SS)to the total sediment load for the Cropland and Control soils varied from 22% to 68% and from 35% to 59%,respectively,while up to 78% and 65% of soil particles were transported by bed load(BL),***,SS and BL indicated a reverse trend with stream *** Cropland soil showed a single peak in the SSD at low stream powers because of the selective removal of fine particles(0.042 mm),whereas the SSD was shifted to a bimodal distribution at higher stream powers with the selective depletion of both fine(≤0.084 mm) and coarse(1.5 mm) *** Control soil experienced a

A systematic review of occupational exposure to respirable coal mine dust(RCMD)in the *** industry

Cumulative inhalation of respirable coal mine dust(RCMD)can lead to severe lung diseases,including coal worker's pneu-moconiosis(CWP),silicosis,mixed dust pneumoconiosis,dust-related diffuse fibrosis(DDF),and progressive massive fibrosis(PMF).Statistics from the number of reported cases showed a significant decrease in the progression of respiratory diseases in the ***,an unexpected increase in the number of CWP cases was reported in the late *** date,there has been no comprehensive systematic review to assess all contributing factors to the resurgence of CWP *** study aims to investigate the effects of various mining parameters on the prevalence of CWP in coal mines.A systematic review using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis(PRISMA)method was conducted to investigate the health effects of RCMD exposure and identify the factors that may contribute to the recent resurgence of CWP *** systematic review yielded a total of 401 papers,which were added to the *** total number of 148 and 208 papers were excluded from the database in the process of screening and eligibility,***,18 papers were considered for data selection and full-text *** review revealed that factors including geographic location,mine size,mining operation type,coal-seam thickness,coal rank,changes in mining practices,technology advancement,and engi-neering dust control practices are contributing to the recent resurgence of CWP among coal ***,the evidence for root causes is limited owing to the methodological constraints of the studies;therefore,further detailed studies are needed.

Effects of vegetation channel banks and gravel size on flow structure

Vegetation on river banks and bed roughness are important factors affecting flow structure, sediment transport, erosion and geomorphology in rivers. In this experimental study, the impacts of vegetation on flume walls, grain size of bed gravels and aspect ratio on characteristics of shear stress distribution, Coles' wake parameter, the kinematic energy correction factor (α) and the momentum correction factor (β) have been assessed. Reynolds stress distribution illustrates a three-layer pattern when the aspect ratio is smaller than 2. In addition, the aspect ratio and changes of vegetation affect α, β as well as the Coles' wake parameter Π.

A mathematical model for open pit mine production scheduling with Grade Engineering and stockpiling

This paper presents the development and implementation of an innovative mixed integer programming based mathematical model for an open pit mining operation with Grade Engineering *** Engineering comprises a range of coarse-separation based pre-processing techniques that separate the desirable(***-grade)and undesirable(***-grade or uneconomic)materials and ensure the delivery of only selected quantity of high quality(or high-grade)material to energy,water,and cost-intensive processing *** model maximizes the net present value under a range of operational and processing *** that the proposed model is computationally complex,the authors employ a data preprocessing procedure and then evaluate the performance of the model at several practical instances using computation time,optimality gap,and the net present value as valid *** addition,a comparison of the proposed and traditional(without Grade Engineering)models reflects that the proposed model outperforms the traditional formulation.

Physiological traits and anatomic structures of the seed for two short cotton season genotypes(Gossypium hirsutum L.) under water stress

Cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.) is utilized commercially in the production of textile, clothing, and household goods. Its growth is affected by various environmental conditions such as soil, climate, and water supply. Irrigation is one of the most important factors for crop management. This research was designed with the aim of studying the biochemical and anatomical features of two genotypes of cottonseed(Latif and Golestan) in order to determine optimum irrigation. Protein, starch, gossypol gland, total soluble protein, starch content, and the anatomical structure of the cotton seeds were investigated. The data were analyzed using the SAS Software. The results showed that when rainfed, Golestan genotype seeds had a larger number of secretory cavities, soluble protein, and starch compared to Latif seeds. There was also a noticeable difference in the size of the seeds. Cellulosic cell walls and protein particles were also observed in the seed structure under induced water stress conditions. It can therefore be concluded that in response to water shortage, there was a noticeable change in the morphometric, anatomic, and biochemical features of the cottonseeds. It can be concluded that when rainfed, the Golestan genotype of cottonseed has more compatibility than the Latif genotype. In general, the application of different levels of irrigation showed that at moderate levels of irrigation, anatomical features appeared more normal. The observations indicate that at high levels of irrigation, some cells begin to dehisce due to osmotic stress, which results in a lack of accurate formation of tissue structures. The Golestan genotype is therefore the best suited for dryland farming.

Reduction of local scour around bridge pier groups using collars

In this paper reduction of scour around group of two and three piers using circular collar has been carried out for the case of clear-water flow over uniform sediment. The efficiency of collars, with different sizes and spaces between piers is studied through experiments in group of two and three piers. The result reveals that collar has more influence in reduction of scour depth in rear piers than the first pier. Also, when the spacing between the piers increases the area without protection between the piers is washed away resulting deeper scour holes at the rear piers.

Effects of physical form of diet on nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, rumination,growth performance and protozoa population of finishing lambs

This study was conducted to compare effects of 3 physical forms of feed including mash(diet 1), pellet(diet 2) and complete feed block(CFB; diet 3) on digestion, fermentation and performance of ***-one lambs with an initial average body weight of 26 ± 2.5 kg and 6 ± 1.5 months of age were assigned through a completely randomized design to 3 treatments and 7 replicates. The experimental treatments had the same formulation. The results of present experiment showed that CFB significantly increased feed intake and nutrient digestibility(P 0.05), except acetic acid(P < 0.05). The rumen ammonia nitrogen(NH3-N), mixed rumen protozoa population(RPP), Entodiniums spp., Epidiniums spp., blood urea nitrogen(BUN) concentration, rumination time adjusted for dry matter(DM), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF) intake, and total body weight gain of lambs in CFB diet were the highest among all diets(P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio at days 31 to 45 and whole experimental period were better in CFB than in other diets(P < 0.05). Overall, according to the findings of the present study, among 3 physical forms of the diets, CFB had the best efficiency due to improvement of nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation and performance of lambs. Therefore, the CFB diet offers the best result in lambs compared with mash and pellet diets.
