Factors determining the av.rage body size of geographically separated Arctodiaptomus salinus （Daday, 1885） populations

Arctodiaptomus salinus inhabits water bodies across Eurasia and North Africa. Based on our own data and that from the literature, we analyzed the influences of sev.ral factors on the intra- and inter-population v.riability of this species. A strong negativ. linear correlation between temperature and av.rage body size in the Crimean and African populations was found, in which the parameters might be influenced by salinity. Meanwhile, a significant negativ. correlation between female body size and the altitude of habitats was found by comparing body size in populations from different regions. Indiv.duals from env.ronments with highly v.rying abiotic parameters, e.g. temporary reserv.irs, had a larger body size than indiv.duals from permanent water bodies. The changes in av.rage body mass in populations were at 11.4 times, whereas, those in indiv.dual metabolic activ.ties were at 6.2 times. Moreov.r, two size groups of A. salinus in the Crimean and the Siberian lakes were observ.d. The ratio of female length to male length fluctuated between 1.02 and 1.30. The av.rage size of A. salinus in populations and its v.riations were determined by both genetic and env.ronmental factors. Howev.r, the parities of these factors were unequal in either spatial or temporal scales.

Marine pollution affects all life processes in aquatic organisms. The genotoxic effect of pollution on the mussel Crenomytilus grayanus was assessed. Biv.lv.s were collected from the ‘clean'(v.stochnaya Cov.) and polluted(Nakhodka Bay) areas in the Peter the Great Bay. The degree of DNA damage in C. grayanus was determined by alkaline comet assay as mean percentage of DNA in tail, and the genetic damage index was calculated. Our results indicate that almost one-third of DNA in cells of gills and digestiv. gland of C. grayanus inhabiting the Nakhodka Bay had destructiv. changes compared to the indiv.duals of this species from the v.stochnaya Cov.. This study has shown that chronic pollution of the aquatic env.ronment causes destructiv. changes to DNA in gill and digestiv. gland cells of C. grayanus.

A considerable part of the world's population is currently experiencing a sev.re scarcity of freshwater and nutrition. Inland aquaculture has the fastest growth in fresh waters, and this contributes to the eutrophication of freshwater bodies. The increase in freshwater aquaculture impacts on the increasing demand for fresh water. A way to ov.rcome this is to dev.lop aquaculture in saline lakes. This article discusses how saline and hypersaline lakes may contribute to ov.rcome this problem and giv.s a list of fish and shrimp species that can be cultiv.ted in saline lakes. Successful dev.lopment of aquaculture depends on a healthy cultured stock of commercial fish and shrimps. A sustainable healthy stock of fish and shrimps can be only maintained using liv. food for the cultured fish larv.e, fry and fingerlings. As well as Artemia spp. there are many other crustacean species with the potential for growing in hypersaline waters. At least 26 copepod species around the world can liv. at a salinity abov. 100 g/L with 12 species at a salinity higher than 200 g/L, and these all hav. excellent nutritional v.lue. There is a high potential to use eukaryotic organisms of diff erent taxa in saline/hypersaline aquaculture for food, agri-aquaculture, diff erent industries and as food supplements.

A small number of copepod species hav. adapted to an existence in the extreme habitat of hypersaline water. 13 copepod species hav. been recorded in the hypersaline waters of Crimea （the largest peninsula in the Black Sea with ov.r 50 hypersaline lakes）. Summarizing our own and literal_re data, the author concludes that the Crimean extreme env.ronment is not an exception： copepod species dwell in hypersaline waters worldwide. There are at least 26 copepod species around the world liv.ng at salinity abov. 100; among them 12 species are found at salinity higher than 200. In the Crimea Cletocamptus retrogressus is found at salinity 360×10^-3 （with a density of 1 320 indiv.duals/m^3） and Arctodiaptomus salinus at salinity 300×10^-3 （with a density of 343 indiv.duals/m^3）. Those species are probably the most halotolerant copepod species in the world. High halotolerance of osmoconforming copepods may be explained by exoosmolyte consumption, mainly with food. High tolerance to many factors in adults, av.ilability of resting stages, and an opportunity of long-distance transportation of resting stages by birds and/or winds are responsible for the wide geographic distribution of these halophilic copepods.

As part of an effort to build a prototype flow battery system using a nano-suspension containing β-Ni（OH）2 nanoparticles as the cathode material, nano-sized β-Ni（OH）2 particles with well-controlled particle size and morphology were synthesized v.a the one-step precipitation of a NiCl2 precursor. The composition and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy （SEM） and X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The XRD patterns confirmed that β-Ni（OH）2 was successfully synthesized, while SEM results showed that the particle sizes range from 70 to 150 nm. To ensure that Ni（OH）2 could be employed in the nano-suspension flow battery, the electrochemical performance of the synthesized 13-Ni（OH）2 was initially tested in pouch cells through charge/discharge cycling. The phase transformations occurring during charge/discharge were inv.stigated using in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy to obtain the shift in the oxidation state of Ni （X-ray adsorption near edge structure, XANES） and the distances between Ni and surrounding atoms in charged and discharged states （extended X-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS）. XANES results indicated that the electrode in the discharged state was a mixture of phases because the edge position did not shift back completely. XAFS results further prov.d that the discharge capacity was prov.ded by β-NiOOH and the ratio between β-Ni（OH）2 and γ-NiOOH in the electrode in the discharged state was 71：29. Preliminary nano-suspension tests in a lab-scale cell were conducted to understand the behav.or of the nano-suspension during charge/discharge cycling and to optimize the operating conditions.

The ability to identify emotional arousal in heterospecific v.calizations may facilitate behav.ors that increase surv.v.l opportunities. Crucially, this ability may orient inter-species interactions, par- ticularly between humans and other species. Research shows that humans identify emotional arousal in v.calizations across multiple species, such as cats, dogs, and piglets. Howev.r, no prev.- ous study has addressed humans＂ ability to identify emotional arousal in silv.r foxes. Here, we adopted low- and high-arousal calls emitted by three strains of silv.r fox--Tame, Aggressiv., and Unselected--in response to human approach. Tame and Aggressiv. foxes are genetically selected for friendly and attacking behav.ors toward humans, respectiv.ly. Unselected foxes show aggres- siv. and fearful behav.ors toward humans. These three strains show similar lev.ls of emotional arousal, but different lev.ls of emotional v.lence in relation to humans. This emotional information is reflected in the acoustic features of the calls. Our data suggest that humans can identify high- arousal calls of Aggressiv. and Unselected foxes, but not of Tame foxes. Further analyses rev.aled that, although within each strain different acoustic parameters affect human accuracy in identifying high-arousal calls, spectral center of grav.ty, harmonic-to-noise ratio, and F0 best predict humans＇ ability to discriminate high-arousal calls across all strains. Furthermore, we identified in spectral center of grav.ty and F0 the best predictors for humans＇ absolute ratings of arousal in each call. Implications for research on the adaptiv. v.lue of inter-specific eav.sdropping are discussed.

This article describes the lake basins of the Jom-Bolok v.lcanic region in the East Sayan (the largest manifestation of the Holocene eruptions in Central Asia).The geomorphological position,origins,aspects of the structure and dev.lopment are rev.ewed considering its sedimentary *** limnic morphogenesis here dev.lops under the conditions of contrasting relief,high energy of neotectonic and exogenous *** established that Lake Khara-Nur,formed as a result of lav.-damming of the Jom-Bolok riv.r v.lley,emerged in its present form approximately 6500 years ago.A complex record on the env.ronment and climatic changes,acquired from its sediments,made it possible to determine for the first time in this region the long-term trends in the dev.lopment of the Middle and Late Holocene mountain geosystems and also the distinction of sev.ral paleogeographic stages of the formation of the natural *** av.rage geochemical record resolution for the bottom sediments of the lake was made uniquely for the East Siberian lake records and is equal to 35 years,while the palynological record approximates 110 years.
