Reduction behavior of pure and doped CeO2, the multi-phase ***2, ***0.2MnO3 . xCeO2, and ***2 composites, was studied under hydrogen containing atmosphere to address issues related to the improvement of electrochemical and catalytic performance of electrodes in fuel cells. The enhanced reduction of cerium oxide was observed initially at 800~C in all composites in spite of the presence of highly reducible transition metal cations that could lead to the increase in surface concentration of oxygen vacancies and generation of the electron enriched surface. Due to continuous reduction of cerium oxide in La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 ＂x- CeO2 and ***3 ＂xCeO2 （up to 10 h） composites the redox activity of the Ce4＋/Ce3＋ pair could be suppressed and additional measures are required for reversible spontaneous regeneration of Ce4＋. After 3 h exposure to H2-Ar at 800~C the reduction of cerium oxides and perovskite phases in La0.95ni0.6Fe0.403 ＂xCeO2 com- posites was diminished. The extent of cerium oxide involvement in the reduction process varies with time, and depends on its initial deviation from oxygen stoichiometry （that results in the larger lattice parameter and the longer pathway for O2 transport through the fluorite lattice）, chemical origin of transition metal cations in the perovskite, and phase diversity in multi-phase composites.

As part of an effort to build a prototype flow battery system using a nano-suspension containing β-ni（OH）2 nanoparticles as the cathode material, nano-sized β-ni（OH）2 particles with well-controlled particle size and morphology were synthesized via the one-step precipitation of a niCl2 precursor. The composition and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy （SEM） and X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The XRD patterns confirmed that β-ni（OH）2 was successfully synthesized, while SEM results showed that the particle sizes range from 70 to 150 nm. To ensure that ni（OH）2 could be employed in the nano-suspension flow battery, the electrochemical performance of the synthesized 13-ni（OH）2 was initially tested in pouch cells through charge/discharge cycling. The phase transformations occurring during charge/discharge were investigated using in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy to obtain the shift in the oxidation state of ni （X-ray adsorption near edge structure, XANES） and the distances between ni and surrounding atoms in charged and discharged states （extended X-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS）. XANES results indicated that the electrode in the discharged state was a mixture of phases because the edge position did not shift back completely. XAFS results further proved that the discharge capacity was provided by β-niOOH and the ratio between β-ni（OH）2 and γ-niOOH in the electrode in the discharged state was 71：29. Preliminary nano-suspension tests in a lab-scale cell were conducted to understand the behavior of the nano-suspension during charge/discharge cycling and to optimize the operating conditions.

The results of investigation of micromineralogy of disseminated-sulphide gold ore deposits of the Yana-Kolyma belt; the investigation was conducted via electron microscopy using a QEMSCAN （Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy） hardware and software instrument equipped with a Quantax quantitative analysis system. The following micro-mineral phases have been detected： native gold and silver, selenides of Au and Ag （naumanite and fishesserite （？）, hessite, sulfoarsenides of ni and Co （gersdorffite, cobaltite, rammelsbergite）, molibdenite and platinum group minerals. Our findings in disseminated sulfide ores selenides of Au and Ag, and molybdenite, together with the findings of platinum group minerals and ni and Co, emphasize the ＂black shale＂ specifics character of these types of deposits.

The toxicity of some pesticides, namely, Lontrel, Sencor, Roundup, Bentazon, and Hymexazol, and also Lontrel complexes with Cu, Co, Mn, Mg, Mo, ni, and Zn that are being widely used in agriculture and, hence, abundant in the environment were characterized by biotesting. The variation in the enzymatic activity of the luminous bacteria Beneckea harveyi and in the reproductive function of the infusoria Tetrahymena pyriformis was measured and used to determine toxicity factors. The toxicity of the above compounds was found to correlate with their ability to form stable complexes with adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

According to the content of heavy metals Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and ni in brown algae Sargassum miyabei from the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan, geochemical factors were calculated. The algae geochemical anomaly index (IGA) characterizes the degree of excess of the background concentrations of metals. The heavy metal pollution factor (Fp) is used to estimate the degree of pollution of the marine environment with heavy metals. The Peter the Great Bay has a low level of heavy metal pollution, but some parts of second-order bays, such as Amurskii Bay, Ussuriiskii Bay and Vostok Bay, have a moderate degree of pollution. The high pollution level was registed on the western coast of the Ussuriiskii Bay near the Vladivostok city landfill. Thirty percent of sampling stations were noted to have higher threshold levels of metals in the algae. These areas need to be monitored to assess their environmental status and measures should be applied to reduce the impact on the environment.

The authors aimed the study at examining macro- and trace elements content in elderly people of the 1 period of middle age （21-35） residing in Magadan town to assess the content of 25 trace elements in hair samples on individual and population levels by atom-emission spectrometry with inductively-bonded argon plasma. It turned out that the majority of surveyed subjects were characterized by deformation of element status demonstrated by excess and deficit of the basic essential elements of different degrees of manifestation. Deficit of Co （68% of surveyed people）, Mg （67%）, Ca （64%）, Cu （47%）, K （46%）, Zn （44%）, I （41%）, Na （33%）, P （27%） and Se （24%） was typical for female subjects as well as excess of Si （28%）, Zn （22%） and P （20%）. Male residents were characterized by deficit of Co （81%）, Ca （66%）, Mg （65%）, I （50%）, Cu （37%）, K and Na （27%） and excess of Zn （41%）. In individual cases it was noted excess concentration of nominally essential and toxic elements in both examined groups. They were： A1, As, Cd, Li, ni, Pb, Sn, V and B. While analyzing of medians of chemical concentration it was stated reliable sex-related differences （P 〈 0.05）： content of Ca, Mg and Mn was higher in hair samples of women, and content of As, B, Cd, Cr, K, Li, Na, P, Pb and V, on the contrary, was higher in male samples.

研究niTi形状记忆合金在应力下等温保温过程中的应变变化。为了研究可恢复应变,对ni_(51)Ti_(49)和Ti_(40.7)Hf_(9.5)ni_(44.8)Cu_(5)合金进行3种制度的保温处理,分别是:应力下冷却后在应力下保温(制度1);无应力和载荷下冷却后在应力下保温(制度2);具有双向形状记忆效应的样品在应力下保温(制度3)。结果表明,所有制度中,在应力下保温后样品均会发生应变变化。该应变在后续热处理或卸载后能恢复,因此表明应变变化是由等温马氏体相变引起的。这种等温应变取决于合金的化学成分、等温保温制度、应力和保温温度。Ti_(40.7)Hf_(9.5)ni_(44.8)Cu_(5)合金(制度1)和ni_(51)Ti_(49)合金(制度2)的最大等温应变分别为3.4%和6.1%。制度3中的保温伴随着较小的应变(小于0.3%)。讨论储存弹性能对等温马氏体相变的影响,结果表明,当相变伴随着较小的储存弹性能时,等温应变较大。
