The aim of the research was to develop new products and processes from a manufacturing waste from an Italian metallurgic *** company produced thin silver metallic films and the production scraps were silver *** possibility to use the silver flakes in water disinfection processes was *** antimicrobial activity of the flakes was investigated in batch using Escherichia coli as Gram-negative microorganism *** flakes did not show any antimicrobial activity,so they were activated with two different processes： thermal activation in reducing atmosphere and chemical activation,obtaining,respectively,reduced flakes （RF） and chemical flakes （CF）.The flakes,activated with either treatment,showed antimicrobial activity against *** kill rate was dependent on the type of activated *** chemical flakes were more efficient than reduced *** kill rate determined for 1 g of CF,1.0 ± 0.2 min ？1 ,was greater than the kill rate determined for 1 g of RF,0.069 ± 0.004 min ？1 .This was confirmed also by the minimum inhibitory concentration *** was demonstrated that the antimicrobial capability was dependent on flakes amount and on the type of aqueous ***,the flakes maintained their properties also when used a second ***,the antimicrobial activities of flakes were tested in an effluent of a wastewater treatment plant where a variety of heterotrophic bacteria were present.

Objective:To investigate the role of macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha(MIP-1 alpha) in the detrimental enhancement of matrix mnetalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) expression,release and activity induced by phagocytosis of malarial pigment(haemozoin,HZ) in human monocytes. Methods:Human adherent monocytes were unfed/fed with native HZ for 2 *** 24 hours. Aim: To specifically express the Asp567Gly human follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) under the control of its promoter to evaluate the phenotypic consequences in the presence of normal pituitary function. Methods: We produced transgenic mice overexpressing the Asp567Gly human FSHR under the control of a 1.5kb 5' flanking region fragment of its promoter. Results: Mice were phenotypically normal and fertile. In males, mRNA could be detected in the testis and the brain, indicating that the 1.5kb promoter fragment drives expression not only in the gonads. The testis weight/body weight ratio and the testosterone levels in transgenic and non-transgenic litter mates were similar. By in situ hybridisation we found that the transgenic FSHR was highly expressed in Sertoli cells, spermatocytes and round spermatids. However, a radioligand receptor assay failed to show a significant difference in total FSHR binding sites in testis homogenates of transgenic and wild type animals, suggesting that the transgenic FSHR is probably not translated into functional receptor protein. Conclusion: A 1.5kb 5 '-region of the human FSHR drives mRNA expression of the transgene in the testis but leads to ectopic expression in germ cells and in the brain. No phenotypic consequences could be documented due to the lack of protein expression.

Background The provision of environmental enrichments to Muscovy ducks could reduce the expression of the aggressive *** aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of black soldier fly(BSF)and yellow mealworm(YM)live larva provision on Muscovy duck performance,excreta corticosterone metabolites(ECM),behavior,and blood *** A total of 1263-day-old female Muscovy ducklings were allotted to 18 pens(6 replicates/treatment,7 birds/pen)and assigned to 3 experimental treatments:a control group fed commercial feed,and two experimental treatments fed commercial feed plus the 5%(based on the expected daily feed intake,as fed basis)of BSF and YM live larvae(BSF and YM groups,respectively).A two-phase feeding program was applied:starter(from 3 to 31 days of age)and grower-finisher(from 32 to 55 days of age).The live weight,average daily gain,average daily feed intake,and feed conversion ratio were *** consumption times were collected,and video recordings were performed during 3 periods(P)each day:the hour before(P1),during(P2),and after(P3)the larva *** were evaluated at 3,31,and ***,the total red and white blood cell counts,serum proteins,lipids,and liver and renal function serum enzymes were evaluated on 12 birds/*** The experimental treatment did not affect the growth performance of the birds(P>0.05).Larva consumption times were always similar between the two insect species,except at 14–18 days of age,were BSF larvae were consumed faster than YM larvae(PP3;P<0.05).Finally,the provision of live BSF and YM larvae significantly reduced the ECM at 55 days of age and the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio(P<0.05).Conclusions Live BSF and YM larva supplementatio

The use of bioactive glass(BG)particles as a filler for the development of composite electrospun fibers has already been widely reported and *** novelty of the present research work is represented by the use of benign solvents(like acetic acid and formic acid)for electrospinning of composite fibers containing BG particles,by using a blend of PCL and *** this work,different BG particle sizes were investigated,namely nanosized and micron-sized.A preliminary investigation about the possible alteration of BG particles in the electrospinning solvents was performed using SEM *** obtained composite fibers were investigated in terms of morphological,chemical and mechanical *** in vitro mineralization assay in simulated body fluid(SBF)was performed to investigate the capability of the composite electrospun fibers to induce the formation of hydroxycarbonate apatite(HCA).

The Technical Services and the Medical Administration of the Hospitals of Trieste have been working for years to ensure the optimal functioning of the Surgery, Intensive Care, Diagnostics and Research Services offered to the Patients and to the University in an 800-bed hospital complex, transforming and innovating the buildings and support installations. We have dedicated special attention to the technologies necessary to guarantee the continuity of the power supply to the electromedical devices, increasingly numerous in highly specialized hospitals. We report the power of the generator sets and the UPS and our opinion that their power must be related to the overall consumption of the hospital, with a reserve margin.

Background:Recent investigations highlighted that Hermetia illucens(BSF)larva meal can be a valuable alternative protein source for aquafeed *** this study,in substitution of fishmeal,we used increasing inclusion levels of a partially defatted BSF larva meal in low fishmeal-based diets for rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum)and we evaluated the related implications in terms of growth performance,physical characteristics,proximate and fatty acid(FA)compositions of the fillets,gut and liver histology,and diet *** a 131-day trial,576 fish(100.1±9.29 g)were randomly allotted to 24 tanks(24 fish/tank,4 replicates/treatment).Six experimental diets were produced to have partial replacement of fishmeal(0,10%,20%,30%,40%and 50%)by increasing levels of BSF meal(0%[BSF0],3%[BSF3],6%[BSF6],9%[BSF9],12%[BSF12]and 15%[BSF15]on as fed basis,respectively).Results:No differences were observed among the treatments for all the considered growth performance *** viscero and hepato-somatic indexes showed significant differences among the treatments,with the highest values observed in the BSF15 *** differences were recorded in terms of fillet’s physical characteristics,dry matter(DM),crude protein(CP)and ether extract(EE)*** saturated and monounsaturated FA increased,while polyunsaturated FA(particularly n-3 FA)decreased while increasing the HI meal inclusion in the *** of liver and gut was not affected,whereas,in posterior gut,villi were higher in BSF6 and BSF9 compared to BSF3 *** apparent digestibility of DM,CP,EE and gross energy did not vary among the ***:These results suggest that a partially defatted BSF meal could be included up to 15%in low fishmeal-based diets for rainbow trout with no adverse effects on growth performance,fillet’s physical characteristics,gut and liver health,and diet *** the contrary,the fillet FA composition worsened while increasing the level of BSF

Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a condition based on an immune-mediated mechanism that determines the premature hyperdestruction of the thrombocytes in peripheral blood, as well as their deficient synthesis at the level of the bone marrow. The chronic immune purpura could be of primary, idiopathic cause, as well as of secondary cause, occurring in the context of other pathologies. The characteristic of the primary form of the disease is the presence of isolated thrombocytopenia, defined by a platelet count under 100,000/mm3 in peripheral blood, in the absence of supporting causes for thrombocytopenia. In the secondary form of the disease, the decreased platelet count is due to associated pathologies involving an immune mechanism, responsible for the occurrence of thrombocytopenia. This study aims to emphasize the involvement of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), dermatomyositis, rheumatoid polyarthritis or antiphospholipid syndrome in the pathogenesis of secondary thrombocytopenia. Furthermore, the study was conducted on a sample of 40 patients, divided into two groups: The first group comprising asymptomatic patients diagnosed with thrombocytopenia following routine tests, and the second group comprising patients with hemorrhagiparous symptomatology (petechiae, ecchymoses, epistaxis, gingivorrhagia), who went to the doctor in order to determine the etiology of the hemorrhagiparous syndrome. The average value of the thrombocytopenia of the patients included in the study was of 60.20 ± 19.75 × 103/μL. Laboratory investigations performed in order to establish the etiology of thrombocytopenia showed that 80% of patients presented positive antiplatelet antibodies. Moreover, 20% of the patients in the study showed positive anti-double-stranded DNA, 20% were identified with IgG anticardiolipin antibodies, while antinuclear antibodies were present in 10% of the patients.
