Plastic pollution, both primary.and secondary. is an environmental challenge, prompting regulatory.actions at global and regional levels. With increasing research about the impacts of micro- and nanoplastics on ecosy.tems and human health, governments worldwide have undertaken efforts to address this issue. The global community.has advanced regulatory.efforts that have led to the implementation of national laws or regulations in numerous countries. These measures ban or restrict the use of primary.and secondary.microplastics and nanoplastics. An overview of global and European regulatory.frameworks is presented to provide context for the United States (US). In the endeavor to document plastics regulation development in the US, a description of regulatory.agencies and their roles in advancing policy.and rules as well as future direction and areas for improvement in regulating plastics are introduced. A discussion of what emerging regulations mean to utilities and industries is also provided along with a comparison of regulatory.frameworks.

Numerical Modeling of Mass Transfer in the Interaction between River Biofilm and a Turbulent Boundary.Lay.r

In this article dedicated to the modeling of vertical mass transfers between the biofilm and the bulk flow, we have, in the first instance, presented the methodology.used, followed by.the presentation of various results obtained through analy.es conducted on velocity.fields, different fluxes, and overall transfer coefficients. Due to numerical constraints (resolution of relevant spatial scales), we have restricted the analy.is to low Schmidt numbers (Sc=0.1, Sc=1, and Sc=10) and a single roughness Rey.olds number (Re*=150). The analy.is of instantaneous concentration fields from various simulations revealed logarithmic concentration profiles above the canopy. In this zone, the concentration is relatively.homogeneous for longer times. The analy.is of results also showed that the contribution of molecular diffusion to the total flux depends on the Schmidt number. This contribution is negligible for Schmidt numbers Sc≥0.1, but nearly.balances the turbulent flux for Sc=0.1. In the canopy. the local Sherwood number, given by.the ratio of the total flux (within or above the canopy. to the molecular diffusion flux at the wall, also depends on the Schmidt number and varies significantly.between the canopy.and the region above. The exchange velocity. a purely.hy.rody.amic parameter, is independent of the Schmidt number and is on the order of 10% of in the present case. This study.also reveals that nutrient absorption by.organisms near the wall depends on the Schmidt number. Such absorption is facilitated by.lower Schmidt numbers.

Summer precipitation in the Three Rivers Source Region (TRSR) of China is vital for the headwaters of the y.llow, y.ngtze, and Lancang rivers and exhibits significant interdecadal variability. This study.investigates the influence of the East Asian westerly.jet (EAWJ) on TRSR rainfall. A strong correlation is found between TRSR summer precipitation and the Jet Zonal Position Index (JZPI) of the EAWJ from 1961 to 2019 (R = 0.619, p y.es, this research identifies the influence of large-scale circulation anomalies associated with the Atlantic–Eurasian teleconnection (AEA) from the North Atlantic (NA). The interdecadal variability.between the NA and central tropical Pacific (CTP) significantly.affects TRSR precipitation. This influence is mediated through the AEA via a Rossby.wave train extending eastward along the EAWJ, and another south of 45°N. Moreover, the NA–CTP Opposite Phase Index (OPI), which quantifies the difference between the summer mean sea surface temperatures of the NA and the CTP, is identified as a critical factor in modulating the strength of this teleconnection and influencing the zonal position of the EAWJ. © 2024

Despite the engineering potential by.the co-existence of inorganic and organic substances to protect vulnerable metallic materials from corrosive environments,both their interaction and in-situ formation mechanism to induce the nature-inspired composite remained less *** present work used three distinctive mercaptobenzazole(MB)compounds working as corrosion inhibitors,such as 2-mercaptobenzoxazole(MBO),2-mercaptobenzothiazole(MBT),and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(MBI)in a bid to understand how the geometrical structure arising from O,S,and N atoms affected the interaction toward inorganic *** compounds that were used here to control the corrosion kinetics would be interacted readily.with the pre-existing MgO lay.r fabricated by.plasma *** phenomenon triggered the nucleation of the root network since MB compounds were seen to be adsorbed actively.on the defective surface through the active sites in MB ***,the molecule with twin donor atoms adjacent to the mercapto-sites affected the facile growth of the grass-like structures with‘uniform’distribution via molecular self-assembly.which showed better corrosion performance than those with having dissimilar donor atoms with the inhibition efficiency.η)of 97%*** formation mechanism underly.ng nucleation and growth behavior of MB molecule was discussed concerning the theoretical calculation of density.functional theory.

Deep bed filtration model for cake filtration and erosion

Many.phenomena in nature and technology.are associated with the filtration of suspensions and colloids in porous media. Two main ty.es of particle deposition,namely. cake filtration at the inlet and deep bed filtration throughout the entire porous medium, are studied by.different models. A unified approach for the transport and deposition of particles based on the deep bed filtration model is proposed. A variable suspension flow rate, proportional to the number of free pores at the inlet of the porous medium, is considered. To model cake filtration, this flow rate is introduced into the mass balance equation of deep bed filtration. For the cake filtration without deposit erosion,the suspension flow rate decreases to zero, and the suspension does not penetrate deep into the porous medium. In the case of the cake filtration with erosion, the suspension flow rate is nonzero, and the deposit is distributed throughout the entire porous medium. An exact solution is obtained for a constant filtration function. The method of characteristics is used to construct the asy.ptotics of the concentration front of suspended and retained particles for a filtration function in a general form. Explicit formulae are obtained for a linear filtration function. The properties of these solutions are studied in detail.
