A simple method to model the reduced environment of lake bottom sapropel formation

The Kambala and Barchin brackish lakes （Baraba steppe, southern West Siberia） contain an organic-rich sapropel layer that was formed in oxygen-depleted waters. We measured the bulk sediment elemental composition, the water chemistry and determined the mineralogical composition and predominant biota species （Diatoms and Cyanobacteria in phytoplankton community respectively） in the lakes. The result indicates that the first lake has a siliceous type of sapropel and the second a carbonaceous one. A computer thermodynamic model was developed for chemical interaction in water-bottom sediment systems of the Kambala and Barchin Lakes. The surface sodium bicarbonate waters are supersaturated with respect to calcite, magnesite （or low Mg-calcite）, quartz and chlorite with minor strontianite, apatite and goethite （pH 8.9-9.3, Eh 0.3 v）. Nevertheless, it is shown that during sapropel deposition, deep silt waters should be anoxic （Eh〈0 v）. The virtual component CH20 has been used to create an anoxic environment suitable for pyrite formation due to the biotic community impact and abiotic reduction. Thermodynamic calculation has shown that silt water is not necessarily euxinic （anoxic and sulfidic）. Depending on Eh, sulfate sulfur can dominate in solution, causing the formation of gypsum together with pyrite. An attempt was made to find a reason for solution supersaturation with respect to Ca and Mg ions due to their complexation with humic acids.

Objective:Glioma is a highly invasive tumor,frequently disposed in essential areas of the brain,which makes its surgical excision extremely difficult;meanwhile adjuvant therapy remains quite ***:In the current report,a new therapeutic approach in curing malignant neoplasms has been performed on the U87 human glioblastoma *** approach,termed"Karanahan",is aimed at the eradication of cancer stem cells(CSCs),which were recently shown to be capable of internalizing fragments of extracellular double-stranded *** being internalized,these fragments interfere in the process of repairing interstrand cross-links caused by exposure to appropriate cytostatics,and such an interference results either in elimination of CSCs or in the loss of their tumorigenic *** of the approach requires a scheduled administration of cytostatic and complex composite double-stranded DNA ***:U87 cells treated in vitro in accordance with the Karanahan approach completely lost their tumorigenicity and produced no grafts upon intracerebral transplantation into immunodeficient *** SCID mice with developed subcutaneous grafts,the treatment resulted in reliable slowing down of tumor growth rate(Pveloped graft and subsequent therapeutic treatment,the Karanahan approach was shown to reliably slow down the tumor growth rate and increase the median survival of the mice twofold relative to the ***:The effectiveness of the Karanahan approach has been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo in treating developed subcutaneous grafts as well as orthotopic grafts after surgical excision of the tumor.

FMRI contributions to addressing autobiographical memory impairment in temporal lobe pathology

Episodic autobiographical memory(AM) allows one, through the recollection of sensory-perceptual details, thoughts and feelings, to become aware of an event as belonging to one's own past as well as being able to project into one's future. Because AM provides a sense of self-continuity, contributes to the integrity of the self, and helps predicting future experiences, any deficit of AM may have debilitating consequences for everyday life functioning. Understanding AM failure and the underlying neural mechanisms has the potential to shed light on brain reorganization mechanisms and engagement of compensatory processes. Functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) provides the most promising imaging method to tackle these issues. We reviewed evidence from the few studies that used fMRI to investigate the functionality of the residual tissue, the neural reorganization and compensatory mechanisms in patients with neurological conditions due to impaired medial temporal lobe. Overall, these studies highlight the importance of the left hippocampus, which when atrophied and not functional leads to AM deficits but its residual functionality may support relatively normal AM recollection. When damaged hippocampal tissue is not functional, other brain regions(e.g., the medial prefrontal cortex) may be involved to compensate impairment, but they appear generally ineffective to support detailed episodic recollection.

Reported here are two cases of a modified Appleby operation for borderline resectable ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic body, in one of which a R0 distal resection was attended to by excision, not only of the celiac axis, but also of the common and left hepatic arteries in the presence of arterial anatomic variation Michels, type Ⅷb. The possibility and avenues of the maintenance of the blood supply to the left hepatic lobe after surgical aggression of this kind are demonstrated employing computed tomography (CT) and 3-D CT angiography. Furthermore, both cases highlight all important worrisome aspects of pancreatic cancer resectability prediction.

Sarcopenia in cirrhosis: Prospects for therapy targeted to gut microbiota

Decreased muscle mass and function,also known as sarcopenia,is common in patients with cirrhosis and is associated with a poor *** the pathogenesis of this disorder has not been fully elucidated,a disordered gutmuscle axis probably plays an important *** barrier function of the gut and liver,gut dysbiosis,and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO)can lead to increased blood levels of ammonia,lipopolysaccharides,pro-inflammatory mediators,and *** factors have complex negative effects on muscle mass and *** interventions that target the gut microbiota(long-term use of rifaximin,lactulose,lactitol,or probiotics)positively affect most links of the compromised gut-muscle axis in patients with cirrhosis by decreasing the levels of hyperammonemia,bacterial translocation,and systemic inflammation and correcting gut dysbiosis and ***,although these drugs are promising,they have not yet been investigated in randomized controlled trials specifically for the treatment and prevention of sarcopenia in patients with *** data exist on the effects of fecal transplantation on most links of gut-muscle axis in cirrhosis;however,the results of animal experimental studies are promising.
