Objective.:Occult cancer may be found in a small proportion of women undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). However,the results and significance of peritoneal wash cytology in this setting are not clear. The objective of this study was to determine the significance of cytologic mesothelial atypia in the peritonealwashings of patients undergoing RRSO. Methods.:We conducted a retrospective chart review of all patients undergoing RRSO from July 2002 to December 2003. Patient charts were reviewed for information regarding cytology,pathology,demographics,surgical procedure and findings,and outcome. Results.:One hundred thirty women underwent RRSO during the study period. One hundred seventeen had washings performed during the procedure and constitute the study cohort. The median age at the time of the procedure was 48 years (range,33-78 years). Final cytology was reported as normal in 102 patients (87%),mesothelial atypia in 13 (11%),and non-satisfactory in 2 (2%). Ovarian and tubal histopathology was normal in all cases. No association was found between mesothelial atypia and age,prior breast cancer,or prior abdominal surgery. Twenty-nine patients had previously undergone genetic testing for BRCA1/2 mutations as part of ongoing prospective follow-up studies. Four (24%) of 17 patients with a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation were found to have mesothelial atypia compared to 1 (8%) of 12 with no mutation. With a median follow-up time of 20 months (range,1-40 months),none of the patients with mesothelial atypia were diagnosed with peritoneal malignancy following RRSO. Conclusion.:In this study,mesothelial atypia was identified in 11%of patients who had peritoneal washings performed at the time of RRSO. No patients with mesothelial atypia went on to develop peritoneal carcinoma. The link between mesothelial atypia and mutations in BRCA1/2 and the need to perform peritoneal washings in this setting are both yet to be determined.

Bone loss prevention in ovariectomized rats using stable amorphous calcium carbonate

In assessing the relationship between calcium supplementation and maintaining bone mass or reducing the risk of fracture, the effectiveness of calcium supplementation has never been decisive. Freshwater crayfish rely on amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), an instable polymorph of calcium carbonate, as the main mineral in the exoskeleton and in the temporary storage organ, the gastrolith. Inspired by the crayfish model, we have previously shown an increase in calcium bioavailability in rats administered with synthetic stable ACC vs. crystalline calcium carbonate (CCC). The current study compared the effects of amorphous calcium derived from either gastrolith or synthetic ACC with those of crystalline calcium, found in commercial CCC or calciumcitrate supplements, in a bone loss prevention model. Rats were subjected to either sham or ovariectomy (OVX) operation (n^20/ group) followed by administration of food pellets supplemented with 0.5% calcium from either source over 12 weeks. Micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histomorphometric analyses revealed bone loss prevention by both gastrolith and ACC treatments, manifested by an increase in morphometric bone parameters, compared to both CCC-?and calcium citrate-treated groups. Both gastrolith and ACC treatments resulted in bone formation in the tibia cancellous bone, indicated by dynamic histomorphometry parameters, compared to either the CCC or calcium citrate treatments. Levels of urine deoxypyridinoline (DPD), suggested an anti-resorptive effect of ACC, which was also the only treatment that led to a significant increase in vertebral mechanical strength, as supported by μCT analysis of topology and orientation parameters of the vertebral trabeculae. To our knowledge, such levels of bone loss prevention by calcium supplements have never been reported. Does capsule endoscopy have an added value in patients with perianal disease and a negative work up for Crohn's disease?

利用二滩地震遥测台网１９９７年５～１２月的地震记录资料，对“二滩水电站地震遥测台网持续时间震级的研制”一文中得到的平均持续时间震级公式进行了实际检验。检验结果表明，用平均持续时间确定的震级ＭＤ与用水平地动位移确定的震级ＭＬ相差绝大多数在０１０级以内，这说明了该经验公式符合二滩地震台网的实际。并且该经验公式还为速报限幅地震的震级提供了可靠的依据和方便，在地震速报中具有突出的实用价值。

GSK3β regulates D1 dopamine receptor phosphorylation and function

Many protein kinases have been shown to regulate the phosphorylation of G - protein - coupled receptors. These kinases, together with associated protein phosphatases form complexes that regulate the function of G - protein - coupled receptors. In brain, protein phosphatasel ( PP1 ) exists as a complex with PP1 inhibitor - 2 ( I - 2). Phosphorylation of I - 2 by cdk5 or GSK3βresults in activation of PP1. The present study was designed to investigate the role of GSK3βin the regulation of D1 dopamine receptor function. In rat and rabbit frontal cortex (FCX), we found that GSK3βco -precipitates with D1A dopamine receptor. Furthermore, GSK3w is physically associated with I -2, indicating that GSK3β/I -2/PP1/D1 receptor form a receptor - kinase - phosphatase complex. In prenatal cocaine - exposed rabbit, we reported a selective impairment of D1 dopamine receptor function in FCX that is the result of D1 receptor hyper - phosphorylation that is due to decreased PP1 activity. Interestingly, we detected a significant decrease in GSK3βactivity in FCX of cocaine- exposed rabbits. Moreover, decreased association between GSK3βand I -2 was also observed, suggesting that GSK3βactivity is nee ded for the association between these two molecules. Indeed, preincubation of GSK3βinhibitor 1 with FCX membranes induced a decrease in association between the kinase and I -2. In accord with the decrease in FCX GSK3βactivity that is found in prenatal cocaine - exposed rabbit, PP1 activity, and specifically, Dt receptor - associated PP1 activity, was also decreased. Taken together, the present results indicate that GSK3βforms a complex with Dt dopamine receptor, PP1 and I - 2 that regulates D1 receptor function via modulation of PP1 activity. Inhibition of GSK3βactivity, as is the case in prenatal cocaine - exposed brain, results in reduced PP1 activity and hyper - phosphorylation of the D1 dopamine receptor and ultimately leads to the dysfunction of the D1 receptor. HAXPES (hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) is a powerful emerging instrument in surface analysis. It extended the photoelectron energy range up to 15,000 eV and opened the possibility to study much thicker films, buried layers and bulk electronic properties. In order to study these features, data for the electron IMFP (inelastic mean free path) at these energies is needed. To date, only calculated IMFP are available at energies above 5,000 eV and therefore experimental validation of these calculations are essential. In this paper, a new approach for using the HAXPES spectra is presented. This approach, treats the attenuated part of the electron spectrum as a whole to calculating the average electron energy loss. This average electron energy loss is the result of inelastic collisions in the material and hence, carry with it information about the electron transport poses. Carbon layers with thicknesses between 20 and 75 nanometer deposited over copper substrate were used to test this approach at the Spanish beam-line (Spline) in the ESRF (European synchrotron radiation facility). The measured results showed good agreement with the predictions of the multiple inelastic scattering theory. In addition, an algorithm for the experimental evaluation of electron IMFP, using the measured energy loss, is proposed.
