Phylogenetic analysis of the five internal genes and evolutionary pathways of the Greek H3N8 equine influenza virus

To amplify the NS, NP, PB1, PB2 and PA internal genes of two equine H3N8 influenza A viruses isolated in Greece in 2003 and 2007 five primer pairs were designed. The derived sequences were analysed from a phylogenetic point of view and compared with the evolutionary patters of the HA and NA proteins. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of the five internal genes of the Greek strains showed high similarity (99.3% - 99.7%) to strains isolated from outbreaks in Europe and Asia during 2002-2008. A total of 11 amino acid substitutions of the surface protein NA and the RNP complex proteins were identified in the Greek strains compared to those of progenitor viruses circulating up to 2003. These substitutions were repeated in Chinese and Mongolian isolates from outbreaks in 2007-2008. Notably NS1 protein did not acquired amino acid substitutions and moreover, a stop codon introduced at position 220 was stably maintained in the Greek strains. Phylogenetic trees of the five internal genes did not show the same separation in clades. Greek strains classified them into the American sublineage (as for the PA) Florida clade II (as for the NP, NS1 and PB1) and among Chinese strains of 2007-2008 outbreaks (as for the PB2). Additionally, evolutionary profiles of these internal proteins, except PB2, indicated a parallel evolution fashion to the HA protein, suggesting the possible occurrence of genetic reassortment between H3N8 viruses of district evolutionary lineages. In conclusion, phylogenetic analysis of the internal genes reported in this study could establish a candidate framework for future scientific communications on the phylogenetic diversity and evolution of the equine influenza viruses.

BACKGROUND Anastomotic leak constitutes a major problem in abdominal *** insufficiency,topical or systemic factors contribute to disrupted healing of the performed bowel anastomosis and result in anastomosis leakage,with detrimental effects on patient postoperative *** the investigation of several factors and the invention of protective materials,the ideal agent to prevent anastomotic leaks is yet to be *** To study the effect of platelet rich plasma(PRP)on the healing of bowel *** A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed,EMBASE,and Scopus databases to identify studies investigating the effect of PRP application on bowel *** Eighteen studies were eligible with a total population of 712 animals including rats(14 studies),rabbits(2 studies)and pigs(2 studies).No postoperative complications were reported following PRP *** out of 18 studies reported a statistically significant higher anastomosis bursting pressure in PRP groups compared to control either in healthy animals or animal models with underlying condition or intervention,such as intraperitoneal chemotherapy or *** results were reported by ten studies in terms of tissue hydroxyproline *** study reported significant increase in collagen deposition in PRP *** application resulted in significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration in the presence of peritonitis or intraperitoneal chemotherapy(6 studies).CONCLUSION The application of PRP is associated with improved bowel anastomosis outcomes,especially in animal models having an underlying condition affecting the normal healing *** application seems to augment the normal healing process under these ***,further studies are needed to investigate the potential role of PRP on bowel anastomosis healing,especially in clinical settings.

Perinatal Factors of Developmental Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common pediatric neurobehavioral disorder often treated in the primary care setting. It shows a high and chronic level of inattention, impulsivity/hyperactivity and/or both, and can affect more than 2 million school-age children. The researchers are not sure about the exact causes of the disorder, but it seems that apart from genetic factors, perinatal factors seem to dynamically contribute to the development of the disorder. Purpose: The aim of this review was to investigate the perinatal and obstetric factors related to the development of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in childhood. Method: An online review of English language studies published from 2002 to 2020, using the Embase, PsychINFO, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. From 1100 studies only 17 were included in the review since they met the inclusion criteria. Conclusions: The results of the review showed that apart from heredity and genetic factors, various conditions in pregnancy or the mother’s way of life in pregnancy, adverse conditions in labor and infancy can contribute on their own or in combination to the development of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in childhood. Obstetric vigilance to detect risk factors in pregnancy in combination with the prevention of obstetric complications is the key in preventing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND Kidney transplantation leads to continuous improvement in the survival rates of kidney transplant recipients(KTRs)and has been established as the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage kidney ***-related quality of life(HRQoL)has become an important outcome *** is highly important to develop reliable methods to evaluate HRQoL with disease-specific *** To translate the disease-specific instrument Kidney Transplant Questionnaire 25(KTQ-25)to the Greek language and perform a cross-cultural *** The translation and adaptation of the original English version of the KTQ-25 to the Greek language were performed based on the International Quality of Life RESULTS Eighty-four KTRs(59 males;mean age 53.5±10.7 years;mean estimated glomerular filtration rate 47.7±15.1 mL/min/1.73 m2;mean transplant vintage 100.5±83.2 months)completed the Greek version of the KTQ-25 and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey,and the results were used to evaluate the reliability of the Greek *** Cronbach alpha coefficients for all the KTQ-25 dimensions were satisfactory(physical symptoms=0.639,fatigue=0.856,uncertainty/fear=0.661,appearance=0.593,emotions=0.718,total score=0.708).The statistically significant correlation coefficients among the KTQ-25 dimensions ranged from 0.226 to *** correlation coeffi-cients of the KTQ-25 dimensions with the SF-36 physical component summary(PCS)ranged from 0.196 to 0.550;the correlation coefficients of the KTQ-25 with the SF-36 mental component summary(MCS)ranged from 0.260 to 0.655;and the correlation coefficients of the KTQ-25 with the total scores with the SF-36 PCS and MCS were 0.455 and 0.613,*** According to the findings,the Greek version of the KTQ-25 is valid and reliable for administration among kidney transplant patients in Greece.

Development of Biofunctionalized Cellulose Acetate Nanoscaffolds for Heart Valve Tissue Engineering

Currently-used mechanical and biological heart valve prostheses have a satisfactory short-term performance, but may exhibit several major drawbacks on the long-term. Mechanical prostheses, based on carbon, metallic and polymeric components, require permanent anticoagulation treatment, and their usage often leads to adverse reactions, e.g. thromboembolic complications and endocarditis. In recent years, there is a need for a heart valve prosthesis that can grow, repair and remodel. The concept of tissue engineering offers good prospects into the development of such a device. An ideal scaffold should mimic the structural and purposeful profile of materials found in the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture. The goal of this study was to develop cellulose acetate scaffolds (CA) for valve tissue regeneration. After their thorough physicochemical and biological characterization, a biofunctionalization process was made to increase the cell proliferation. Especially, the surface of scaffolds was amplified with functional molecules, such as RGD peptides (Arg-Gly-Asp) and YIGSRG laminins (Tyrosine-Isoleucine-Glycine-Serine-Arginine-Glycine) which immobilized through biotin-streptavidin bond, the strongest non-covalent bond in nature. Last step was to successfully coat an aortic metallic valve with CA biofunctionallized nanoscaffolds and cultivate cells in order to create an anatomical structure comparable to the native valve. Promising results have been obtained with CA-based nanoscaffolds. We found that cells grown successfully on the biofunctionalized valve surface thereby scaffolds that resemble the native tissues, elaborated with bioactive factors such as RGD peptides and laminins not only make the valve’s surface biocompatible but also they could promote endothyliazation of cardiac valves causing an anti-coagulant effect

Locating Binding Constraints in LP Problems

In this work, a new method is presented for determining the binding constraints of a general linear maximization problem. The new method uses only objective function values at points which are determined by simple vector operations, so the computational cost is inferior to the corresponding cost of matrix manipulation and/or inversion. This method uses a recently proposed notion for addressing such problems: the average of each constraint. The identification of binding constraints decreases the complexity and the dimension of the problem resulting to a significant decrease of the computational cost comparing to Simplex-like methods. The new method is highly useful when dealing with very large linear programming (LP) problems, where only a relatively small percentage of constraints are binding at the optimal solution, as in many transportation, management and economic problems, since it reduces the size of the problem. The method has been implemented and tested in a large number of LP problems. In LP problems without superfluous constraints, the algorithm was 100% successful in identifying binding constraints, while in a set of large scale LP tested problems that included superfluous constraints, the power of the algorithm considered as statistical tool of binding constraints identification, was up to 90.4%.

Fault Detection of Fuel Injectors Based on One-Class Classifiers

Fuel injectors are considered as an important component of combustion engines. Operational weakness can possibly lead to the complete machine malfunction, decreasing reliability and leading to loss of production. To overcome these circumstances, various condition monitoring techniques can be applied. The application of acoustic signals is common in the field of fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. Advanced signal processing is utilized for the construction of features that are specialized in detecting fuel injector faults. A performance comparison between novelty detection algorithms in the form of one-class classifiers is presented. The one-class classifiers that were tested included One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) and One-Class Self Organizing Map (OCSOM). The acoustic signals of fuel injectors in different operational conditions were processed for feature extraction. Features from all the signals were used as input to the one-class classifiers. The one-class classifiers were trained only with healthy fuel injector conditions and compared with new experimental data which belonged to different operational conditions that were not included in the training set so as to contribute to generalization. The results present the effectiveness of one-class classifiers for detecting faults in fuel injectors.

The number of patients with chronic kidney disease re-quiring renal replacement therapy has increased world-wide. The most common replacement therapy is hemo-dialysis （HD）. Vascular access （VA） has a key role for successful treatment. Despite the advances that have taken place in the feld of the HD procedure, few things have changed with regards to VA in recent years. Ar-teriovenous fstula （AVF）, polytetrafuoroethylene graft and the cuffed double lumen silicone catheter are the most common used for VA. In the long term, a number of complications may present and more than one VA is needed during the HD life. The most common com-plications for all of VA types are thrombosis, bleeding and infection, the most common cause of morbidity in these patients. It has been estimated that VA dysfunc-tion is responsible for 20% of all hospitalizations. The annual cost of placing and looking after dialysis VA in the United States exceeds 1 billion dollars per year. A good functional access is also vital in order to deliver adequate HD therapy. It seems that the native AVF that Brescia and Cimino described in 1966 still remains the frst choice for VA. The native forearm AVFs have the longest survival and require the fewest interventions. For this reason, the forearm AVF is the frst choice, fol-lowed by the upper-arm AVF, the arteriovenous graft and the cuffed central venous catheter is the final choice. In conclusion, VA remains the most importantissue for patients on HD and despite the technical im-provements, a number of problems and complications have to be resolved.

Esophageal cancer(EC)is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis,ranking seventh in incidence and sixth cancer-related deaths *** is classified in two main types,the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)and esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC),with ESCC being more common in Eastern Europe,South Asia,and Africa,while EAC is prevalent in Western Europe and North *** analysis identifies three subgroups of ESCC,each with distinct genetic mutations and treatment ***-stage EC is often difficult to detect,leading to late-stage diagnoses that necessitate systemic drug therapies,including molecular-targeted therapies and ***,particularly immune checkpoint inhibitor,has shown promising results in improving survival rates for metastatic or persistent *** is particularly important to target to multidisciplinary combination therapies,integrating surgery,chemoradiotherapy,targeted therapy and ***,radioimmunotherapy is being explored for its potential to enhance treatment efficacy,especially in advanced and metastatic ***,the pathological complete response rate to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy remains suboptimal,highlighting the need for novel treatment *** research should focus on optimizing treatment combinations and identifying predictive biomarkers to improve clinical outcomes for EC patients.

Current patterns of the sun protection measures adopted by nurses and the risk factors influencing their compliance

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing worldwide. Included in high risk group are people who have light common phenotypic factors (hair, skin, eyes), have high number of naevi, report previous sunburns and have a family history of skin cancer. Protecting the skin from the sun by wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure are recommended among primary preventive activities. The purpose of this study was to describe the current patterns of sun protection measures adopted by nurses and to examine the association between compliance with sun protection measures and the main risk factors of melanoma. This cross sectional study was conducted in 2007 during the Annual Greek National Conference of Nursing. Nurses most commonly chose to use sunscreen, to wear glasses, to use an umbrella or to seek for shade in order to protect themselves against sun exposure. Finally, phenotypic factors, previous sunburns and common naevi presence were found to affect nurses’ attitude towards protective measures. This study poses the necessity of targeting high risk groups for melanoma through campaigns aiming to foster sun protection behaviours.
