AIM:To find out whether serum oxidizability potential correlates with exercise test(EXT) parameters and predicts their results in chronic ischemic heart disease(IHD) ***:Oxidizability potential was determined in a group of chronic IHD patients who underwent a symptom limited EXT upon initiation of a cardiac rehabilitation *** thermo-chemiluminescence(TCL) assay was used to assess serum oxidizability *** assay is based on heat-induced oxidation of serum,leading to the formation of electronically excited species in the form of unstable carbonyls,which further decompose into stable carbonyls and light energy(low chemiluminescence).Measured photons emission is represented by a kinetic curve which is described by its amplitude and slope(= ratio).We assessed the correlations of TCL ratio with exercise duration,metabolic equivalents(METS),maximal heart rate(mHR),maximal systolic BP,> 1 mm S-T depression,diabetes,hypertension,smoking,left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) > or 40%(P < 0.01).A trend for lower TCL ratio(%) was found in diabetic,hypertensive,and post-coronary bypass surgery patients.A paradoxically low TCL ratio(low oxidizability potential) was observed in patients without S-T depression compared to patients with S-T depression(189 ± 22 vs 201 ± 15,P

It is well appreciated that several neurohormones and signaling cascades are activated that promote long-term deterioration of cardiac function and structure. Activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and the adrenergic system is closely related to heart failure. Common gene variants that encode neurohormonal, adrenergic and intracellular proteins have been demonstrated to modulate the course and consequences of heart failure. However, the literature is replete with conflicting results and it remains uncertain as to whether particular gene variants predispose heart failure. Therefore, the main purpose of this review was to discuss the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are located in genes encoding elements of the RAAS and the adrenergic system on the predisposition to and survival from heart failure. Most studies indicate that common SNPs encoding elements of the RAAS and the adrenergic system do not predispose individuals to heart failure. Conversely, it has been demonstrated that ARB1 Arg389Gly, GRK5 Gln41Leu, ACE I/D, CYP11B2 C-344T and AGTR1 A+1166C modulate pharmacological responses and have a considerable impact on cardiacrelated survival. It should not be expected, however, that a single polymorphism determines survival, given that multiple gene products and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis of heart failure. Therefore, future studies should consider the interaction effects of multiple genes in populations that are as homogeneous as possible with respect to environmental characteristics.

Feeding strategies of an organism depend on the multimodal sensory processing that most efficiently integrates available visual,chemosensory,and/or mechanoreceptive cues as part of their environmental *** blind cavefish morph of Astyanax mexicanus has developed sensory-dependent behaviors to find food more efficiently than their eyed,surface-morph counterparts while in *** the absence of light,adult cavefish have evolved enhanced behaviors,such as vibration attraction behavior(VAB),and changes in feeding ***,we identified evolved differences in cavefish larval prey capture(LPC)*** the dark,LPC is more efficient in cavefish than in surface ***,different cave populations express laterality in their LPC and strike towards prey preferentially located on their left or right *** suggests the occurrence,to some extent,of divergent LPC evolution among cave *** LPC can be triggered exclusively by a vibration stimulus in both surface and cavefish,we provide evidence that LPC is,at least partially,a multimodal sensory process different from adult *** also found that a lack of food may exacerbate the laterality of ***,we proposed a mathematical model for explaining laterality based on a balance between:(1)enlarged range of foraging field(behavioral or perceptive)due to asymmetry,(2)food abundance,and(3)disadvantages caused by laterality(unequal lateral hydrodynamic resistance when swimming,allocation of resources for the brain and receptors,and predator escape).

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections （CAUTIs） are among the most common bacterial infections associated with medical devices. In the current study, the synthesis, coating, antibiofilm properties, and biocompatibility of urinary catheters coated with Zn-doped CuO （Zn0.12Cu0.880） nanoparticles （NPs） were examined. The doped NPs were synthesized and subsequently deposited on the catheter by the sonochemical method. The coated catheters displayed high antibiofilm activity and promising biocompatibility, as indicated by low in vitro cytotoxicity, negligible associated cytokine secretion, and absence of detectable irritation. The biocompatibility and ability of the Zn-doped CuO coating to inhibit biofilm formation were also evaluated in vivo using a rabbit model. Rabbits catheterized with uncoated catheters scored positive for CAUTI by day 4 of the experiment. In contrast, rabbits catheterized with Zn-doped CuO-coated catheters did not exhibit CAUTI until day 7 or remained completely uninfected for the whole duration of the 7-day experiment. Furthermore, the in vivo biocompatibility assays and examinations supported the biosafety of Zn-doped CuO-coated catheters. Taken together, these data highlight the potential of Zn-doped CuO nanocomposite as effective antibiofilm compound.

The association between orthostatic hypertension and all-cause mortality in hospitalized elderly persons

Background Little is known about the prevalence oforthostatic hypertension （OHT） and its effect on long-term mortality in the eld- erly. We evaluated the prevalence of OHT and its effect on mortality in hospitalized elderly patients. Methods Out of 1852 patients admit- ted between 31/12/1999 and 31/12/2000 to an acute geriatric ward, 474 patients （48% males） with a mean age of 81.5 ±6.8 years were en- rolled in this study. Blood pressure （BP） was measured three times during the day in a supine and standing position. Patients with at least one increase in systolic or diastolic BP levels upon standing were diagnosed with OHT. Medical history, physical examination and laboratory parameters were retrieved from the medical records. Mortality data until 18th June 2014 were retrieved from the computerized system of the Ministry of the Interior. Results Four hundred and seven patients （86%） were diagnosed with OHT. Those without OHT had a lowerbody mass index and were more likely males, smokers, had a higher rate of Parkinson＇s disease and less congestive heart failure compared with those with OHT. Patients with OHT had a better survival rate than those without OHT （P = 0.024）. Hazard ratios （HRs） for mortality in those with OHT adjusted to age and multiple risk factors were： 0.67 [95% confidence interval （CI）： 0.51-0.87] and 0.73 （95% CI： 0.55-0.97）, respectively; a similar tendency was noticed in a sensitivity analysis by gender. Conclusion Hospitalized elderly patients with OHT had a better survival rate than those without OHT.

AIM： TO assess the safety and efficacy of antioxidant therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection.METHODS： One hundred chronic HCV infection patients failed in interferon treatment were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive combined intravenous and oral antioxidants or placebo, or oral treatment alone, Primary end points were liver enzymes, HCV-RNA levels and histology.RESULTS： Combined oral and intravenous antioxidant therapy was associated with a significant decline in ALT levels in 52% of patients who received antioxidant therapy vs 20% of patients who received placebo （P = 0.05）. Histology activity index （HAI） score at the end of treatment was reduced in 48% of patients who received antioxidant therapy vs 26% of patients who received placebo （P = 0.21）. HCV-RNA levels decreased by l-log or more in 28% of patients who received antioxidant therapy vs 12% who received placebo （P = NS）. In part 11 of the trial, oral administration of antioxidants was not associated with significant alterations in any of the end points.CONCLUSION： Antioxidant therapy has a mild beneficial effect on the inflammatory response of chronic HCV infection patients who are non-responders to interferon. Combined antiviral and antioxidant therapy may be beneficial for these patients.

Oral mixture of autologous colon-extracted proteins for the Crohn's disease: A double-blind trial

AIM: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral administration of AlequelTM, an autologous proteincontaining colon extract.a randomized,placebo-controlled,double-blind *** were orally administered with autologous protein-containing colon extract three doses of autologous study drug per week for 15 wk,for a total of45 *** were followed for safety *** was defined as a Crohn’s disease activity index(CDAI)score of less than or equal to *** patients were followed for changes in subsets of T cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorting ***:Analysis was performed on a total number of evaluable patients of 14 in the study drug group and15 in the placebo *** was well tolerated by all *** major treatment-related adverse events were reported or observed in any of the treated patients during the feeding or follow-up *** weeks 6 and 9 of the study,six of the 14(43%)evaluable subjects who received the study drug achieved a CDAI of 150 or *** contrast,five of the 15(33%)evaluable subjects in the placebo group achieved *** weeks 9 and 12,the remission rates were 50%and 33%for the drug group and placebo group,*** the drug-treated subjects who achieved remission,the effect of the drug was judged as stable in eight of the 14 subjects as measured by at least two CDAI scores indicating remission in the 15-wk treatment period.A decreased percentage of peripheral natural killer T regulatory cells(a decrease of 28%vs an increase of 16%)and an increased ratio of CD4+/CD8+T lymphocytes(an increase of 11%vs a decrease of9%)were noted in subjects with a significant clinical ***:Oral administration of the autologous colonic extract could be a safe and effective for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease.
