Screening-level exposure-based prioritization to identify potential POPs, vPvBs and planetary boundary threats among Arctic contaminants

A report that reviews Arctic contaminants that are not currently regulated as persistent organic pollutants(POPs)under international treaties was recently published by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme(AMAP).We evaluated 464 individual chemicals mentioned in the AMAP report according to hazard profiles for POPs,very persistent and very bioaccumulative(vPvB)chemicals,and two novel and distinct hazard profiles we derived from the planetary boundary threat *** two planetary boundary threat profiles assign high priority to chemicals that will be mobile and poorly reversible environmental *** persistence as a proxy for poor reversibility,we defined two exposure-based hazard profiles;airborne persistent contaminants(APCs)and waterborne persistent contaminants(WPCs)that are potential planetary boundary *** used in silico estimates of physicochemical properties and multimedia models to calculate hazard metrics for persistence,bioaccumulation and long-range transport potential,then we synthesized this information into four exposure-based hazard scores of the potential of each AMAP chemical to fit each of the POP,vPvB,APC and WPC exposure-based hazard *** an alternative to adopting a“bright line”score that represented cause for concern,we scored the AMAP chemicals by benchmarking against a reference set of 148 known and relatively well-studied contaminants and expressed their exposure-based hazard scores as percentile ranks against the scores of the reference set *** results show that scores in the four exposure-based hazard profiles provide complementary information about the potential environmental exposure-based hazards of the AMAP *** POP,vPvB,APC and WPC exposure-based hazard scores identify high priority chemicals for further study from among the AMAP contaminants.

BACKGROUND:Lumbar hernia is a rare congenital or acquired defect of the posterior abdominal wall. The acquired type is more common and occurs mainly as an incisional defect after flank surgery. Incarceration or strangulation of hernia contents is uncommon. METHOD:Segmental liver incarceration through a recurrent incisional lumbar defect was diagnosed in a 58 years old woman by magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS:The patient underwent an open repair of the com-plicated hernia. An expanded polytetraflouoroethylene(e-PTFE) mesh was fashioned as a sublay prosthesis. She had an uncomplicated postoperative course. Follow-up examinations revealed no evidence of recurrence. CONCLUSIONS:Although lumbar hernia rarely results in incarceration or strangulation,early repair is necessary because of the risks of complications and the increasing difficulty in repairment as it enlarges. Surgical repair is often difficult and challenging.

AIM: To study the long-term effects of endoscopic sphincterotomy on biliary epithelium. METHODS: This is a prospective case-control study. A total of 25 patients with a median age of 71 years (range 49-89 years) and prior endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) for benign disease formed the fi rst group. The median time from ES was 42 mo (range 8-144 mo). Another 25 patients with a median age of 76 years (range 44-94 mo) and similar characteristics who underwent current endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) and ES for benign disease formed the second group (control group). Brush cytology of the biliary tree with p53 immunocytology was performed in all patients of both groups. ERCPs and recruitment were conducted at the Endoscopic Unit of Aretaieion University Hospital and Tzaneio Hospital, Athens, from October 2006 to June 2010. RESULTS: No cases were positive or suspicious for malignancy. Epithelial atypia was higher in the first group (32% vs 8% in the second group, P = 0.034). Acute cholangitis and previous biliary operation rates were also higher in the fi rst group (acute cholangitis, 60% vs 24% in the second group, P = 0.01; previous biliary operation, 76% vs 24% in the second group, P = 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that previous ES was the main causal factor for atypia, which was not related to the time interval from the ES (P = 0.407). Two patients (8%) with atypia in the fi rst group were p53-positive. CONCLUSION: ES causes biliary epithelial atypia that represents mostly reactive/proliferative rather than premalignant changes. The role of p53 immunoreactivity in biliary atypia needs to be further studied.

Lane detection is a fundamental aspect of most current advanced driver assistance systems(ADASs). A large number of existing results focus on the study of vision-based lane detection methods due to the extensive knowledge background and the low-cost of camera devices. In this paper, previous visionbased lane detection studies are reviewed in terms of three aspects, which are lane detection algorithms, integration, and evaluation methods. Next, considering the inevitable limitations that exist in the camera-based lane detection system, the system integration methodologies for constructing more robust detection systems are reviewed and analyzed. The integration methods are further divided into three levels, namely, algorithm, system,and sensor. Algorithm level combines different lane detection algorithms while system level integrates other object detection systems to comprehensively detect lane positions. Sensor level uses multi-modal sensors to build a robust lane recognition system. In view of the complexity of evaluating the detection system, and the lack of common evaluation procedure and uniform metrics in past studies, the existing evaluation methods and metrics are analyzed and classified to propose a better evaluation of the lane detection system. Next, a comparison of representative studies is performed. Finally, a discussion on the limitations of current lane detection systems and the future developing trends toward an Artificial Society, Computational experiment-based parallel lane detection framework is proposed.

The most viable path to alleviate the Global Climate Change is the substitution of fossil fuel power plants for electricity generation with renewable energy *** substitution requires the development of very large energy storage capacity,with the inherent thermodynamic irreversibility of the storage-recovery ***,the world experiences a significant growth in the numbers of electric vehicles with large batteries.A fleet of electric vehicles is equivalent to an efficient storage capacity system to supplement the energy storage system of the electricity *** based on the hourly demand-supply data of ERCOT,a very large electricity grid,show that a fleet of electric vehicles cannot provide all the needed capacity and the remaining capacity must be met by *** though the storage capacity of the batteries is close to 1–2%of the needed storage capacity of the grid,the superior round-trip storage efficiency of batteries reduces the energy dissipation associated with the storage and recovery processes by up to 38%and the total hydrogen storage capacity by up to 50%.The study also shows that anticipated improvements in the round-trip efficiencies of batteries are almost three times more effective than improvements in hydrogen storage systems.

Local anesthetics inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in various cell types. Ropivacaine, a unique, novel tertiary amine-type anesthetic, was shown to inhibit the proliferation of several cell types including keratinocytes. We found that Ropivacaine could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in an immortalized human keratinocyte line, HaCaT, in a dose- and time-dependent manner and with the deprivation of serum. The dose-dependent induction of apoptosis by ropivacaine was demonstrated by DNA fragmentation analysis and the proteolytic cleavage of a caspase-3 substrate — poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). In addition, ropivacaine downregulated the expression of clusterin/ apoliporotein J, a protein with anti-apoptotic properties, in a dose-dependent manner, which well correlated with the induction of apoptosis of HaCaT cells. To investigate the role of clusterin/apoliporotein J in ropivacaine-induced apoptosis, HaCaT cells overexpressing clusterin/apoliporotein J were generated and compared to cells expressing the well estab- lished anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein. Ectopic overexpression of the secreted form of clusterin/apoliporotein J or Bcl-2 decreased the sensitivity of HaCaT cells to toxic effects of ropivacaine as demonstrated by DNA fragmentation, the proteolytic cleavage of PARP and by a reduction in procaspase-3 expression. Furthermore, the downregulation of endogenous clusterin/apolipoprotein J levels by ropivacaine suggested that this might be one mechanism by which ropivacaine induced cell death in HaCaT cells. In conclusion, the ability of ropivacaine to induce antiproliferative responses and to suppress the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein clusterin/apolipoprotein J, combined with previ- ously reported anti-inflammatory activity and analgesic property of the drug, suggests that ropivacaine may have poten- tial utility in the local treatment of tumors.
