＜正＞The following issues are under constant discussion.Modern Western Medicine,in only a few hundred years has made remarkable progress.However,the abusive use of medicine is not good,destroying its good reputation.Natural Cultural Medicine has existed over thousands of years,eg.Traditional Chinese Medicine over three thousand years.It still continues its miracle-like healings daily,but in being forced into a western medical model has it lost some of its effectiveness? There is a serious crisis in today’s medical and life system.JAMA states Iatrogenic Disease as the 3rd biggest killer in the hospital after heart and cancer.Other surveys such as the Nutrition Institute of America ranks it as No.1,above heart and cancer.Also,medication has lethal side-effects in the home and community.An integrated CAM approach must be able to address traditional diseases and illnesses as well as the new important issues of today’s civilization:High costs and serious side effects of drugs and medication;The co-existence of herbs and medicine;Finance and politics influencing health;Genetic engineering of food and its effects;The value of the placebo;Complementary alternative natural compassionate medicine;Accessibility of services;New veteran’s special needs;Terrorism;Environmental pollution and disaster medicine;Chemical excessiveness-human and planetary Disaster;Global Warming-caused by human pollution as seen in the inordinate numbers of natural disasters in past few years,Tsunami,Katrina,Pakistan quake,etc.We must return to nature and wholistic elements of life... to abide by concepts of:Body,Mind,Spirit,Energy,Environment/nature,and to further understand the energetic principle underlying cultural and CAM practices such as that existing in Traditional Chinese Medicine.Will the original true theories and vocabularies of TCM and other cultural practices be denied,and become “medicalized”and become deadly as western medicine is now? Forensic examination of plastic drinking straws based on their physical characteristics and manufacturing marks

This work highlights the evidential value of examining plastic drinking straws to establish linkages between multiple sources for forensic intelligence,investigative or prosecution pur-poses.Plastic drinking straws are commonly encountered in drug cases,either as inhalational paraphernalia or as packaging material.However,to the best of our knowledge,systematic studies on the evidential value of straws have not previously been carried out.In this study,over 80 packets of clear and colourless straws—most of which were visually similar—were purchased from various commercial outlets in Singapore.Some physical characteristics(viz.,polarizing patterns,thickness,circumference and mass per unit length)and the manufactur-ing marks of these straws were examined to assess their potentials for discriminating straws from different packets.Comparison of polarizing patterns yielded a discrimination of approximately 69%,while thickness,circumference,and mass per unit length measurements resulted in lower discriminations.Comparison microscopy of manufacturing marks was found to be the most discriminating among all techniques employed herein,with a discrimination of about 95%,even among straws with similar polarizing patterns.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging and the brain: A brief review

Functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) is em-ployed in many behavior analysis studies, with blood oxygen level dependent-(BOLD-) contrast imaging being the main method used to generate images. The use of BOLD-contrast imaging in f MRI has been refined over the years, for example, the inclusion of a spin echo pulse and increased magnetic strength were shown to produce better recorded images. Taking careful precautions to control variables during measurement, comparisons between different specimen groups can be illustrated by f MRI imaging using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Differences have been observed in comparisons of active and resting, developing and aging, and defective and damaged brains in various studies. However, cognitive studies using f MRI still face a number of challenges in interpretation that can only be overcome by imaging large numbers of samples. Furthermore, f MRI studies of brain cancer, lesions and other brain pathologies of both humans and animals are still to be explored.

Penetrating Ocular Trauma in a Goldfish Model after Chloramphenicol or Traditional Medicine Angong Niuhuang Pill Treatment: An Analysis of Retinal Responses after 7 Days

Purpose: While there were numerous clinical examples of ocular damage, the histopathology of retinal responses was poorly characterized, and animal model research was limited. The consequences of retinal lesions with traditional medicine treatment were mostly unknown. In this work, goldfish was employed as a model for penetrating injury of the eyes to study the ocular trauma with antibiotic and traditional medicine treatments. Materials and Methods: The penetration of the eyes was performed at 2mm above the midline of the limbus in the superior quadrant with an 18-gauge sterile needle, all the way to the retina but avoiding the lens while the animals were anaesthetized in water containing 100 mg/L ethyl 3-aminobenzoate methanesulfonate (MS-222). The animals were divided into three groups and received treatments of saline, chloramphenicol, and Angong Niuhuang pill (Angong) eyedrops twice a day respectively. Angong after seven days, the animals were sacrificed. Immunohistochemical evaluation of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), catalase, and cleaved caspase-3, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) for apoptotic cells were performed on the fish’s superior quadrants of the retinae. The whole experiment was repeated two times. Result: It was evident that both the retinae treated with chloramphenicol and Angong had fewer apoptotic cells and more proliferative cells, particularly in the cases of the Angong treatment. BDNF was in the inner nuclear layer and ganglion cell layer of all groups. In the chloramphenicol and Angong groups, some cells in the outer nuclear layer displayed BDNF. Catalase reactions confirmed equivalent findings that the treated retinae with chloramphenicol or Angong treatment had less catalase. Conclusion: Angong Niuhuang pill is a traditional medicine composite formula with antibiotic and neuroprotective effects on the brain and the eyes, and this work also pointed out its possible pharmaceutical potential.

目的了解香港中文大学医学院临床医学专业本科生的解剖学双语能力。方法问卷调查,调查对象为122名临床医学专业一年级的本科生。问卷共列出了22个英文解剖学名词和19个中文解剖学名词,要求学生进行英汉或汉英互译,并就每个名词听到过的程度进行评级。结果 1.常听到的英语名词的中文翻译为所有名词的14%;中文名词的英文翻译为8%;2.英译汉的正确率为总人数的18%;汉译英的正确率亦是18%。两者的水平大致相同;3.常听到的名词虽然较容易译对,但有不少是惯用错词,经常译错;4.中学时期的授课语言(纯中文或纯英文教学)似乎与医学生的双语能力无关;授课时如果兼用另一种语言,則学生的双语能力较好。结论香港医学生解剖学双语能力存在如下问题:1.对中文名词认识不足,英译汉或汉译英都存在困难;2.强记英文和拉丁名词,不求甚解;3.人错我错。双语能力亦是医学生面对社会、与人沟通的问题。提升双语能力对社会和学生而言都是十分重要的。
