Antibacterial Effects of Extracts of Two Types of Red Sea algae

Introduction: Intestinal bacteria are exposed many external influences, including drugs, causing the emergence of strains resistant to the effects of antibiotics. Consequently, the discovery of new antibiotics that affect resistant strains is required. Marine algae offer a source of renewable natural compounds with antimicrobial effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect some of these compounds and examine their impact on enteric bacteria. Methodology: Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter aerogenes were tested with extracts of Turbinaria triquetra and Halimeda opuntia extracted with methanol, ethanol, petroleum ether, or dimethyl formamide solvents. We measured bacterial growth inhibition, the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), and potassium leakage, and analyzed the bacterial cells with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Results: The T. triquetra extract produced with methanol strongly affected the bacteria tested. When the results for T. triquetra and H. opuntia were compared with those of omacillin, the T. triquetra and H. opuntia extracts in most solvents were more effective than the antibiotic. Differences in the bacterial growth inhibition and MICs depended on the type of alga and the solvent used. At the end of the incubation period, potassium leakage had increased by 62.98% for E. coli, 61.24% for S. typhi, 61.32% for S. dysenteriae, 64.02% for K. pneumoniae, and 63.10% for E. aerogenes when treated T. triquetra. Conclusion: Turbinaria triquetra extracted with methanol strongly affected the growth of the bacteria tested. Therefore, it is a potential source of natural antibacterial compounds.

We tested the effect of three types of soil inSaudi Arabiaon SABIC carbon steel grade X60 (SCSX60) specimens. The results showed that the environment effect of different condition was very clear, indicating that the studied soils were very corrosive SCSX60 specimens. The composition and morphology of corrosion were different in the tested soil based on moisture content and immersion period. In addition, the results showed that bacteria play an important role in the corrosion of SCSX60. The morphologies of corrosion products were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to further elucidate the complex systems found in the studied soil.

Our overall knowledge of the medicinal uses of plants suggests that natural compounds could be useful in the treatment of cutaneous fungal infections in tropical regions. Furthermore, the possibilities of treatment using plant extracts may be even broader than is already known when one considers plants that have not been extensively studied in this context, such as the regional species Phoenix dactylifera and Ziziphus spina-christi. This study compared the antimicrobial activity of Phoenix dactylifera and Ziziphus spina-christi extracts in terms of their biochemical and molecular effects on Candida albicans (ATCC CA 10231). These effects included altered levels of intracellular sterols, changes in the permeability of the cell membrane, and changes in the TEF1: QRTTEF1, CaERG1: ERG1, CdERG12: CdERG1, and ERG25: ERG25 genes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify morphological characteristics, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) analyses were conducted. In treated samples, the SEM and EDAX analyses showed cell cavities and shrinkage of the cell wall, and the number of cells was reduced to only a few abnormal cells as compared with that in the untreated samples. Yttrium was detected in the cells treated with Z. spina-christi, and high levels of osmium were detected in the cells treated with P. dactylifera. Compared with control cells, cells exposed to the concentration 150 μl/ml of Z. spina-christi extract had an average sterol concentration that was nearly 3 times higher, while the concentration was 5.5 times higher for cells treated with the 150 μl/ml of P. dactylifera extract. The ethanol extracts affected the permeability of C. albicans cell membrane. Gene sequencing showed gaps and mismatches in the ERG1, ERG12, and ERG25 genes after treatment with P. dactylifera and Z. spina-christi extracts compared with that in the controls. The overuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance among pathogenic bacteria. A new antibiotic that is effective against new and resistant bacterial strains is needed. Plants and marine organisms may offer such novel treatments. In this study, extracts of the seaweed U. lactuca, and the plant seeds N. sativa were tested against strains of Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative bacilli S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa. The results of the bacterial inhibitor showed high activity in both extracts with inhibition of S. aureus growth up to 30 mm and 20 mm and P. aeruginosa growth inhibition was up to 12 mm and 15 mm, after the treated with 100 μl U. lactuca and N. sativa extracts, respectively. The MICs and MBCs were reflected with the growth inhibitor with values of 2 μl, 8 μl and 4 μl, 8 μl for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa after treated with N. sativa respectively. Kill-time increases as concentrations of U. lactuca and N. sativa extracts increase. Moreover, extracts stored in the transparent bottle decreased in effectiveness after one month of storage with percentage of 58.85%. After three months, heating the extracts of U. lactuca and N. sativa to 90°C increased their antibacterial activity.
