A biomimetic approach is used to generate a directed transversal transportation of micron-sized particles in liquids based on the principle of cilia-type arrays in coordinated motion. Rows of flaps mimicking planar cilia are positioned off-centre along an array of cavities covered with membranes that support the flaps. These membranes are deflected from a concave to a convex shape and vice versa by pneumatic actuation applying positive and negative pressures (relative to the ambient) inside the cavities. As a result, the flap on top of the membrane tilts to the left or right within such a pressure cycle, performing a beat stroke. Since each cavity can be addressed in the device individually and in rapid succession, waves of coordinated flap motion can be run along the wall. Such metachronal waves are generated and transport of particles along the cilia surface is achieved in both symplectic and antiplectic direction. It is shown that the initial tilt of the flaps relative to the wall-normal determines the direction of transport.

English is a compulsory subject and given only one or two semesters at tertiary education in Indonesia. This subject is to help the students read and access various information to enrich their main subjects during their study and prepare for their professionals in the future. However,some studies find that these English classes are boring because the materials are not useful for the students. Based on need analysis,the non-English department students wish the lecturers to provide materials in line with their majoring *** paper discusses the characteristics of the materials developed by means of action research together with a subject lecturer and a class of civil engineering students at Politeknik Negeri Bandung(Polban),a state polytechnic in Indonesia. Two of the characteristics concerning with the thinking framework of the civil engineering students and the themes of the materials were also *** materials have been tried out for two semesters, and the results indicated that the students’ learning autonomy develops. After using the materials for four weeks(150 minutes a week),the students attempted to select types of materials that needed to be discussed in the class and those uploaded into e-learning programs so that they were able to access,prepare the materials for the next class and learn these materials outside the class.

The left para-duodenal internal hernia, whose origin is generally embryological, is a rare etiology of intestinal obstruction found mainly in young adults. We report here the case of acute intestinal obstruction by left para-duodenal internal hernia in a 36-year-old young man. It was a patient who consulted urgently for occlusive syndrome with cessation of materials and gases. Abdominal percussion noted abdominal tympanism and pre-hepatic dullness was preserved. The flow and icicle signs were negative. Palpation did not objectify hepatosplenomegaly and did not find any organomegaly either. On the other hand, she found an epigastric defense. The abdominal X-ray without preparation showed water levels that were wider than high, hail-like. We performed a median above and below umbilical laparotomy and intraoperatively, it was an internal hernia with incarceration of small loops in a voluminous left paraduodenal sac of 12 cm. They were not necrotic and quickly recolored after extrication. We resected the hernial sac and closed the hernial orifice with separate stitches with absorbable suture 0. The postoperative course was simple. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 4th postoperative day. After 18 months of hindsight, he is doing well.

Photoimmunotherapy(PIT)combines the specificity of antibodies with the cytotoxicity of light activatable photosensitizers(PS)and is a promising new cancer *** designed and synthesized,in a highly convergent manner,the silicon phthalocyanine dye WB692-CB2,which is novel for being the first light-activatable PS that can be directly conjugated via a maleimide linker to *** the present study we conjugated WB692-CB2 to a humanized antibody with engineered cysteines in the heavy chains that specifically targets the prostate-specific membrane antigen(PSMA).The resulting antibody dye conjugate revealed high affinity and specificity towards PSMA-expressing prostate cancer cells and induced cell death after irradiation with red *** cells exhibited morphological characteristics associated with *** studies revealed the generation of reactive oxygen species,triggering a cascade of intracellular events involving lipid peroxidation,caspase-1 activation,gasdermin D cleavage and membrane rupture followed by release of pro-inflammatory cellular *** first in vivo experiments,PIT with our antibody dye conjugate led to a significant reduction of tumor growth and enhanced overall survival in mice bearing subcutaneous prostate tumor *** study highlights the future potential of the new phthalocyanine dye WB692-CB2 as PS for the fluorescence-based detection and PIT of cancer,including local prostate tumor lesions,and systemic activation of anti-tumor immune responses by the induction of pyroptosis.

Human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection is a serious condition associated to severe immune dysfunction and immunodeficiency. Mechanisms involved in HIV-associated immune activation, inflammation and loss of CD4+ T cells have been extensively studied, including those concerning purinergic signaling pathways. Purinergic signaling components are involved in viral entry and replication and disease progression. Research involving the participation of purinergic signaling in HIV infection has been not only important to elucidate disease mechanisms but also to introduce new approaches to therapy. The involvement of purinergic signaling in the pathogenesis of HIV infection and its implications in the control of the HIV infection are reviewed in this paper.

This work explores ceramic additive manufacturing in combination with liquid metal infiltration for the production of degradable interpenetrating phase magnesium/hydroxyapatite(Mg/HA) composites. Material extrusion additive manufacturing was used to produce stoichiometric,and calcium deficient HA preforms with a well-controlled open pore network, allowing the customization of the topological relationship of the composite. Pure Mg and two different Mg alloys were used to infiltrate the preforms by means of an advanced liquid infiltration method inspired by spark plasma sintering, using a novel die design to avoid the structural collapse of the preform. Complete infiltration was achieved in 8 min, including the time for the Mg melting. The short processing time enabled to restrict the decomposition of HA due to the reducing capacity of liquid Mg. The pure Mg-base composites showed compressive yield strength above pure Mg in cast state. Mg alloy-based composites did not show higher strength than the bare alloys due to grain coarsening, but showed similar mechanical properties than other Mg/HA composites that have significantly higher fraction of metallic phase. The composites showed faster degradation rate under simulated body conditions than the bare metallic component due to the formation of galvanic pairs at microstructural level. Mg dissolved preferentially over HA leaving behind a scaffold after a prolonged degradation period. In turn, the fast production of soluble degradation products caused cell metabolic changes after 24 h of culture with not-diluted material extracts. The topological optimization and reduction of the degradation rate are the topics for future research.
