A Randomized Controlled Trial of Mindfulness in Recovery from Colorectal Cancer

Objective:This study examined whether a 4-week group-based mindfulness intervention would be superior in reducing psychological distress in colorectal cancer(CRC)patients compared to a psychoeducation and cognitive behavioural skills learning support active control ***:Patients with CRC were randomized via Computerised Permuted Block Randomisation to mindfulness or active control groups(2-h weekly sessions over 4 weeks).Outcomes were measured pre-intervention,and 8 weeks and 6 months *** primary outcome was psychological distress measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression *** outcomes were generic quality of life(QoL),disease specific QoL,mindfulness,and intervention credibility and ***:Sixty-eight participants were randomized to mindfulness(n=35)or active control group(n=33).Uptake of potentially eligible patients consenting was low(28.0%)and the dropout rate was 33.8%.Depression scores were reduced in both groups at week 8(P=0.020).Control participants had greater improvement in generic mental QoL scores at week 8 than mindfulness(P=0.023).In disease specific QoL,there was reduction in impotence symptom in the mindfulness group(P=0.022)and reduction in faecal incontinence in the control group(P=0.019).The embarrassment symptom had a significantly lower increase in the mindfulness group at week 8 compared to the control group(P=0.009).Both groups rated the treatments as credible and ***:Mindfulness was not superior to the active control group in terms of alleviating psychological distress but both treatments were associated with some improvements in *** was low uptake of both interventions.(Trial registration number:ACTRN12616001033437)

Waste fried oil was studied to prepare three different types of detergent such as soap,liquid soap and soap powder via saponification *** preparation conditions of soap base were optimized by orthogonal *** specific preparation processes included waste fried oil treatment,orange peel extract preparation,saponification,demoulding and *** showed that the optimal con-ditions for saponification were as follows:ratio of pure waste fried oil to coconut oil=6∶4,alkali liquor(NaOH)mass fraction 30%,saponification temperature 70℃,orange peel extract concentration 15%.The mature soap was then used to make liquid soap and soap powder by surfactant(sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate,coconut diethanol amide)addition,followed by *** prepared detergent conforms to the production standard of strong decontamination ability,possesses stable performance,is gentle to skin and non-toxic.

Decommissioning of offshore facilities involve changing risk profiles at different decommissioning *** Belief Networks(BBN)are used as part of the proposed risk assessment method to capture the multiple interactions of a decommissioning *** BBN is structured from the data learning of an accident database and a modification of the BBN nodes to incorporate human reliability and barrier performance *** analysis covers one case study of one area of decommissioning operations by extrapolating well workover data to well plugging and *** analysis from well workover data,of a 5-node BBN provided insights on two different levels of severity of an accident,the’Accident’and’Incident’level,and on its respective profiles of the initiating events and the investigation-reported human *** initial results demonstrate that the data learnt from the database can be used to structure the BBN,give insights on how human reliability pertaining to well activities can be modelled,and that the relative frequencies from the count analysis can act as initial data input for the proposed *** is also proposed that the integrated treatment of various sources of information(database and expert judgement)through a BBN model can support the risk assessment of a dynamic situation such as offshore decommissioning.

Preparation and evaluation of mixed-mode resins with tryptophan analogues as functional ligands for human serum albumin separation

Five tryptophan analogues with a hydrophobic indole ring and an amino group on each molecule were used as functional ligands of mixed-mode resins for human serum albumin(HSA) purification. Their adsorption performance was evaluated and the effects of p H and salt addition on HSA adsorption were studied. The resins prepared showed typical p H-dependent adsorption and the highest adsorption capacity and affinity were found at pH 5.0for all the resins tested. The saturated adsorption capacity was 138.02 mg·g^(-1)with the tryptaminefunctionalized resin, which significantly decreased at p H below 4.0 due to electrostatic repulsion between ligands and HSA. Moreover, the addition of Na Cl or(NH_4)_2SO_4in media reduced HSA adsorption capacity, although the two salts showed different affecting profiles. The tryptamine-functionalized resin showed the best salt-tolerant performance, and its high adsorption capacity was maintained under high salt concentrations. In addition, the five resins prepared showed good adsorption selectivity for recombinant HSA from Pichia pastoris broth. Molecular docking results between tryptamine and HSA indicated that tryptamine was favorable to bind on Site II(indole-binding site) of HSA.

The right to entrepreneurial expression over heritage signifcance:the micropolitics of an adapted cafe in a historic Chinese town

This study draws on Henri Lefebvre’s(The production of space,1992,translated by ***-Smith)concept of the spatial triad to examine the micropolitics of the production of urban and social space in a cafe in a historic tourist town in the southern Chinese city of *** a spatial and social examination of the historic town of Tangjiawan’s Wangchuan Cafe is conducted in the context of a growing consumer society and experience economy in ***‑cifcally,we found that the cafe proprietor has performed a role that is commonly associated with ofcial planners and technocrats in creating a‘cofee art living space’in a process that Lefebvre describes as a‘representation of space,’and that‘spatial practices’serve to shape the space away from the heritage signifcance of the town and towards entre‑preneurially aligned *** resultant consumerist spaces are coconstructed with and negotiated by visitors and *** conducting such an examination,we highlight and critique the ways in which dominant discourses operate in a microsite,such as that of a cafe,that has become a key cultural tourism attraction of the refurbished historic town,the means by which such discourses and visions result in real-world transformations and the ways in which visitors and tourists interpret and negotiate such a microsite.

A homologous series of Schiff base esters,4-chlorobenzylidene-4'-n-alkanoyloxyanilines,containing even number of carbons at the end groups of the molecules(C_(n-1)H_(2n-1)COO-,n=4,6,8,10,12,14,16) were *** mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy(POM).It was found that the end groups of the molecules had an effect on the mesomorphic properties.n-Butanoyloxy was found non-mesogenic,whilst n-hexanoyloxy exhibited monotropic smectic *** higher members in this homologous series were enantiotropic smectogens.

Biliary complications have always been a dreaded cause of morbidity after living donor liver *** intrinsic variations in both graft and recipient biliary anatomy remain a significant factor to the difficulty of biliary reconstruction,our institution has taken advantage of its high volume of cases to critically review and evaluate modifiable operative risk factors,in particular,our surgical *** present herein,the evolution of our reconstructive biliary technique from conventional methods to our current standard of microsurgical biliary reconstruction for both graft and recipient *** this period of transition,our center has created a classification system for biliary reconstruction that decreased the biliary complication rates from 40.0%to 10.2%.

Cap polyposis: A rare cause of rectal bleeding in children

AIM: To evaluate the clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of cap polyposis in the pediatric population. METHODS: All pediatric patients with histologically proven diagnosis of cap polyposis were identified from our endoscopy and histology database over a 12 year period from 2000-2012 at our tertiary pediatric center, KK Women's and Children's Hospital in Singapore. The case records of these patients were retrospectively reviewed. The demographics, clinical course, laboratory results, endoscopic and histopathological features, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed. The study protocol was approved by the hospital institutional review board. The histological slides were reviewed by a pediatric histopathologist to confirm the diagnosis of cap polyposis. RESULTS: Eleven patients were diagnosed with cap polyposis. The median patient age was 13 years (range 5-17 years); the sample included 7 males and 4 females. All of the patients presented with bloody stools. Seven patients (63%) had constipation, while 4 patients (36%) had diarrhea. All of the patients underwent colonoscopy and polypectomies (excluding 1 patient who refused polypectomy). The macroscopic findings were of polypoid lesions covered by fibrinopurulent exudates with normal intervening mucosa. The rectum was the most common involvement site (n = 9, 82%), followed by the rectosigmoid colon (n = 3, 18%). Five (45%) patients had fewer than 5 polyps, and 6 patients (65%) had multiple polyps. Histological examination of these polyps showed surface ulcerations with a cap of fibrin inflammatory exudate. Four (80%) patients with fewer than 5 polyps had complete resolution of symptoms following the polypectomy. One patient who did not consent to the polypectomy had resolution of symptoms after being treated with sulphasalazine. All 6 patients with multiple polyps experienced recurrence of bloody stools on follow-up (mean = 28 mo). CONCLUSION: Cap polyposis is a rare and underrecognised cause of rectal b
