A high angular resolution near-infrared image that shows the intensity of polarization for the GG Tau A binary system was obtained with the Subaru Telescope. The image shows a circumbinary disk scattering the light from the central binary. The azimuthal profile of the intensity of polarization for the circumbinary disk is roughly reproduced by a simple disk model with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function and the Rayleigh function, indicating there are small dust grains at the surface of the disk. Combined with a previous observation of the circumbinary disk, our image indicates that the gap structure in the circumbinary disk orbits counterclockwise, but material in the disk orbits clockwise. We propose that there is a shadow caused by material located between the central binary and the circumbinary disk. The separations and position angles of the stellar components of the binary in the past 20 yr are consistent with the binary orbit with a = 33.4 AU and e = 0.34.

昆虫病原线虫是一种极具潜力的生防因子，因其高效的杀虫特性而受到国际生防界的广泛关注，胰岛素作为一种蛋白质多肽，已被证实对昆虫、线虫等的生长发育、寿命都有重要调控作用。为了明确胰岛素对昆虫病原线虫的影响，本试验通过对经卡森斯氏线虫Steinernema kraussei 0657l和短尾异小杆线虫Heterorhabditis brevicaudis 0641TY侵染的大蜡螟Galleria mellonella注射不同浓度胰岛素，观测昆虫病原线虫的生活史及其对大蜡螟的致病力，明确胰岛素对昆虫病原线虫致病力、生殖力的影响。结果表明：胰岛素干预时间和干预浓度均可对卡森斯氏线虫0657l在寄主昆虫体内的生长发育产生影响，侵染当天（t）干预和高浓度（1:500）干预，会明显缩短其发育历期；侵染当天无论是高浓度还是低浓度的胰岛素干预，均会明显缩短短尾异小杆线虫0641TY的发育历期，且相比较卡森斯氏线虫0657l，胰岛素促进短尾异小杆线虫0641TY发育历期的效果更明显。在卡森斯氏线虫0657l侵染大蜡螟10 d后，注射低浓度的胰岛素，可显著提高其生殖力；在短尾异小杆线虫0641TY侵染大蜡螟1 d后，注射低浓度的胰岛素，可显著提高其生殖力。胰岛素对卡森斯氏线虫0657l致病力有影响，在24 h内高浓度胰岛素可显著缩短寄主昆虫的死亡时间，但是侵染36 h后，各处理间差异不显著；而对短尾异小杆线虫0641TY致病力无影响。综上所述，胰岛素对卡森斯氏线虫0657l和短尾异小杆线虫0641TY的发育和生殖力均有影响，且对卡森斯氏线虫致病力有影响。

Despite the initial skepticism and challenges,minimally invasive liver surgery especially laparoscopic liver resections(llR),has become a first-choice surgical treatment for various liver tumors in many specialized centers worldwide(1-3).It is a safe alternative to open surgery thanks to advantages such as reduced blood loss and complication rates,shorter hospital stay,and better quality of life(4-7).However,laparoscopy requires relatively long learning,and complex procedures are limited to high-volume expert centers(8).

Nanoscale 3D ordered polymer networks

Structures having nanoscale 3 D geometries are valuable as multifunctional materials, where multi-continuous microphases can synergistically influence mechanical, optical, transport and other properties. Such very high interface surface to volume ratio structures occur in a variety of materials including natural materials such as butter fly wings and sea urchin exoskeletons and in synthetic self-assembled structures such as surfactant/water systems and block polymers. Quantitative morphological characterization of such complex geometric structures is quite challenging. Unit cell sizes range from 10–300 nm with corresponding feature sizes on the 2–50 nm scale. Since these nanoscale network structures are bicontinuous, when one constituent is removed, the structure is still self supporting. Removal of one component produces a nanoporous material that may be in-filled with another component, or the surfaces of the nanopores can be coated with ultra-thin layers by atomic layer deposition to offer multifunctional capabilities. Due to the ability to individually tailor the properties of the network(s) and matrix,for example, to create strong dielectric or impedance contrast, such spatially periodic structures are excellent for the interference of waves(electromagnetic for photonic applications and acoustic for phononic applications) that can lead to bandgaps and hence the control of wave propagation in the material. This mini-review will focus on networks formed by bottom up self assembly of block polymers. In addition to structural issues, we emphasize the special physical properties related to bi-or tri-continuous networks.

As a discipline,comparative immunology enhances zoology and has gained wide acceptance in the biological sciences.It is an offshoot of the parent field,immunology,and is an amalgam of immunology and zoology.All animals from protozoans to humans have solved the threat of extinction by having evolved an immune-defense strategy that ensures the capacity to react against foreign,non-self microorganisms and cancers that disturb the homeostatic self.Invertebrate-type innate immune responses evolved first and they characterize the metazoans.These rapid natural responses act immediately and are often essential for the occurrence of slower,more specific,adaptive vertebratetype immune responses.As components of the innate immune system,there is an emphasis on several major steps in the evolutionary process:(i)recognition;(ii)the phagocytic cell;and(iii)the natural killer cell.When vertebrates evolved,beginning with fish,thymus-controlled T cells first appeared,as did bone marrow-derived B cells(first found in amphibians with long bones).These were the precursors of the plasma cells that synthesize and secrete antibodies.Confirming the concept of self/non-self,invertebrates possess natural,non-adaptive,innate,non-clonal,non-anticipatory immune responses,whereas vertebrates possess adaptive,acquired,clonal,and anticipatory responses.This symposium concerns:(i)aspects of the immune spectrum in representative groups;(ii)specific findings(in particular models;e.***.earthworms);(iii)clues as to the possible biomedical application of relevant molecules derived from animals,notably invertebrates;and(iv)some views on the more practical applications of understanding immune systems of invertebrates and ectotherms,and their possible role in survival.

The basic clinical diagnostic framework synergized

Objective To develop a diagnostic framework that would help defining clinical problems by the expanded understanding with traditional Chinese medicine (C Med) and western medicine (W Med).Methods The basic attributes of diagnosis and the use of diagnostic techniques of W Med and C Med are reviewed. Some of the various diagnostic labels and their meanings are also preliminarily reviewed. A consolidatory approach is made to synergize the usefulness of the two disciplines based on the principles of the two schools.Conclusions The application and use of the framework are discussed and propositions are made. The synergized diagnostic platform represents a starting effort to form a unified basis to exchange clinical diagnosis between W Med and C Med. Such framework may facilitate looking for new treatment modalities and results can be compared across different centres.

A short note on how tied fights affect cortisol levels

Previous work exploring the interrelationships between sex steroids(e.***.androgens,testosterones and 11-ketotestosterones)and social behavior in teleosts suggest that mirror-elicited aggression in cichlid fish may not trigger a hormonal response.Using the Mozambique tilapia(Oreochromis mossambicus)to analyze immune responses as a result of social stress,we measured levels of cortisol and melatonin using Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay(ElISA)assays.In this work,we demonstrated that cortisol concentrations are significantly lower yet the levels of melatonin remain unchanged in tilapia that are fighting their mirror image.Our results suggested that in tied fights,certain hormone levels remain unchanged(e.***.androgens)due to the lack of melatonin induction.

Hypothetical mode of action of earthworm extract with hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties

The hepatoprotective potential of earthworm extract (EE) (lampito mauritii, Kinberg) was evaluated against paracetamol-induced liver injury in Wistar albino rat, in comparison with silymarin, the standard hepatoprotective drug. We observed a reduction in liver antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) and in serum total protein, and an increase in serum alkaline phosphatase (AlP), serum aspertate aminotranferase (AST), serum alanine aminotranferase (AlT), bilirubin and liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) due to liver injury in the paracetamol-administered rats (2 g/kg). On the contrary, increased activities of liver GSH, SOD, GPx, CAT and serum total protein level, and decrease in the contents of serum AlP, AST, AlT, bilirubin and liver TBARS were observed in rats administered with different doses of EE (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg), which are similar to the activities of hepato-protective drug silymarin (150 mg/kg). The mode of action of EE as evidenced by the above parameters may suggest that EE, on the one hand, prevents the formation of the reactive oxygen groups, or scavenges these groups, thereby preventing the damage on the hepatic cells, and, on the other hand, modulates the genes responsible for synthesis of antioxidant enzymes such as GPx, CAT and SOD in liver tissue and decreases the serum enzymatic activities such as AlP, AST and AlT.
