In situ observation of synthesized nanoparticles in ultra-dilute aerosols via X-ray scattering

In-air epitaxy of nanostructures(Aerotaxy)has recently emerged as a viable route for fast,large-scale *** this study,we use small-a ngle X-ray scatteri ng to perform direct in-flight characterizati ons of the first step of this process,i.e.,the en gineered formatio n of Au and Pt aerosol nan oparticles by spark gen erati on in a flow of N2 *** represe nts a particular challe nge for characterizati on because the particle density can be extremely low in con trolled *** particles produced are exami ned duri ng producti on at operatio nal pressures close to atmospheric conditions and exhibit a log no rmal size distributi on ranging from *** Au and Pt particle productio n and detection are *** observe and characterize the nanoparticles at different stages of synthesis and extract the corresponding domi nant physical properties,in cludi ng the average particle diameter and sphericity,as in flue need by particle sintering and the prese nee of *** observe highly sorted and sin tered spherical Au nano particles at ultra-dilute concen tratio ns(<5×10^5 particles/cm^3)corresponding to a volume fraction below 3×10^-10,which is orders of magnitude below that of previously measured *** independently confirm an average particle radius of 25 nm via Guinier and Kratky plot *** study indicates that with high-intensity synchrotron beams and careful con sideratio n of backgro und removal,size and shape info rmati on can be obtai ned for extremely low particle concentrations with industrially relevant narrow size distributions.

The interaction between a shaped charge jet and a single moving plate

Irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms in treated microscopic colitis patients compared with controls:a cross-sectional study

Background:The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)-like symptoms is high in untreated patients with microscopic colitis(MC),but there is uncertainty of the prevalence of IBS-like symptoms in treated *** assessed the degree of IBS-like symptoms in patients with MC in comparison to control subjects,and investigated the association between IBS-like symptoms and faecal calprotectin(FC)in MC ***:Patients with an established MC diagnosis(n=57)were compared to sex-and age-matched controls(n=138)for scores in the GSRS-IBS(Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale for Irritable Bowel Syndrome)and HADS(Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale).In MC patients,an FC level was simultaneously ***:The median interval from MC diagnoses to the time the subjects participated in the study was 5.5 years(25th-75th percentiles;4.5-9.5 years).The total GSRS-IBS score,subscores for abdominal pain,bloating,and diarrhoea were significantly higher in MC patients compared to controls(all P<0.001).There was a significant correlation between FC levels and reported bowel frequency(P=0.023),but there was no correlation between FC levels and GSRS-IBS *** with MC had significantly higher scores on anxiety(HADS-A)(P<0.001)and used more selective serotonin-reuptake-inhibitor drugs(P=0.016)than the control ***,only the control subjects(not the patients with MC)showed significant correlations between GSRS-IBS scores and HADS ***:Patients with MC reported more IBS-like symptoms and anxiety than control subjects but neither FC levels nor symptoms of affectivity were significantly correlated with IBS-like symptoms.

Effects of porosity,dry unit weight,cement content and void/cement ratio on unconfined compressive strength of roof tile waste-silty soil mixtures

One of the conventional ways to improve the mechanical behavior of soils is to mix them with cementing agents such as cement, lime and fly ash. Recently, introduction to alternative materials or sub-products that can be adopted to improve the soil strength is of paramount importance. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effects of porosity(h), dry unit weight(gd) of molding, cement content(C)and porosity/volumetric cement content ratio(h/Civ) or void/cement ratio on the unconfined compressive strength(quor UCS) of silty soileroof tile waste(RT) mixtures. Soil samples are molded into four different dry unit weights(i.e. 13 kN/m^3, 13.67 kN/m^3, 14.33 kN/m^3 and 15 kN/m^3) using 3%, 6% and 9%cement and 5%, 15% and 30% RT. The results show that with the addition of cement, the strength of the RT esoil mixtures increases in a linear manner. On the other hand, the addition of RT decreases quof the samples at a constant percentage of cement, and the decrease in porosity can increase qu. A dosage equation is derived from the experimental data using the porosity/volumetric cement content ratio(h/C_(iv)) where the control variables are the moisture content, crushed tile content, cement content and porosity.

Optimizing the evolution of strength for lime-stabilized rammed soil

In the present study,unconfined compressive strength(qu)values of two lime-treated soils(soil 1 and 2)with curing times of 28 d,90 d and 360 d were *** influence of void/lime ratio was represented by the porosity/volumetric lime content ratio(η/Liv)as the main parameter.η/Liv represents the volume of void influenced by compaction effort and lime *** evolution of qu was analyzed for each soil using the coefficient of determination as the optimization *** at providing adjustments to the mechanical resistance values,the η/Liv parameter was modified to η/LivC using the adjustment exponent C(to make qu-η/Liv variation rates compatible).The results show that with the decrease of η/*** increases potentially and the optimized values of C were *** mechanical resistance data show similar trends between qu and η/LivC for the studied silty soil-ground lime mixtures,which were cured at ambient temperature(23±2)℃ with different curing times of 28-360 ***,optimized equations were presented using the normalized strengths and the proposed optimization model,which show 6% error and 95% acceptability on average.

Dear Editor Professor Youyou Tu, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for ＂her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria＂（https：//***/nobel_ prizes/medicine/laureates/2015/***）. This therapy is based on the sesquiterpenoid artemisinin, isolated from Artemisia annua. Artemisinin and its derivatives, administered in the form of artemisinin-based combination therapies （ACTs）, are currently the best treatment for malaria.

Aims Plants use a variety of hydraulic strategies to adapt to seasonal drought that differ by species and environmental *** early-diverging Magnoliaceae family includes two closely related genera with contrasting leaf habits,Yulania(deciduous)and Michelia(evergreen),which naturally inhabit temperate and tropi-cal regions,***,we evaluate the hydraulic strategy of species from both genera that have been ex situ conserved in a subtropical region to determine how they respond to the novel cool-dry season climatic *** We measured ecophysiological traits in five Michelia and five Yulania species conserved in the South China Botanical Garden in both wet and dry season conditions and monitored the whole-year sap flow for four of these *** Findings We found that Magnoliaceae species that have been ex situ con-served in a subtropical climate did not suffer from excessive water stress due to the mild drought conditions of the dry season and the ecophysiological adjustments the species made to avoid this stress,which differed by leaf ***,deciduous species com-pletely shed their leaves during the dry season,while evergreen species decreased their turgor loss points,dry mass based photo-synthetic rates,stomatal conductance and specific leaf areas(SLAs)compared to wet season *** comparing the two dis-tinct leaf habits during the wet season,the leathery-leaved evergreen species had higher leaf hydraulic conductance and leaf to sapwood area ratios than the papery-leaved deciduous species,while the deciduous species had greater hydraulic conductivity calculated on both a stem and leaf area basis,dry mass based photosynthetic rates,leaf nutrients,SLAs and stomatal sizes than the evergreen ***,species from both genera maintained similar sap flow in the wet *** photosynthetically active radia-tion and vapour pressure deficit affected the diurnal patterns of sap flow in the wet season,

Morphological alterations and redox changes associated with hepatic warm ischemia-reperfusion injury

AIM To study the effects of warm ischemia-reperfusion(I/R) injury on hepatic morphology at the ultrastructural level and to analyze the expression of the thioredoxin(TRX)and glutaredoxin(GRX) *** Eleven patients undergoing liver resection were subjected to portal triad clamping(PTC). Liver biopsies were collected at three time points; first prior to PTC(baseline), 20 min after PTC(post-ischemia) and 20 min after reperfusion(post-reperfusion). Electron microscopy and morphometry were used to study and quantify ultrastructural changes, respectively. Additionally, gene expression analysis of TRX and GRX isoforms was performed by quantitative PCR. For further validation of redox protein status, immunogold staining was performed for the isoforms GRX1 and *** Post-ischemia, a significant loss of the liver sinusoidal endothelial cell(LSEC) lining was observed(P = 0.0003) accompanied by a decrease of hepatocyte microvilli in the space of Disse. Hepatocellular morphology was well preserved apart from the appearance of crystalline mitochondrial inclusions in 7 out of 11 patients. Postreperfusion biopsies had similar features as post-ischemia with the exception of signs of a reactivation of the LSECs. No changes in the expression of redox-regulatory genes could be observed at mR NA level of the isoforms of the TRX family but immunoelectron microscopy indicated a redistribution of TRX1 within the *** At the ultrastructural level, the major impact of hepatic warm I/R injury after PTC was borne by the LSECs with detachment and reactivation at ischemia and reperfusion, respectively. Hepatocytes morphology were well preserved. Crystalline inclusions in mitochondria were observed in the hepatocyte after ischemia.
