A Remote Sensing Characterization of the Effects of Anastrepha striata ＆ Anastrepha ludens on Guava Cultures in Mexico

Detection of the presence of Anastrepha striata and Anastrepha ludens in guava cultures is presently done in Mexico by actually catching the flies in strategically located traps. The objective of this study is to show that it is possible to locate areas with the presence or absence of flies by remote sensing means, thereby simplifying the traditional way of detection of these plagues. In the field, groups of traps were selected where flies had been captured, as well as areas in which there was no capture in the traps. The radiometric signatures of whole trees and leaves were obtained, showing measurable differences between those specimens affected by the plague and those unaffected. Next we selected a SPOT5 image of 2007 corresponding to the study area in Calvillo, State of Aguascalientes, in Mexico, one of the major areas of guava cultures in the country. A supervised classification of the image allowed for the location of guava cultures in it. The guava culture areas obtained from this classification were validated comparing them to available maps of the cultured areas. Spectral signatures for the classes were derived from the image data. The separability of pairs of classes was also evaluated in order to maximize it. The IR/R （infrared to red ratio） ratio of the image bands was evaluated in 80 × 80 pixels around the locations of five traps where flies had been captured, and around five locations where the traps had not captured flies. Only the pixels where guava cultures were present were included in the analysis, other types of vegetation and soil coverage were rejected. We found that the index distributions with flies captured and those without flies captured cluster in two well-separated groups. We note that plotting the whole distribution of pixels around a trap yields a diagnostic view of the area, and individual index values do not provide such a view, since values with the flies＇ presence and without these overlap to some extent. TTie Ultisols in the Rana de Canamero area in Southwest Spain showed aluminum(Al)phytotoxicity,and the clearance of natural vegetation and decades of intensive conventional agriculture caused the deplation of soil organic matter(SOM).Therefore,we studied the long-term effects of no tillage and liming using sugar beet foam(SF)and red gypsum(RG),alone or in combination,on the restoration of Ultisols affected by acidification,Al phytotoxicity,and SOM *** measured the main soil chemical properties,soil microbial biomass,soil enzyme activities involved in carbon,nitrogen,phosphorus,and sulfur mineralization,and the emission of volatile organic compounds(VOCs).The results indicated that liming effectively neutralized the soil acidity in the long term and,in combination with no tillage,significantly increased soil microbial biomass and enzyme ***-three VOCs were detected using the proton transfer reaction-time of flight(PTR-ToF)technique,and both liming and tillage changed the VOC emission *** greatest difference in VOC emission pattern was observed between no-tilled un-amended soils and tilled lime-amended soils,suggesting the activation of different metabolic pathways within the microbial communities of soils under different *** in VOC emission patterns could be attributed to the decomposition of carbohydrates,which were also sustained by the higher enzyme activities in the lime-amended soils.

Evidence for maternal transmission of a putative endosymbiont in the digestive gland of Pomacea canaliculata(Architaenioglossa,Ampullariidae)

The digestive gland of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata lodges two types of pigmented corpuscles(identified as C and K corpuscles)which has been proposed as endosymbiont/*** corpuscular types are always present in the digestive gland of adult snails,they are released into the tubuloacinar lumen and are later expelled in the *** their part,hatchlings lack any C or K corpuscles in the digestive gland as well as in their feces,whereas C corpuscles appear in both the gland and feces within one week after ***,it is possible that the detritivorous hatchlings acquire the putative C-endosymbiont from feces in the sediments where they live,***‘lateral’or‘horizontal’*** possibility was put to test in an experiment in which we prevented any lateral transmission,by a 7-days aseptic culture,with no food,of aseptically obtained *** the end of the experiment,we observed that most juveniles had survived the culture period,and hence the digestive glands and feces of survivors were studied by light microscopy of resin embedded,toluidine blue-stained *** studied glands and fecal samples showed C *** is concluded that lateral transmission of the endosymbiont,if any,is not indispensable for the acquisition of the endosymbiont by hatchlings.

Outreach channels for polar science:an expedition to Kerguelen Islands as a case study

Polar science outreach is strongly needed, because besides promoting the utility of polar studies for society as a whole, it can generate public demand for new projects and expeditions. The dissemination of polar discoveries should be reinforced in countries without polar territories and for which polar science might not be a priority. In this pilot study （N =182 participants） we have contrasted the opinions of polar scientists （French, Belgian, British, Canadian, Australian, German, Italian and Spanish researchers） with those of a potentially interested public （graduate students of pedagogy and biology）, in order to assess if the communication channels employed by polar researchers to make their results public align with those used by non-polar experts for learning about polar discoveries. The results revealed that scientific publications and presentations were considered a priority by the researchers, and these scientific communication channels were preferentially employed. Only a minority of researchers thought that non-scientific publications might be a good communication resource. In contrast, both groups of students, which considered polar research important but not a top priority, employed the Internet as their main channel for information about polar discoveries. Students assessed the use of polar discoveries as positive for educational purposes at both Primary and Secondary levels. The information presently received by students was perceived as being too generalist and the main suggestions to improve outreach in this field, in addition to the use of Internet, were more rapid dissemination of new discoveries.

Chaotic dynamics and coexistence in a three species interaction model

This work deals with a three-dimensional system, which describes a food web model consisting of a prey, a specialist predator and a top predator which is generalist as it consumes the other two species. Using tools of dynamical systems we prove that the trajectories of system are bounded and that open subsets of parameters exist, such that the system in the first octant has at most two singularities. For an open subset of the parameters space, the system is shown to have an invariant compact set and this is a topologically transitive attractor set. Finally, we find another open set in the parameters space, such that the system has two limit cycles each contained in different invariant planes. The work is completed with a numeric simulation showing the attractor is a strange attractor.

On Building Practical Biocomputers for Real-world Applications： Receptacles for Culturing Slime Mould Memristors and Component Standardisation

Our application of bionic engineering is novel： we are interested in developing hybrid hardware-wetware systems for music. This paper introduces receptacles for culturing Physarum polycephalum-based memristors that are highly accessible to the creative practitioner. The myxomycete Physarum polycephalum is an amorphous unicellular organism that has been found to exhibit memristive properties. Such a discovery has potential to allow us to move towards engineering electrical systems that encompass Physarum polycephalum components. To realise this potential, it is necessary to address some of the constraints associated with harnessing living biological entities in systems for real-time application. Within the paper, we present 3D printed receptacles designed to standardise both the production of components and memristive observations. Subsequent testing showed a significant decrease in growth time, increased lifespan, and superior similarity in component-to-component responses. The results indicate that our receptacle design may provide means of implementing hybrid electrical systems for music technology.

IMPROVING SOLVER PERFORMANCE THROUGH REDUNDANCY

It is well known that hierarchies of mathematical programming formulatlons with different numbers of variables and constraints have a considerable impact regarding the quality of solutions obtained once these formulations are fed to a commercial solver. In addition, even if dimensions are kept the same, changes in formulations may largely influence solvability and quality of results. This becomes evident especially if redundant constraints are used. We propose a related framework for information collection based on these constraints. We exemplify by means of a well-known combinatorial optimization problem from the knapsack problem family, i.e., the multidimensional multiple-choice knapsack problem （MMKP）. This incorporates a relationship of the MMKP to some generalized set partitioning problems. Moreover, we investigate an application in maritime shipping and logistics by means of the dynamic berth allocation problem （DBAP）, where optimal solutions are reached from the root node within the solver.
