Provenance and drainage system of the Early Cretaceous volcanic detritus in the Himalaya as constrained by detrital zircon geochronology

The age range of the major intra-plate volcanic event that affected the northern Indian margin in the Early Cretaceous is here defined precisely by detrital zircon geochronology. U-Pb ages of Early Cretaceous detrital zircons found in the Cretaceous to the Paleocene sandstones cluster mainly between 142 Ma and 123 Ma in the northern Tethys Himalayan unit, and between 140 Ma and 116 Ma in the southern Tethys Himalayan unit. The youngest and oldest detrital zircons within this group indicate that volcanism in the source areas started in the latest Jurassic and ended by the early Albian. stratigraphic data indicate that volcaniclastic sedimentation began significantly earlier in southern Tibet （Tithonian） than in Nepal （Valangin- ian）, and considerably later in spiti and Zanskar （Aptian/AIbian） to the west. This apparent westward migration of magmatism was explained with progressive westward propagation of extensional/transtensional tectonic activity and development of fractures cutting deeply across the Indian continental margin crust. However, detrital zircon geochronology provides no indication of heterochroneity in magmatic activity in the source areas from east to west, and thus lends little support to such a scenario. Westward migration of volcaniclastic sedimentation may thus reflect instead the westward progradation of major drainage systems supplying volcanic detritus sourced from the same volcanic centers in the east. Development of multiple radial drainage away from the domal surface uplift associated with magmatic upwelling, as observed for most large igneous provinces around the world, may also explain why U-Pb ages of detrital zircons tend to cluster around 133-132 Ma （the age of the Cornel igneous province） in Tethys Himalayan units, but around 118-117 Ma （the age of the Rajmahal igneous province） in Lesser Himalayan units.

This paper introduces a novel application of bionic engineering： a bionic musical instrument using Physarum polycephalum. Physarum polycephalum is a huge single cell with thousands of nuclei, which behaves like a giant amoeba. During its foraging behavior this plasmodium produces electrical activity corresponding to different physiological states. We developed a method to render sounds from such electrical activity and thus represent spatio-temporal behavior of slime mould in a form apprehended auditorily. The electrical activity is captured by various electrodes placed on a Petri dish containing the cultured slime mold. sounds are synthesized by a bank of parallel sinusoidal oscillators connected to the electrodes. Each electrode is responsible for one partial of the spectrum of the resulting sound. The behavior of the slime mould can be controlled to produce different timbres.

The dissimilar metal weld is demanding as well as the similar weld, however, dissimilar weld is more complex than similar weld due to the necessity of being applied in zones where a requirement is to improve some properties. In this work the main purpose is to know the mechanical behavior of a dissimilar weld between HsLA steel and superduplex stainless steel (sDss) to establish if the joint is feasible or not. The alloys were welded with GTAW process using a 60-deg and 90-deg single-V groove test specimens in order to observe the effect of the weld pass. The filler metal was chosen with the aid of schaeffler diagram. It was found that the ER 25.10.4L filler metal provided the best equilibrium between ferrite and austenite phase in the superduplex stainless steel final microstructure and a band of martensite in the HsLA steel final microstructure. The dissimilar joint presented acceptable mechanical properties which are superior to the HsLA in the as-received condition, but lower than the sDss in the as-received condition, proving that the filler metal was the adequate.

Morphological and biochemical effects of weekend alcohol consumption in rats: Role of concentration and gender

AIM To examine the association between weekend alcohol consumption and the biochemical and histological alterations at two different concentrations of alcohol in both genders in *** Wistar rats weighing 170-200 g were divided into groups as follows:(1) Control groups; and(2) weekend alcohol-consumption group: 2 d/weekly per 12 wk, at two different concentrations:(1) Group of males or females with a consumption of a solution of alcohol at 40%; and(2) group of males or females with a consumption of a solution of alcohol at 5%. At the end of the experiment, serum and liver samples were obtained. The following enzymes and metabolites were determined in serum: Alanine Aminotransferase(ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase(AsT), Lactate Dehydrogenase, and Gamma-Glutamyltransferase, and glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, bilirubin, and albumin. Liver samples from each group were employed to analyze morphological abnormalities by light *** In all of the weekend alcohol-consumption groups, AsT activity presented a significant, 10-fold rise. Regarding ALT activity, the groups with weekend alcohol consumption presented a significant increase that was six times greater. Bilirubin levels increased significantly in both groups of females. We observed a significant increase in the parameters of fatty change and inflammation due to weekend alcohol consumption. Only the group of females that consumed alcohol at 40% presented slight hepatocel ular disorganization CONCLUsION The results obtained herein provide solid evidence that weekend alcohol consumption gives rise to liver damage, demonstrated by biochemical and histological alterations, first manifested acutely, and prolonged weekend alcohol consumption can cause greater, irreversible damage.

Effect of malathion on the male reproductive organs of earthworms, Eisenia foetida

Aim: To observe the cytotoxic effect of the organophosphate insecticide malathion in the reproductive tissues of the earthworms, Eisenia foetida. Methods: Worms were nourished in soil treated with malathion at single sub-lethal doses of 0, 80, 150, 300 and 600 mg-kg^(-1) soil. (LD_(50) = 880 mg kg^(-1) soil) and evaluated on days 1, 5, 15 and 30 after exposure. The body weights were recorded and male reproductive organs evaluated. Results: Malathion-treated animals showed a significant reduction in body weight in a dose-dependent manner. Malathion treatment modified the disposition of spermatozoa in the basal epithelium of the spermatheca. The Br-deoxyuridine test showed a significant rise in cells in phase s on days 5 and 15. Also, a higher percentage of spermatogonia with fragmented DNA were observed by means of the TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) technique in the spermatheca of treated animals. Conclusion: Treatment with malathion decreased the body weight and the spermatic viability in spermatheca, altering the cell proliferation and modifying the DNA structure of spermatogonia.

A valuable number of works has been published about Hurwitz and schur polynomials in order to known better their properties. For example it is known that the sets of Hurwitz and schur polynomials are open and no convex sets. Besides, the set of monic schur polynomials is contractible. Now we study this set using ideas from differential topology, and we prove that the space of schur complex polynomials with positive leading coefficient, and the space of Hurwitz complex polynomials which leading coefficient having positive real part, have structure of trivial vector bundle, and each space of （schur complex and real, Hurwitz complex） polynomials has a differential structure diffeomorphic to some known spaces.
