The primary aim of this study was to develop a model of a socially inclusive climate risk insurance(CRI) mechanism based on the differential risk transfer approach. This study focused on the department of La Guajira, Colombia, as a case *** Guajira is the department in Colombia that, due to its critical disaster risk conditions, presents the adequate configuration for implementing a climate risk transfer mechanism. The article starts by analyzing risk conditions by using secondary data. Based on fieldwork, this research explored the perspectives of the most vulnerable sectors in La Guajira department on the socioeconomic impacts and needs they experience regarding climate-related hazards, their adaptive measures for risk reduction, and their willingness to adopt CRI. This represents the fundamental input for the formulation of the CRI model. Consequently, this research proposed an operational structure as input for future implementations of the model. The results indicate that national and local disaster risk management public policies align with the sectors' needs and priorities. Strengthening sectoral associations can enhance representation in CRI projects. In-kind indemnization is preferred for women entrepreneurs and the indigenous community. The CRI model includes a risk pool through the family compensation fund of La Guajira as a sectoral agglomerator, with contingent credit and traditional/parametric insurance. The methodology developed in this study can be applied in different contexts worldwide as a guidance for informing national and international climate risk finance initiatives.

Chaotic dynamics and coexistence in a three species interaction model

This work deals with a three-dimensional system, which describes a food web model consisting of a prey, a specialist predator and a top predator which is generalist as it consumes the other two species. Using tools of dynamical systems we prove that the trajectories of system are bounded and that open subsets of parameters exist, such that the system in the first octant has at most two singularities. For an open subset of the parameters space, the system is shown to have an invariant compact set and this is a topologically transitive attractor set. Finally, we find another open set in the parameters space, such that the system has two limit cycles each contained in different invariant planes. The work is completed with a numeric simulation showing the attractor is a strange attractor.

Phenolic compounds of green tea: Health benefits and technological application in food

Green tea has been an important beverage for humans since ancient times, widely consumed and considered to have health benefits by traditional medicine in Asian countries. Green tea phenolic compounds are predominately composed of catechin derivatives, although other compounds such as flavonols and phenolic acids are also present in lower proportion. The bioactivity exerted by these compounds has been associated with reduced risk of severe illnesses such as cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Particularly, epigallocatechin gallate has been implicated in alteration mechanisms with protective effect in these diseases as indicated by several studies about the effect of green tea consumption and mechanistic explanation through in vitro and in vivo experiments. The biological activity of green tea phenolic compounds also promotes a protective effect by antioxidant mechanisms in biological and food systems, preventing the oxidative damage by acting over either precursors or reactive species. Extraction of phenolic compounds influences the antioxidant activity and promotes adequate separation from green tea leaves to enhance the yield and/or antioxidant activity. Application of green tea phenolic compounds is of great interest because the antioxidant status of the products is enhanced and provides the product with additional antioxidant activity or reduces the undesirable changes of oxidative reactions while processing or storing *** this scenario, meat and meat products are greatly influenced by oxidative deterioration and microbial spoilage, leading to reduced shelf life. Green tea extracts rich in phenolic compounds have been applied to increase shelf life with comparable effect to synthetic compounds, commonly used by food industry. Green tea has great importance in general health in technological application, however more studies are necessary to elucidate the impact in pathways related to other diseases and food applications.

Influence of peanut skin extract on shelf-life of sheep patties

Objective: To evaluate the phenolic profile and antioxidant activity in vitro of peanut skin extract(PSE) and effect of PSE on characteristics of sheep patties during ***: PSE phenolic profile was evaluated in LC–MS analysis and by total phenolic content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing/antioxidant power. Patties elaborated with sheep meat were packaged in modified atmosphere and storage at(2 ± 1)C. The analyses were performed every 5 days for 20 days on microbial counts, physico-chemical properties, lipid oxidation, protein stability and sensory ***: The major group of phenolic compounds in PSE was the proanthocyanidins followed by other flavonoids, which are related to potential phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The addition of PSE and butyl hydroxytoluene(BHT) reduced the microbial counts during the storage time, caused reduction on the loss of redness and sensory properties over time. The lipid and protein oxidation in sheep patties was effectively inhibited by PSE and ***: The present results showed the potential application of PSE as a natural alternative to replace synthetic antioxidants(BHT) for increasing the quality and extending the shelf-life of sheep patties.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Submerged depth on the Horizontal Plate Wave Energy Converter

The growing search for clean and renewable energy sources has given rise to the studies of exploring sea wave energy. This paper is concerned with the numerical evaluation of the main operational principle of a submerged plate employed for the conversion of wave energy into electrical one. The numerical model used to solve the conservation equations of mass, momentum and transport of volume fraction is based on the finite volume method （FVM）. In order to tackle with the flow of mixture of air-water and its interaction with the device, the multiphase model volume of fluid （VOF） is employed. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of a numerical model for improvement of the knowledge about the submerged plate wave energy converter, as well as the investigation of the effect of the distance from the plate to the bottom of the sea （HP） on the performance of the converter. The simulations for several distances of the plate from the seabed show that the optimal efficiency is 64%, which is obtained for HP=0.53 m （88% of the depth）. This efficiency is 17% larger than that found in the worst case （HP=0.46 m, 77% of the depth）.

A university is a higher academic institution with a mission to educate individuals in order to help nations reach their developmental goals. It implies teaching innovative disciplines through the most advanced scientific and pedagogical methods, in harmony with recent international standards and national needs. Some of these innovative disciplines turn out to be a valuable driving-force of the transformation in a country. An example of such transforming disciplines is the PK （pharmacokinetics） in Cuba, considered by many as exclusive of developed countries, it shows significant contributions to the current success of the local biopharmaceutical industry, and particularly to the scientific achievements of several biotechnological centers. Noteworthily, the academic activities and scientific work performed at the UH （University of Havana） and other colleges across the Island are closely related to this success. While passing through the different stages of transformation at academic institutions in the country, we discuss herein the most significant milestones in the history of the Pharmacokinetics in Cuba.

Vertical Loads Effects Applied on the Pavement Considering the Variation on Tire Pressure

The main objective of this paper is to analyse the vertical loads effects applied on the pavement, considering the variation of tire pressure, from a truck＇s front suspension. For the measurements, a durability test track located in Brazil has been used. The tire pressure was increased by l0 psi from 90 psi to 130 psi with a constant load of 6 t on the front suspension, the maximum allowed load for front axle according to Brazilian legislation. By applying relative damage concept, it is possible to conclude that the variation on the tire pressure will not affect significantly the load applied on the pavement. However, it is recommended to repeat the same methodology in order to analyse the influence on the variation of the other quarter car model variants.

Low prevalence of germline hMSH6 mutations in colorectal cancer families from Spain

AIM: To investigate the prevalence and penetrance of hMSH6 mutations in Spanish HNPCC families that was negative for mutation in hMLH1 or ***: We used PCR-based DGGE assay and direct Sequencing to screen for hMSH6 gene in 91 HNPCC ***: we have identified 10 families with germ-line mutations in the DNA sequence. These mutations included two intronic variation, three missense mutation, one nonsense mutation, and four silent mutations. Among the 10 germ-line mutations identified in the Spanish cohort,8 were novel, perhaps, suggesting different mutational spectra in the Spanish population. detailed pedigrees were constructed for the three families with a possible pathogenic hMSH6 mutation. The two silent mutations H388H and L758L, detected in a person affected of colorectal cancer at age 29, produce loss of the wild-type allele in the tumor sample. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that expression of MSH6 protein was lost only in the tumors from the carriers of V878A and Q263X ***: Altogether, our results indicate that disease-causing germ-line mutations of hMSH6 are very less frequent in Spanish HNPCC families.

Epidemiological characteristics of live births with esophageal atresia in Sao Paulo State,Brazil,from 2005 to 2018

Background The estimated prevalence of esophageal atresia(EA)is 1 in 2500–4500 live births(LBs).Researchers have already identified risk factors,but the mechanisms are still *** aim of this study is to identify EA prevalence trends and its risk factors in the São Paulo State(SPS)population *** We conducted a population-based study using all EA cases identified by the Live Births Information System across 14 years(2005–2018)to estimate EA prevalence trends in recent years,stratified by maternal age and SPS geographical *** calculated the prevalence trends,regression coefficient(β),annual percent change(APC),and 95%confidence interval(CI).Results We found 820 EA cases among 8,536,101 LBs with a prevalence of 1.0/10,000 LBs in SPS,*** was no significant difference in distribution by *** all the cases,the majority(65%)were Caucasian;51.8%were born at term;43%had weight of≥2500 g;95.4%were singleton;and 73.4%of births were by cesarean *** 2005 to 2018,there was an increasing trend of EA prevalence(APC=6.5%)with the highest APC of 12.2%.The highest EA prevalence rate(1.7/10,000 LB)was found in the group with maternal age of≥35 *** significant seasonal variation was found based on the conception month(p=0.061).Conclusions EA had an increasing prevalence trend in SPS,Brazil,in recent years,with the highest prevalence rate in the group with maternal age of≥35 *** seasonality was *** population-based study is the first to summarize the current epidemiology of EA in SPS LB.
