Aims Natural vegetation plays an important role in global carbon cycling and ***,the Cerrado(Brazilian savannah)is considered a carbon sink because of its intrinsic *** aim was to evaluate how the aboveground biomass and biodiversity relationship change between three Cerrado remnants with different protection status:a‘control area’(Legal Reserve area),a protected area(PA)and a non-protected area(Non-PA).Methods All three studied fragments are situated in northern Minas Gerais state,*** estimated the aboveground carbon stocks based on the forest *** also measured three dimensions of biodiversity metrics for each plot:functional trait dominance,taxonomic diversity and functional *** following functional traits were evaluated for the species:wood density,maximum diameter and seed *** carried out generalized linear models seeking to evaluate how carbon stocks,community-weighted mean(CWM)trait values,species richness and diversity,and functional diversity indices differ among the *** Findings The Cerrado areas without protection status had lower carbon stocks,species richness,species diversity,functional richness and functional dispersion,whereas both PA and Non-PA had lower CWM maximum diameter and seed size compared with the Legal Reserve control *** linear models showed that carbon stocks,species and functional richness metrics were correlated within and across sites,and thus,species richness could serve as a good proxy for functional richness and carbon *** carbon stocks were positively driven by species richness and CWM maximum diameter,while they were negatively driven by functional *** richness,species diversity and CWM seed size appeared in the set of best models,but with no significant direct effect on carbon ***,we concluded that absence of protection in the Cerrado areas decreases both species richness and carbon stocks.

S-ALOHA （Slotted ALOHA） random access protocol is a widely used protocol mainly for the transmission of short packets in wireless networks. Most papers consider either an infinite population model where the impact of the backoff protocol cannot be adequately evaluated or a finite population model where the number of nodes is fixed. In this letter, a combination of both models is proposed using the time-scale decomposition technique. This methodology allows to study the system under more realistic conditions where the dynamics of users enter and leaving the system are reflected on the performance of the system as well as the impact of the backoff protocol. Also, it allows studying the system in non-saturation conditions. The proposed methodology divides the analysis in two parts： packet-level and connection-level. This analysis renders suitable results when the time scale of the packet level and connection level statistics is different. On the other hand, when these scales are similar, the proposed methodology is no longer suited.

Total esophagogastrectomy plus extended lymphadenectomy with transverse colon interposition:A treatment for extensive esophagogastric junction cancer

AIM:To review the post-operative morbidity and mortality of total esophagogastrectomy(TEG) with second barrier lymphadenectomy(D2) with interposition of a transverse colon and to determine the oncological outcomes of TEG D2 with interposition of a transverse ***:This study consisted of a retrospective review of patients with a cancer diagnosis who underwent TEG between 1997 and 2013. Demographic data,surgeryprotocols,complications according to Clavien-Dindo classifications,final pathological reports,oncological follow-ups and causes of death were recorded. We used the TNM 2010 and Japanese classifications for nodal dissection of gastric cancer. We used descriptive statistical analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically ***:The series consisted of 21 patients(80.9% men). The median age was 60 years. The 2 main surgical indications were extensive esophagogastric junction cancers(85.7%) and double cancers(14.2%). The mean total surgery time was 405 min(352-465 min). Interposition of a transverse colon through the posterior mediastinum was used for replacement in all cases. Splenectomy was required in 13 patients(61.9%),distal pancreatectomy was required in 2 patients(9.5%) and resection of the left adrenal gland was required in 1 patient(4.7%). No residual cancer surgery was achieved in 75.1% of patients. A total of 71.4% of patients had a postoperative complication. Respiratory complications were the most frequently observed complication. Postoperative mortality was 5.8%. Median follow-up was 13.4 mo. Surgery specific survival at 5 years of follow-up was 32.8%; for patients with curative surgery,it was 39.5% at 5 ***:TEG for cancer with interposition of a transverse colon is a very complex surgery,and it presents high post-operative morbidity and adequate oncological outcomes.

Sperm quality in mice acutely treated with parathion

Aim: To investigate the toxic effect of a single injection of the organophosphorous agropesticide, parathion, on sper-matogenesis in immature male mice. Methods: Seven-day old mice received a single injection of parathion intraperi-toneally at a dose of 1/3 LD_50. The epididymal sperm count, sperm morphology and chromatin thermal stability wereanalyzed 28 and 50 days after injection. Results: Sperm counts were decreased and teratozoospermia and thermal de-naturation of DNA increased after parathion injection. Sperm parameters were changed to a greater extent in younger an-imals, denoting a higher lability of spermatogenic process at its beginning. The damages could recover a long time afterparathion administration. Conclusion: Organophosphorous agropesticides are testicular toxicants, eliciting reversiblecytotoxic and cytogenetic alterations in germ cells.

Development of a nanostructured filter for pyrolysis wax purification:Effects of particulate filter aids

Wax obtained from the pyrolysis of polyethylene waste can contain inorganic contaminants and must be purified before *** evaluated different filter aids(perlite,sand,and rice husk ash)for the filtration of a crude wax and a pyrolysis wax through a filter medium that was coated with nylon 6 nanofibers to improve filtration *** first examined the performance of the filter aids in improving crude wax filtration,with the filtration time,temperature,and pressure held constant at 1 h,170℃,and 2.5 bar,*** wax was then produced by pyrolysis of high-density polyethylene(HDPE)waste in the temperature range 425-475℃.The best filter aid was perlite,which had a filtrate production rate of 5.47×10^(-5)m^(3)/*** highest oily wax yield(87.8%)was achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 425℃.The assembly comprising the filter medium coated with nylon 6 nanofibers plus perlite as a filter aid was most suitable for removing impurities from the oily wax generated by the HDPE pyrolysis as it achieved a purification efficiency of 99.9%.

Provenance and drainage system of the Early Cretaceous volcanic detritus in the Himalaya as constrained by detrital zircon geochronology

The age range of the major intra-plate volcanic event that affected the northern Indian margin in the Early Cretaceous is here defined precisely by detrital zircon geochronology. U-Pb ages of Early Cretaceous detrital zircons found in the Cretaceous to the Paleocene sandstones cluster mainly between 142 Ma and 123 Ma in the northern Tethys Himalayan unit, and between 140 Ma and 116 Ma in the southern Tethys Himalayan unit. The youngest and oldest detrital zircons within this group indicate that volcanism in the source areas started in the latest Jurassic and ended by the early Albian. Stratigraphic data indicate that volcaniclastic sedimentation began significantly earlier in southern Tibet （Tithonian） than in Nepal （Valangin- ian）, and considerably later in Spiti and Zanskar （Aptian/AIbian） to the west. This apparent westward migration of magmatism was explained with progressive westward propagation of extensional/transtensional tectonic activity and development of fractures cutting deeply across the Indian continental margin crust. However, detrital zircon geochronology provides no indication of heterochroneity in magmatic activity in the source areas from east to west, and thus lends little support to such a scenario. Westward migration of volcaniclastic sedimentation may thus reflect instead the westward progradation of major drainage systems supplying volcanic detritus sourced from the same volcanic centers in the east. Development of multiple radial drainage away from the domal surface uplift associated with magmatic upwelling, as observed for most large igneous provinces around the world, may also explain why U-Pb ages of detrital zircons tend to cluster around 133-132 Ma （the age of the Cornel igneous province） in Tethys Himalayan units, but around 118-117 Ma （the age of the Rajmahal igneous province） in Lesser Himalayan units.

Effect of a bacterial inoculum and additive on dry matter in situ degradability of sugarcane silage

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding a bacterial inoculum and a handmade additive to sugarcane silage（SCS） on the in situ digestibility of dry matter（DM）. The treatments were： T1） sugarcane silage（SCS） and T2） sugarcane silage with 1% inoculum and 1% additive（SCS＋）. The bacterial inoculum consisted of 10.0% molasses, 1.0% yogurt, 5.0% chicken manure, 0.5% urea, and 83.0% water, and the additive was formulated with 1.0% urea, 0.1% ammonium sulfate, and 0.25% phosphorus. In situ dry matter digestibility（DMD） was determined using the nylon bag technique with four cows equipped with ruminal fistulas. Cows were fed with ensiled sugarcane supplemented with 1 kg of commercial concentrate. 5 g of ground sample for each sugarcane treatment were weighted in nylon bags and incubated for 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h in a completely randomized design with six replicates. The DMD（%） was higher（P〈0.05） for SCS＋ for all incubation times when compared with SCS. There were no differences in ruminal p H between the treatments for all the incubation times. The data suggested that the sugarcane silage with bacterial inoculum and additive could be an alternative for providing forage for ruminants during the season of low growth and quality grass.

Sounds Synthesis with Slime Mould of Physarum Polycephalum

This paper introduces a novel application of bionic engineering： a bionic musical instrument using Physarum polycephalum. Physarum polycephalum is a huge single cell with thousands of nuclei, which behaves like a giant amoeba. During its foraging behavior this plasmodium produces electrical activity corresponding to different physiological states. We developed a method to render sounds from such electrical activity and thus represent spatio-temporal behavior of slime mould in a form apprehended auditorily. The electrical activity is captured by various electrodes placed on a Petri dish containing the cultured slime mold. Sounds are synthesized by a bank of parallel sinusoidal oscillators connected to the electrodes. Each electrode is responsible for one partial of the spectrum of the resulting sound. The behavior of the slime mould can be controlled to produce different timbres.
