Biochar and sugar cane filter cake interaction on physical and hydrological soil properties under tropical field conditions

Biochar is known for its effects on carbon sequestration and soil ***,there is a lack of information about its effects on soil physical and hydraulic properties for tropical *** assessed the effects of biochar(BC)plus sugar cane filter cake(FC)rate,and time of interaction on soil physical and hydraulic properties under humid tropical *** this purpose,a field experiment was installed at a loamy sandy soil with five treatments and four replicates:control(only soil),25 mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake,and 25 mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake plus 6.25,12.5,and 25 mg ha^(−1) miscanthus biochar,respectively,two soil depths(0-10 and 10-20 cm)and two times of interaction(9 and 18 months).Physical prop-erties(aggregate stability,bulk density,total porosity,pores size distribution)and hydraulic properties(soil water holding capacity,hydraulic conductivity,plant-available water holding capacity)were measured after nine and eighteen *** bulk density decreased slightly,and the porosity increased after nine months,for the biochar plus sugar cane filter cake(both 25 mg ha^(−1)).After 18 months,biochar plus filter cake interaction increase micropores,aggregate stability,and plant-available water *** hydraulic conductivity was not influenced by sugar cane filter ***,biochar significantly reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity when combined with sugar cane filter cake after 18 *** concluded that sugar cane filter cake in combination with biochar modified the pore size distribution,slightly increased plant-available water holding capacity,and significantly decreased saturated hydraulic conductivity.

In vitro effect of amoxicillin and clarithromycin on the 3' region of cagA gene in Helicobacter pylori isolates

One major difficulty in the application of distributed hydrological models is the availability of data with sufficient quantity and quality to perform an adequate evaluation of a watershed and to capture its *** Soil&Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was used in this study to analyze the hydrologic responses to different sources,spatial scales,and temporal resolutions of weather inputs for the semi-arid Jaguaribe watershed(73000 km2)in northeastern *** different simulations were conducted,based on four groups of weather and precipitation inputs:Group 1-SWAT Weather Generator based on monthly data from four airport weather stations and daily data based on 124 local rain gauges;Group 2-daily local data from 14 weather stations and 124 precipitation gauges;Group 3-Daily values from a global coupled forecast model(NOAA’s Climate Forecast System Reanalysis-CFSR);and Group 4-CFSR data with 124 local precipitation *** four simulations were evaluated using multiple statistical efficiency metrics for four streamflow gauges,using:Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient(NSE),determination coefficient(R2),the ratio of the root mean square to the standard deviation of the observed data(RSR),and the percent bias(PBIAS).The Group 4 simulation performed best overall(provided the best statistical values)with results ranked as“good”or“very good”on all four efficiency metrics suggesting that using CFSR data for weather parameters other than precipitation,coupled with precipitation data from local rain gauges,can provide reasonable hydrologic *** second best results were obtained with Group 1,which provided“good”results in three of four efficiency *** 2 performed worse overall than Groups 1 and 4,probably due to uncertainty related to daily measures and a large percentage of missing *** 2 and 3 were“unsatisfactory”according to three or four of the efficiency metrics,indicating that the choice of weather data is very important.

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes type 2 in cryptogenic cirrhosis

AIm: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (mS), obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2Dm) in a group of mexican mestizo patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) and to compare this group with patients with cirrhosis secondary to other causes (disease controls). mETHODS: Patients with CC, diagnosed between January, 1990 and April, 2005, were included in a retrospective study. Patients with cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis C, alcohol abuse or autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) served as disease controls. RESULTS: A total of 134 patients with CC were analyzed. Disease controls consisted of 81 patients with chronic hepatitis C, 33 with alcohol abuse and 20 with AIH. The median age of patients with CC was 57 years (range, 16-87); 83 (61.9%) patients were female; 53 (39.6%) were Child A, 65 (48.5%) Child B, and 16 (11.9%) were Child C cirrhosis. The prevalence of mS (29.1% vs 6%; P m (40% vs 22.4%; P = 0.013) was higher in CC patients than in disease controls. There were no differences in sex, age or liver function tests between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of mS, obesityand T2Dm were higher in patients with CC than in patients with cirrhosis secondary to others causes. Our findings support the hypothesis that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) plays an under-recognized role in CC.

On a Generalized model in Accelerated Life Testing

The main objective of accelerated life tests in this setting is the recovery of the distribution of the random variable representing lifetime which is difficult to observe at a certain level of a given stress factor. A general model for accelerated life test is proposed that utilizes the inverse problem approach, that is, the variable is observe at different level/s and the transfer function is used to recover the elusive random variable (life time). The problem then is reduced to finding the transfer function. We derive some properties of the proposed general model. The Lognormal distribution and the Arrhenius model for lifetime are used as examples. Its relationship with the Cox proportional hazards model is also discussed.

Horizontal and vertical fluxes of particulate matter during wind erosion on arable land in the province La Pampa, Argentina

A detailed analysis of horizontal and vertical particulate matter(Pm) fluxes during wind erosion has been done, based on measurements of Pm smaller than 10, 2.5, and 1.0 μm, at windward and leeward positions on a measuring field. The three fractions of Pm measurement are differently influenced by the increasing wind and shear velocities of the wind. The measured concentrations of the coarser fractions of the fine dust, Pm10, and Pm2.5, increase with wind and shear velocity, whereas the Pm1.0concentrations show no clear correlation to the shear velocity. The share of Pm2.5on Pm10depends on the measurement height and wind speed and varies between 4 and 12 m/s at the 1 m height ranging from 25% to 7%(average 10%),and at the 4 m height from 39% to 23%(average 30%). Although general relationships between wind speed, Pm concentration, and horizontal and vertical fluxes could be found, the contribution of the measuring field was very low, as balances of incoming and outgoing fluxes show. Consequently, the measured Pm concentrations are determined from a variety of sources, such as traffic on unpaved roads,cattle drives, tillage operations, and wind erosion, and thus, represent all components of land use and landscape structure in the near and far surroundings of the measuring field. The current results may reflect factors from the landscape scale rather than the influence of field-related variables. The measuring devices used to monitor Pm concentrations showed differences of up to 20%, which led to considerable deviations when determining total balances. Differences up to 67% between the calculated fluxes prove the necessity of a previous calibration of the devices used.
