Floral biology and pollination mechanisms of four Mexico-endemic Fuchsia species with contrasting reproductive systems

Aims The evolution of the outstanding variation of reproductive systems in angiosperms has been considered an important driver of line-age *** related hermaphroditic and dioecious species with biotic pollination provide the opportunity to study and compare traits related to pollinator attraction and their con-sequences on reproductive components.A higher predictability of pollination syndromes is expected in dioecious species,which are dependent on pollinators,than in self-compatible hermaphroditic *** species may suffer pollen limitation depending on the quality of floral rewards and the kind and abundance of pollina-tors,whereas no pollen limitation is expected in hermaphroditic spe-cies with autonomous ***,in the absence of pollen limitation,more or better seeds are expected in dioecious species,according to the sexual specialization *** In natural populations of the hermaphroditic Fuchsia fulgens and Fuchsia arborescens and dioecious Fuchsia parviflora and Fuchsia obconica,all endemic to Mexico,we first described flower phenol-ogy,flower production and longevity and nectar volume and ***,we evaluated the correspondence between floral visitors and pollination *** hermaphrodite plants,we determined the level of herkogamy and the potential for autonomous ***,we evaluated the effect of pollen limitation on fruit set and seed number and assessed seed germination for all *** Findings In contrast to our prediction,dioecious species did not show a higher correspondence between pollination syndromes and floral visitors than did hermaphrodites;however,male flowers exhib-ited a higher correspondence than female *** pollen limitation was detected in dioecious species,for which visitation rate did not differ between male and female *** her-maphroditic *** showed pollen limitation for seed number,despite the presence of auto

Catalytic Performance of La0.6Ca0.4Fe1-xNixO3Perovskites in DME Oxidation

Substituted La0.6Ca0.4Fe1-xNixO3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) perovskite-type oxides prepared by the amorphous citrate method have been investigated as catalysts in the dimethyl ether (DME) oxidation reaction. The samples with an x ≤ 0.3 composition show an orthorhombic structure, while the intermediate compositions with 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 show a less crystalline orthorhombic perovskite structure with segregated phases that increase upon increasing the Ni content. The progressive substitution of Fe3+ by Ni2+ in La0.6Ca0.4FeO3 entails the progressive formation of oxygen vacancies and Fe4+ species for Ni substitution degrees of x ≤ 0.5. For larger degrees of substitution with x > 0.7, segregated phases and a progressive loss of the perovskite structure are detected. The highest catalytic performance for the total combustion of DME is obtained from equimolar substitution in the B-site position (Fe0.5Ni0.5), in which a large extent of Fe4+ species and oxygen vacancies are present.

Combining in-situ water quality and remotely sensed data across spatial and temporal scales to measure variability in wet season chlorophyll-a:Great Barrier Reef lagoon(Queensland,Australia)

Introduction:Combining in-situ data from single-point time series with remotely sensed spatial data allowed a greater elucidation of changes in chlorophyll-a concentrations through wet season conditions in the Great Barrier Reef coastal ***:Single-point time-series data were collected from 2006 to 2012 during high river flow conditions to assess changes in phytoplankton biomass(measured as chlorophyll-a).Additionally,three flood plume water types,derived from classified true-colour Aqua moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS)images,were used to group single-point time-series data for the phytoplankton biomass ***:Survey data illustrate the heterogeneity of chlorophyll-a distribution over seasonal and inter-annual cycles and the difficulty in describing community responses through the wet *** spatial data demonstrate distinct regional differences throughout the Great Barrier *** high chlorophyll-a concentrations measured in flood plume waters immediately adj.cent to the inshore,highly turbid‘inner’flood plume are a product of sufficient light,given most of the suspended solids have settled from the plume,and the availability of sufficient nutrients,which drive higher phytoplankton production and characterise the formation of secondary stage flood *** formation and extent of these secondary flood plumes were mapped using MODIS true-colour satellite *** distance and the location of the secondary plume water are reliant on flow,coastal hydrodynamics,and biological ***:The combination of in-situ data and remotely sensed data provides information on the complexity of these coastal processes during the wet season and offers managers a more comprehensive understanding of the extent of nutrient enrichment in the Great Barrier Reef coastal area and the potential influence of flood plumes on coastal marine ecosystems.

Leuprolide acetate induces structural and functional recovery of inj.red spinal cord in rats

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone（Gn RH） and its synthetic analog leuprolide acetate, a Gn RH agonist, have neurotrophic properties. This study was designed to determine whether administration of leuprolide acetate can improve locomotor behavior, gait, micturition reflex, spinal cord morphology and the amount of microglia in the lesion epicenter after spinal cord inj.ry in rats. Rats with spinal cord compression inj.ry were administered leuprolide acetate or saline solution for 5 weeks. At the 5th week, leuprolide acetate-treated rats showed locomotor activity recovery by 38%, had improvement in kinematic gait and exhibited voiding reflex recovery by 60%, as compared with the 1st week. By contrast, saline solution-treated rats showed locomotor activity recovery only by 7%, but voiding reflex did not recover. More importantly, leuprolide acetate treatment reduced microglial immunological reaction and induced a trend towards greater area of white and gray matter in the spinal cord. Therefore, leuprolide acetate has great potential to repair spinal cord inj.ry.

Mathematical modelling for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis dynamics:A new analysis considering updated parameters and notified human Brazilian data

Brazil is one of the highest endemic countries for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis:according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health,the annual number of new human cases and deaths due to this disease has been increasing for the last 20 *** addition,regarding the Americas,the specific relationship between canine and human for Visceral Leishmaniasis dynamics is still not well *** this work we propose a new model for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis,based on the models previously published by Burattini et al.(1998)and Ribas et al.(2013).Herein,we modeled the disease dynamics using a modified set of differential equations from those two authors,considering the same assumptions(inclusion of human,dog and sandfly populations,all constants over time).From this set of equations we were able to calculate the basic reproduction number R 0 and to analyze the stability and sensitivity of the system to the parameters *** main result,when the stability of the system is reached,the normalized reporting human cases rate is estimated in 9.12E-08/*** estimation is very close to the 2015 report from Araçatuba city,5.69E-08/*** also observed from stability and sensitivity analysis that the activity of sandfly population is critical to introduction and maintenance of Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis in the *** addition,the importance of dog as source of infection concentrates on latent dog,since it does not show clinical symptoms and signs and,therefore,has a great contribution to disease *** conclusion,considering the presently ethical issues regarding to elimination of positive dog in Brazil and the highly sensitivity of disease dynamics on sandfly population,we recommend that the sandfly population control should be prioritized.

In this paper, wavelet transform and entropy are evaluated using the mathematical analysis concepts of reflexibility, regularity and series obtention, these concepts remark the reason to make a selective reference framework for power quality applications. With this idea the paper used the same treatment for the two algorithms (Multiresolution and Multiscale Entropy). The wavelet is denoted to have the most power full consistence to the light off the reflexibility, regularity and series obtention. The paper proposes a power quality technique namely MpqAT.

Cerium alleviates drought-induced stress in Phaseolus vulgaris

Extreme drought events are expected to be one of the main challenges for tropical agriculture and,consequently,for global food *** this reason,it is urgent to develop strategies to increase water use efficiency,as well as to increase crops’ ability to cope with *** rare earth elements(REEs) are known to alleviate damages in plants under abiotic stresses,we hypothesized that addition of Ce^3+to nutrient solution would promote the growth of common bean,especially under simulated drought *** test this hypothesis,we conducted an experiment evaluating the effect of six Ce^3+concentrations on the development and physiological traits of common bean grown in nutrient solution under normal condition and under induced drought stress,caused by the addition of polyethylene glycol6000 to the nutrient *** results show that Ce^3+alleviates water stress in common bean plants,increasing their survival rate and *** addition,Ce^3+application increases photosynthesis rate,chlorophyll content and water use efficiency under water ***,we observe no significant effect of Ce^3+on plants growing under normal ***,Ce3+seems to be a promising attenuator of drought stress for common bean.

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body,performing a fundamental role in the regulationof diverse processes,among which the metabolism,secretion,storage,and detoxification of endogenous and exogenous substances are *** to these functions,hepatic diseases continue to be among the main threats to public health,and they remain problems throughout the *** enormous advances in modern medicine,there are no completely effective drugs that stimulate hepatic function,that offer complete protection of the organ,or that help to regenerate hepatic ***,it is necessary to identify pharmaceutical alternatives for the treatment of liver diseases,with the aim of these alternatives being more effective and less *** use of some plants and the consumption of different fruits have played basic roles in human health care,and diverse scientific investigations have indicated that,in those plants and fruits so identified,their beneficial effects can be attributed to the presence of chemical compounds that are called *** present review had as its obj.ctive the collecting of data based on research conducted into some fruits(grapefruit,cranberries,and grapes)and plants[cactus pear(nopal)and cactus pear fruit,chamomile,silymarin,and spirulina],which are consumed frequently by humans and which have demonstrated hepatoprotective capacity,as well as an analysis of a resin(propolis)and some phytochemicals extracted from fruits,plants,yeasts,and algae,which have been evaluated in different models of hepatotoxicity.
