Species richness and density evaluation for plants with aggregated distributions:fixed *** area methods

Aims Knowledge of species richness is of prime importance to both basic and applied aspects of ecological ***,quantifying plant species richness in the tropics is potentially time-consuming because of high species *** species richness estimates are also frequently biased,because many rare species are not *** address these problems,the use of a variable area method has been proposed as an alternative to fixed area methods,but its appli-cability to plants with aggregated distributions has been questioned based on simulation *** use empirical data to compare the efficiency and accuracy of a variable area method and a fixed area method for estimating species richness,density and basal area for plants with aggregated distributions,using palms as a model *** Adult palms were sampled in twenty 10×30 m transects in an Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state,*** individuals were considered in the fixed area method,while in the variable area method only the first six adults in each transect were sampled;in this case,transect length was defined according to the distance of the sixth adult from the beginning of the *** fewer than six individuals were observed in a given transect,transect length was extended up to 50 m to search for additional *** efficiency of both methods was compared based on species rarefaction curves,using the chao 1 statistic(for abundance data).For each species we calculated mean density per transect and basal area,according to each sampling *** effort in terms of the number of individual plants and the area necessary to characterize maximum species richness in each sampling method,as well as mean time taken to sample a single transect,were compared as measures of *** findings An accurate estimate of species richness was achieved using both methods,but in the variable area method,a quarter of the number of individuals and half the area was sufficient

The FloripaSat-I project consists of an initiative from the Federal University of Santa Catarina(UFSC),in Brazil,to train students to design,test and integrate innovative space *** group just developed its first open-source CubeSat,the FloripaSat-I,which aims to empower students to develop space systems through a practical approach,where they have full control of the design and test of a real *** project has already gone through all the stages of a CubeSat mission prior to the launching and operation stages.A prototype of the satellite,as well the engineering models 1 and 2(EM-I and EM-II)were *** expertise provided by the engineering models allows the development of a functional flight model(FM).This paper presents the validation and qualification tests that pass various FloripaSat-I models,from the engineering model to the flight *** stages of the project are described,the tests performed in each phase,as well as the lessons ***,this paper serves as a guidance for other university teams that want to test their own CubeSats,as well as teams that want to use the open-source hardware and software left as heritage by this project.

Soil boron fertilization:The role of nutrient sources and rootstocks in citrus production

Boron （B） is a key element for citrus production, especially in tropical regions, where the nutrient availability is commonly low in the soil. In addition, information about doses, fertilizer sources, methods of application, and particularly, differential nutrient demand of scion/rootstock combinations are required for efficient fertilization of commercial groves. In a non-irri- gated sweet orange orchard （cv. Natal）, grafted onto Rangpur lime, Swingle citrumelo or Sunki mandarin, we studied the application of two sources of B： boric acid （17% B, soluble in water） and ulexite （12% B, partiaJly soluble in water） at four levels of supply （control without B, and soil application of 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B）. The experiment was carried out for three years （2004-2006）. Boron availability in the soil and concentration in the leaves, as well as the fruit yield and quality of trees were evaluated. Soil B extracted with hot water and total leaf B positively correlated with doses of the nutrient applied to the trees. Levels of B in the soil and in the leaves did not vary with fertilizer sources. Fruit yield of trees grafted onto Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo was more responsive to B doses than those grafted onto Sunki mandarin. The maximum fruit yield of trees grafted onto Swingle was obtained with 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1 of B, and leaf B level of 280 mg kg-1 that point out to a highest demand for B when this combination was compared with other rootstocks. Furthermore, fertilization with B did not affect the quality of fruits, but correlated with B and potassium （K） concentrations in the leaves. These results also support that the current recommendations for levels of B in leaves should be revisited.

AIM:To analyze the role of rs12979860 and rs8099917polymorphisms in hepatitis C virus(HCV)genotype 1infection of ***:A total of 145 adult patients diagnosed with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C(CHC)who had completed a 48-wk regimen of pegylated-interferonα-2a or-2b plus ribavirin combination therapy were recruited from six large urban healthcare centers and199 healthy blood donors(controls)from a single site between January 2010 and January *** on the patients’response to treatment was *** chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism genotyping of the interleukin(IL)28B gene fragment encompassing the single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)rs12979860(C/T)and rs8099917(T/G)was carried out for 79 of the CHC patients and 199 of the ***-directional amplicon sequencing of the two SNPs was carried out for the remaining 66 CHC ***:SNP rs12979860 genotyping was successful in 99.5%of the controls and 97.2%of the CHC patients,whereas the SNP rs8099917 genotyping was successful in 95.5%of the controls and 100%of the CHC *** genotype and allele distributions for both rs12979860 and rs8099917 were significantly different between the control and CHC patient groups,with significantly higher genotype frequencies of CC and TT in the controls(P=0.037 and 0.046,respectively)and of TT and GG in the CHC patients(P=0.0009and 0.0001,respectively).Analysis of the CHC patients who achieved sustained virological response(SVR)to treatment(n=55)indicated that the rs12979860 C allele and CC genotype were predictors of SVR(P=0.02).No significant correlation was found between rs8099917 genotypes and treatment response,but carriers of the T allele showed significantly higher rates of SVR(P=0.02).Linkage disequilibrium analysis of the group that achieved SVR showed a significant association between rs12979860 and rs8099917(P=0.07).CONCLUSION:The higher allele frequency of rs12979860 C and rs8099917 T observed in non-HCVinfec

Fluoride Exposure Compromises Gas Exchange of Plants

Fluorine (F-) stands out for its phytotoxic potential, because it accumulates in plants, changes enzymes activity, reduces chlorophyll content and, consequently, affects growth and yield of crop plants. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of F- on leaf gas exchange in coffee and sweet orange plants, compared to sensitive (gladiolus) and tolerant (ryegrass) reference species. Plants grown in pots were exposed to F- in a semi-open mist chamber. The experimental design was completely randomized with treatments defined by the combination of plant species and two intensities of exposure to atmospheric F, with nebulization of HF solutions (low = 0.065 mmol·m-3 and high = 0.260 mmol·m-3) in a mist chamber, as well as with non-exposed control samples. CO2 assimilation (A), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs) and chlorophyll fluorescence rates were measured after 27 days of treatment application. The leaf gas exchange variables in ryegrass and orange plants did not vary in response to the increase in atmospheric F, while an increase in gs and E values was observed in gladiolus and coffee plants. A decrease in A and potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was found for gladiolus plants. On the contrary, an increase of A for coffee plants was associated with the apparent effect previously reported about the loss of leaf stomatal regulation related to the short assessment period of plants in this experiment. Damages caused to the photosynthetic system were reflected in the susceptibility of the evaluated species to the contamination by the element.

Adrenal Insufficiency by Adrenoleukodystrophy

The X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a severe neurodegenerative disorder due to mutations in the ABCD1 gene. Objective: To report a case of a 19-year-old man with adrenal insufficiency due to adrenoleukodystrophy. Method: Case report and literature review. Result: A previously healthy 19-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency room with nausea and vomiting for 5 days, who progressed to abdominal pain, severe asthenia, and fever (38.5°C). He referred progressive darkening of the skin, oral mucosa, tongue and nail bed of the hands and feet, observed in the last 6 years. Emergency laboratory evaluation showed severe hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, which, together with decreased plasma cortisol, directed the investigation to causes of adrenal insufficiency. High ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone) and very long chain fatty acid levels closed the diagnosis. Discussion: ALD is characterized by progressive demyelination in the central and peripheral nervous system and adrenal insufficiency consequence to the accumulation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) in the adrenal. The overall incidence of ALD is 1:17,000. Adrenal insufficiency may be the first symptom of ALD in boys and adults. The diagnosis is based on the measurement of VLCFA plasma levels. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is the only treatment that provides a permanent cure when the procedure is performed at an early stage of brain demyelination, i.e. when patients are asymptomatic, although brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is abnormal. Treatment of Addison’s disease is obligatory, but does not change the course of neurological symptoms.

Atelosteogenesis Type 2/Diastrophic Dysplasia Phenotypic Spectrum: From Prenatal to Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

Atelosteogenesis type II (AO2) and diastrophic dysplasia (DTD) are two recessively inherited, severe skeletal dysplasias caused by mutations in the SLC26A2 gene. AO2 is an invariably lethal condition, while DTD patients may reach adult life, although both diseases have overlapping diagnostic features. Here we report a patient with an intermediate phenotype between AO2 and DTD and present the successful application of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in this situation. Sequencing of SLC26A2 alleles in the infant identified two compound heterozygous mutations, ***178Ter and ***279Trp, of paternal and maternal origin, respectively. At request from the parents, PGD was developed by haplotype mapping of parental SLC26A2 alleles in eleven five-day embryos. Transference to the mother was attempted twice, finally resulting in pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby. This exemplifies the utility of PGD for inherited lethal conditions with a significant risk of recurrence, and highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias with prenatal manifestation.
