Plasma membrane （PM） Ca2+-ATPase activity in poplar apical bud meristematic cells during short-day （SD）-induced dormancy development was examined by a cerium precipitation EM-cytochemical method. Ca2+-ATPase activity, indicated by the status of cerium phosphate precipitated grains, was localized mainly on the interior face （cytoplasmic side） of the PM when plants were grown under long days and reached a deep dormancy. A few reaction products were also observed on the nuclear *** plant buds were developing dormancy after 28 to 42 d of SD exposure, almost no reaction products were present on the interior face of the PM. In contrast, a large number of cerium phosphate precipitated grains were distributed on the exterior face of the PM. After 70 d of SD exposure, when buds had developed a deep dormancy, the reaction products of Ca2+-ATPase activity again appeared on the interior face of the PM. The results seemed suggesting that two kinds of Ca2+-ATPases may be present on the PM during the SD-induced dormancy in *** is the Ca2+-punlping ATPase, which is located on the interior face of the PM, for maintaining and restoring the Ca2+homeostasis. The other might be an ecto-Ca2+-ATPase, which is located on the exterior face of the PM, for the exocytosis of cell wall materials as suggested by the fact of the cell wall thickening during the dormancy developlnent in poplar.

A NEW APPROACH TO MODELING OF TRAFFIC FLOW IN CITIES

Based on the properties of traffic, macroscopic dynamic equations are set up to simulate the flow of traffic. Besides relaxation term and compressibility term, a changeable area term is composed in the model to describe the effect of car parking, toll-booth, traffic incidents, road grading and bicycles on traffic flow. With numerical method, three cases are presented to simulate the changing lane area with time and space and the propagating process of high traffic density. The results show that the dynamic model can reasonably describe the evolution of traffic states in various complicated occasions.

Subjective Well-Being and Its Determinant from A Study of Beijing’s Urban Elderly

This study was designed to obtain an understanding of the subjective well-being (SWB) status among China’s urban elderly, and to find out the major factors that could influence the status in question. Our survey was conducted of 233 urban elderly individuals, and the data was statistically examined by multiple regression analysis with the results that: 1) The SWB of China’s urban elderly was relatively high as only 4.5% of all respondents considered themselves unhappy or very unhappy; 2) Major factors that had an influence on SWB included economic resource, mobility, age and social support; and 3) Five demographic variables accounted for 18.6% of the variance in SWB, which was slightly higher than that of foreign findings. It is concluded that financial security, active participation in physical and social activities, and social support are necessary for the improvement of the SWB of the elderly.

Cue-dependency and Frequency Effects: Evidence from Chinese

The present study disclosed that a) prime stimuli had a significant effect on the object in implicit tests, but not in the explicit condition, and b) greater priming occurred when the study and test fonts coincided than whey they differeds, Moreover,the performance in implicit memory tests was more impaired by a shift from official to printed fonts than by a shift in the reverse direction. In addition, the results also revealed that low frequency materials produced more priming than did high frequency materials in implicit memory tests, but less effect of this variable on priming in explicit memory tests could be obtained with the same target characters. The above results implied that a transfer appropriate processing approach suggested by Roediger, Weldon and Challis (1989) is more acceptable to interpret the dissociation between implicit and explicit memory. The authors also critically commented on the implicit memory tests of Chinese widely used by researchers.

Three-dimensional calculations of the currents in the Huanghai Sea and East China Sea during June of 1999

Based on the wind and hydrographic data obtained by R/V Xiangyanghong 14 during June of 1999, the currents in the Huanghai Sea and East China Sea are computed by the three dimensional non-linear diagnostic, semidiagnostic models and prognostic in the a coordinate. The computed results show that the density and velocity fields and so on have been adjusted when time is about 3 days, namely the solution of semidiagnostic calculation is obtained. In the northwest part of the computed region, the Huanghai coastal current flows southeastward, and then it flows out the computed region south of Cheju Island. In the west side of the southern part of the computed region, there is other current, which is mainly inshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current, and it flows cyclonically and turns to the northeast. In the region north of the above two currents, there is a cyclonic eddy southwest of Cheju Island, and it has characteristics of high density and low temperature. There is an offshore branch of Taiwan Warm Current in the west side of the Kuroshio, and it makes a cyclonic meander, then flows northeastward. The Kuroshio in the East China Sea is stronger, and flows northeastward. Its maximum horizontal velocity is 108.5 cm/s at the sea surface, which is located at the northern boundary, and it is 106.1 cm/s at 30 m level, 102.2 cm/s at 75 m level and 85.1 cm/s at 200 m level, respectively, which are all located at the southern boundary. Comparing the results of diagnostic calculation with those of semidiagnostic and prognostic calculations indicates that the horizontal velocity field agrees qualitatively, and there is a little difference between them in quantity. The comparison between the computed velocities and the observed velocities at the mooring station show that they agree each other.

Climate Changes in the 21st Century over the Asia-Pacific Region Simulated by the NCAR CSM and PCM

The Climate System Model (CSM) and the Parallel Climate Model (PCM), two coupled global climate models without flux adjustments recently developed at NCAR, were used to simulate the 20th century climate using historical greenhouse gas and sulfate aerosol forcing. These simulations were extended through the 21st century under two newly developed scenarios, a business-as-usual case (BAU, CO2≈710 ppmv in 2100) and a CO2 stabilization case (STA550, CO2≈540 ppmv in 2100). The simulated changes in temperature, precipitation, and soil moisture over the Asia-Pacific region (10°-60°N, 55°-155°) are analyzed, with a focus on the East Asian summer monsoon rainfall and climate changes over the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Under the BAU scenario, both the models produce surface warming of about 3-5℃ in winter and 2-3℃ in summer over most Asia. Under the STA550 scenario, the warming is reduced by 0.5-1.0℃ in winter and by 0.5℃ in summer. The warming is fairly uniform at the low latitudes and does not induce significant changes in the zonal mean Hadley circulation over the Asia-Pacific do- main While the regional precipitation changes from single CSM integrations are noisy, the PCM ensemble mean precipitation shows 10%-30% increases north of ～ 30°N and～10% decreases south of ～ 30°N over the Asia-Pacific region in winter and 10%-20% increases in summer precipitation over most of the region. Soil moisture changes are small over most Asia The CSM single simulation suggests a 30% increase in river runoff into the Three Gorges Dam, but the PCM ensemble simulations show small changes in the runoff

Msx homeobox gene family and craniofacial development

Vertebrate Msx genes are unlinked, homeobox-containing genes that bear homology to the Drosophila muscle segment homeobox gene. These genes are expressed at multiple sites of tissue-tissue interactions during vertebrate embryonic development. Inductive interactions mediated by the Msx genes are essential for normal craniofacial, limb and ectodermal organ morphogenesis, and are also essential to survival in mice, as manifested by the pheno typic abnormalities shown in knockout mice and in humans. This review summarizes studies on the expression, regulation, and functional analysis of Msx genes that bear relevance to craniofacial development in humans and mice.
