Antioxidant and Cytotoxicity Potential of Six Synthesized Chalcones

Background: Chalcones are open-chain flavonoids which display a large number of pharmacological activities such as cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory including antioxidant. The objective of this study was to assess antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of six synthesized chalcones. Methodology: For the current experiments, 1,3-diphenylpropenone (compound R) was used as molecular model to synthetize six compounds, namely three benzyl-benzimidazolyl-chalcones (U1, U2, WAC1) and three imidazopyridinyl-chalcones (V1, V2, V3). All the compounds were evaluated for their ability to scavenge the stable free ABTS.+ radical cation, according to the method develop by Choong et al. In addition, the cytotoxicity test described by Price et al., was performed using healthy human cell line, then in human malignant cell lines (HEP-2, A549). Results: All synthesized chalcones reduced the ABTS.+ radical cation. Indeed, benzyl benzimidazolyl compounds WAC1, U1, U2, by developing respectively 39.61%, 66.09%, and 84.20% percentages of reduction, showed an antioxidant effect 6, 11 and 14 times greater than the compound R (6.14%). As a result, imidazopyridinyl-chalcones compounds, namely V1, V2 and V3 reduced the ABTS.+ radical cation at 91.62%, 99.84% and 97.45% respectively, being 15 and 16 times more active than the compound R. About cytotoxicity, V2 inhibited not significantly HEP-2 malignant cells growth at 48.64%, compared to the standard product, i.e. doxorubicin that inhibited the growth of the same cells at 42.37%. WAC1 inhibited significantly the growth of A549 malignant cells at 89.53%, more than doxorubicin which percentage of growth inhibition was 71.58%. Conclusion: The presence of the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system (or 1,3-diphenylpropenone) along with a benzimidazole or imidazopyridine heterocyclic ring is likely to contribute to both cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of these compounds.

Influence of the Year and Growing Area on Maize (Zea mays L.) Production in the Central and north-Central Zones of Côte d’Ivoire (Departments of Bouake and Katiola)

Several studies conducted in recent years in Côte d’Ivoire reveal that agriculture is increasingly affected by the adverse effects of climate variability. The present study aims at evaluating the effect of the zone and the year of cultivation on the productivity of maize in the Central and north-Central zones of Cote d’Ivoire. It was carried out for two years (2020 and 2021). The experimental design used was a completely randomized block design with three replications. Observations were made on 12 agronomic parameters (plant size, internode size, collar diameter, number of leaves, number of internodes, cob insertion level, cob length, cob diameter, total kernels, cob dry weight, kernel dry weight, yield). The results showed that all agronomic traits of maize were significantly influenced by locality, except for the number of leaves. The highest values of the traits were observed in the locality of Bouaké. However, the year of cultivation did not influence the agronomic parameters of maize. This study will help to avoid yield decreases due to rainfall disturbances as a consequence of climate change.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on Copper Corrosion Inhibition by Cefixime Drug in 1M HnO<sub>3</sub>Solution

Cefixime, a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic was used as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 1M HnO3 solution. The study was conducted through the weight loss technique at 298 - 318 K and theoretical studies based on quantum chemistry. The studied drug inhibited the corrosion of copper in 1M HnO3 over the cefixime concentration range (0.02 - 2 mM). The inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in the inhibitor concentration to reach 91.07% at 2 mM, but decreased with an increase in temperature. The thermodynamic functions related to the adsorption of cefixime on the copper surface and that of the metal dissolution were computed and analyzed. The results point out spontaneous adsorption, mainly through a physisorption mechanism following Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and an endothermic dissolution process. Quantum chemical calculations were also performed at B3LYP level with 6-31G (d, p) basis set and lead to molecular descriptors such as EHOMO (energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital), ELUMO (energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), ΔE (energy gap) and μ (dipole moment). The global reactivity descriptors such as χ (electronegativity), χ (global hardness), S (global softness), and ω (electrophilicity index) were derived using koopman’s theorem and analyzed. The local reactivity parameters, including Fukui functions and dual descriptors were determined and discussed. Experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement.

Detection of Epilepsy Cases in newborns

Epilepsy is a very common worldwide neurological disorder that can affect a person’s quality of life at any age. People with epilepsy typically have recurrent seizures that can lead to injury or in some cases even death. Curing epilepsy requires risky surgery. If not, the patient may be subjected to a long drug treatment associated with lifestyle advice without guarantee of total recovery. However, regardless of the type of treatment performed, late treatment necessarily creates psychological instability in the patient. It is therefore important to be able to diagnose the disease as early as possible if we desire that the patient does not suffer from its consequences on their mental health. That is why the study aims to propose a model for detecting epilepsy in order to be able to identify it as early as possible, especially in newborns. The objective of the article is to propose a model for detecting epilepsy using data from electroencephalogram signals from 10 newborns. This model developed using the extra trees classifier technique offers the possibility of predicting epilepsy in infants with an accuracy of around 99.4%.

Impacts of Field Harvesting and Conservation Practices on the Physical Quality of Yam “Kponan” (Dioscorea cayenensis-rotundata) of Côte D’Ivoire

Yam “Kponan” (Dioscorea cayenensis-rotundata) is a popular staple food in Côte d’Ivoire. However, its rapid decay during conservation prevents regular supply of markets. The objective of this study was therefore to assess the impact of field cultivation and conservation practices on some physical quality parameters of “Kponan”. To this end, “Kponan” yam from three production areas (Bondoukou, Bouna, kouassi-kouassikro) was cultivated in each area. At maturity, physical parameters of yams at harvest and after 3 months of storage in field were analyzed. The results showed that injury was the most significant deterioration in yam harvest. The rate of injured yams was highest for hoe-harvested in kouassi-kouassikro area (16.67% - 22.22%) regardless of the origin of the cuttings. The main damage observed after the 3 months of storage was rots (22.86% - 60.00%) and weight loss (8.57% - 42.86%). However, yams stored in pits in Bouna zone had less damage (40% - 48.87%) than those stored under straw huts in Bondoukou locality (100%) and at shade under a tree in kouassi-kouassikro area (100%). In conclusion, the physical quality of “Kponan” in field is most affected by abusive use of herbicides during weeding and clearing, hoe harvesting and storage in the shade under a tree.

Comparative Study of Lead-Free Perovskite Solar Cells Using Different Hole Transporter Materials

In recent years, there has been an unprecedented rise in the performance of metal halide perovskite solar cells. The lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have drawn much research interest due to the Pb toxicity of the lead halide perovskite. CH3nH3SnI3 is a viable alternative to CH3nH3PbX3. In this work,?we designed a tin-based perovskite simulated model with the novel architecture of (TCO)/buffer (TiO2)/absorber (Perovskite)/hole transport material (HTM) and analyzed using the solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS-1D), which is well adapted to study the photovoltaic architectures. In the paper, we studied the influences of perovskite thickness and the doping concentration on the solar cell performance through theoretical analysis and device simulation. The results are indicating that the lead-free CH3nH3SnI3 is having the greatpotential to be an absorber layer with suitable inorganic hole transport materials?like CuI (PCE: 23.25%), Cu2O (PCE: 19.17%), organic hole transport materials?like spiro-OMETAD (PCE: 23.76%) and PTAA (PCE: 23.74%) to achieve high?efficiency. This simulation model will become a good guide for the fabrication?of high efficiency tin-based perovskite solar. The results show that the lead-free CH3nH3SnI3 is a potential environmentally friendly solar cells with high efficiency.

This study aims at determining and comparing the in vitro antifungal activity of six EOs （essential oils） extracted from Monodora myristica, Melaleuca quinquenervia, Eucalyptus torelliana, Chenopodium ambrosioides, fresh Zingiber officinalis and dehydrated Zingiber officinalis with those of three synthetic fungicides （Callicuivre, Banko plus and Mancozeb） on Sclerotium rolfsii a pathogenic fungus of tomato in Cote d＇Ivoire. The products were added to PDA （potato dextrose agar） medium at various concentrations. The results showed different aspects of the mycelium, different activities on mycelium growth and sclerotia production depending on the explants （mycelium or sclerotia）. Depending on their IC and MGI （mycelium growth inhibition）, the oils stemming from Chenopodium ambrosioides and fresh Zingiber officinalis showed more inhibitory activities on mycelial growth （reduction rate of 100%） and sclerotia production at 250 ppm. These activities were close to or even greater than those of fungicides. The mancozeb fungicide showed stronger activity than the others by inhibiting mycelium growth and sclerotia production of mycelium explants at 250 ppm. This study offers the possibility of using EOs in the control strategies of Sclerotium rolfsii.

More and more Parkia biglobosa plants’ stem barks, and roots are collected for traditional medicine uses. This work aimed to quantify Parkia biglobosa plant parts total polyphenols, total flavonoids contents and their antioxidant activities. The hypothesis was that the plant parts would have different phytochemical contents. So, leaves, stem barks, root barks and mature fruit pulp were collected. Alongside the leaves, the stem and root barks were sliced, air-dried at room temperature for 30 days. Thereafter, the samples were crushed and sieved. Following this, the powders were extracted with distilled water by maceration and decoction. As a result, the decoction was more efficient than the maceration. Leaves had the highest total polyphenol content (14.68), followed by stem barks (11.69), and root barks (9.09 ± 0.43 mg GAE/g) (0.0001 ≤ p ≤ 0.0002). However, for total flavonoid contents, the stem barks were better than the other parts. Indeed, stem barks delivered 0.74 and were followed by leaves for 0.6, and root bark for 0.49 ± 0.02 mg EQ/g (0.0001 ≤ p ≤ 0.0169). Finally, the antioxidant activities were 3.07 and 2.86 ± 0.1 μmol T.E/g, respectively for stem bark, and leaves (p = 0.0532). In conclusion, there is no need to debark the stems, because, in decoction, leaves and stem barks would have the same efficacy.

Improving Resilience Models of Health Systems before COVID-19 Pandemic in Côte d’Ivoire

The resilience of health systems is a major issue and challenge in patients’ safety. This security refers to the ability to adapt, approach, anticipate or change after a shock. These shocks generally concern large-scale situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. To cope with these shocks, certain risk management tools have appeared in healthcare centres. Among these new tools are those called “resilience engineering”. However, failure to master some of them sometimes generates erroneous results that lead to even more serious consequences in decision-making. This article proposes an Ivorian resilience model for managing the coronavirus pandemic. The model is the combination of Bayesian and neural techniques with multilayer perceptron in order to best assist Ivorian specialists in their decision-making.

Endometriosis Revealed by Recurrent Hemorrhagic Ascites

Ascites is a rare manifestation of endometriosis. The case reported is that of a 26-year-old woman with recurrent massive hemorrhagic ascites. The analysis of biopsy specimens made at laparoscopy confirmed the diagnosis. The report noted pelvic endometriosis associated but there was no umbilical or pleural involvement. The evolution was favorable under a long-term hormone treatment (by GnRH analogues) with relay through continuous estrogen-progestogen. The diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of this rare form of endometriosis are presented through a review of the literature.
