Cyperus esculentus(Tiger nut)has been grossly underutilized and unexploited despite its nutritional and medicinal *** research aimed to evaluate the phytochemical,proximate,GC-MS and pharmacological properties such as antioxidant,anticancer,anti-elastase,anti-melanogenic and anti-tyrosinase activity in ethanol and n-hexane extracts of tiger *** pharmacological activities were measured using spectrophotometry,agar well diffusion,MCF-7 and HeLa cell *** tiger nut extracts(ethanol and n-hexane)in the phytochemical and proximate analysis showed the existence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids,glycosides,flavonoids,crude fibres,tannins,proteins,carbohydrates,oxalates,phytates and fats *** ethanol extract showed superior pharmacological(anticancer,antibacterial,anti-melanogenic and antioxidant)activities,especially against the MCF-7 cell *** results for scavenging activity of ethanol extract(IC_(50)=535.57μg/mL)showed significant differences(p<0.05)when compared with n-hexane extract(IC_(50)=645.5μg/mL).The GC-MS assessment of both extracts showed the existence of bioactive *** concentrations(100,200 and 350 mg/mL)of tiger nut extracts against Shigella sp.,Salmonella sp.,Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli demonstrated the highest level of inhibitions at 350 mg/*** findings of the current research showed that tiger nut has a high content of nutrients and bioactive phytochemicals.

Background:Shunt repair for the Norwood procedure with either the right ventricle to pulmonary artery shunt(RVPAS)or the modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Shunt(BTTS)varies by institution and surgeon *** choice has been informed by landmark trials including the Single Ventricle Reconstruction trial and modern outcomes data may engender future complementary ***:We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent the Norwood procedure from 2014–2022 at a single center to compare outcomes by shunt *** primary outcome measure was freedom from death or *** outcome measures included hospital length of stay,complications,and unplanned ***:93 patients underwent the Norwood procedure at a median age of 7 days(IQR 5,9)and 39 weeks gestation(IQR 38,39).67.7%had hypoplastic left heart syndrome.39 patients received a BTTS compared to 54 *** was no difference in operative mortality(BTTS 12.8%,RVPAS 9.3%,p=0.58),death or transplant at 1 year(BTTS 15.4%,RVPAS 7.4%,p=0.31),or between 1 and 3 years(BTTS 0%,RVPAS 5.6%,p=0.26).There was a significantly higher rate of pulmonary arterial stenting in the RVPAS group(BTTS 1.21/100 patient-years,RVPAS 15.68/100 patient-years,p=0.01).Conclusions:Similar short-and medium-term survival were seen in BTTS and RVPAS groups with fewer pulmonary artery interventions for BTTS,though our study is underpowered to suggest superior freedom from *** results may serve as a hypothesis-generating study to revisit the SVR trial with a modern cohort in the setting of improved surgical technique and perioperative management.

Objective Assessment of the bacterium L. sphaericus as a dual-action candidate for biological control of mosquito-borne diseases and bioremediation of toxic metals. Methods Larvae of the mosquito, C quinquefasciatus, were first evaluated for metal tolerance and then exposed to 5 ppm cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and lead in assays together with seven strains of L. sphaericus. A probit regression analysis was used to estimate the LCso of Cd, Cr, As, and Pb to C. quinquefosciatus. An analysis of covariance and multifactorial ANOVA examined the metal biosorption and larvicidal properties of the seven strains of L. sphaericus. Results We found that L. sphaericus adsorbed the toxic metal ions and was toxic against mosquito larvae. The L. sphoericus strain 111（3）7 resulted in a larvae mortality of over 80% for all the tested metals. This strain also exhibited the capacity to adsorb 76% of arsenic, 32% of lead, 25% of chromium, and 7% of cadmium. Conclusion This study found combined metal adsorption and larval toxicity associated with three strains of L. sphaericus [111（3）7, OT4b.31, and CBAM5]. This suggests that a combination of these strains shows strong dual potential for biological control of mosquitos in heavy metal-contaminated areas and remediate the heavy metal contamination as well.

Wetlands are essential subsystem of the general ecosystem with so many functions;like purification and sustenance of ground and surface water resources on earth, and its numerous services that it offers to animal, plant, human (local communities) and the nation’s economy at large. The issue of wetland degradation and wetland loss started when the world was seeing wetlands as unproductive, unhealthy land full of snakes and crocodiles. Niger Delta wetland ecosystem is a very rich and important ecosystem in Nigeria, it harbours some endemic spices both flora and fauna, a hotspot for biodiversity and it is of high economic value for the local communities. This paper reviews that changes have occurred in the study area and the Niger Delta wetlands. The changes were identified to be as a result of human activities (anthropogenic activities) and the ongoing environmental pressure resulting from the large scale oil exploration and exploitation, pipeline installation, urban expansion and agriculture. These were identified as some of the major threats to Apoi creek forest wetland. These findings were obtained after analysing the data obtained which helped to raise awareness that can assist to effectively monitor, protect and conserve the wetland ecosystem.
