Determinants of treatment completion among rural smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients:a cross-sectional survey conducted in south-western Uganda

Background:Treatment completion among tuberculosis patients remains low across various regions of Uganda,despite implementation of directly observed treatment short *** study evaluated the determinants of treatment completion in a rural health sub-district of south western ***:In April 2012,health facility records were reviewed to identify tuberculosis patients who had been initiated on treatment between June 2008 and May 2011,in Rwampara Health sub-District,south-western *** of the 162 patients identified,128(79%)were traced and subsequently interviewed during a survey conducted in June ***(6.8%)of the 162 patients died,while 23(14.2%)could not be traced.A review of records showed that 17 of those that could not be traced completed treatment while the other six did not have definitive ***:Treatment completion among the 128 patients interviewed was 89.8%.Pre-treatment counselling(aOR=24.3,95%CI:1.4-26.6,P=0.03),counselling at the time of submission of sputum during follow up(aOR=6.8,95%CI:1.4-33.7,P=0.02),and refill of drugs on the exact appointment date(aOR=13.4,95%CI:1.9-93.0,P=0.01),were independently associated with treatment ***:The level of treatment completion was higher than the national average,with service-related determinants identified as being critical for ensuring treatment *** data provide further evidence for the need to provide ongoing counselling support to tuberculosis *** the opportunities for counselling of tuberculosis patients should therefore be rigorously promoted as an approach to increase treatment completion in rural settings.

The Detrimental Effect of Adversity on HIV Outcomes in the Era of Combined Anti-Retroviral Therapy

socially disadvantaged individuals with HIV experience unacceptably high rates of AIDs and death. The authors developed an adversity index to quantify the impact of demographic and psychosocial factors on HIV care. This retrospective cohort study included 431 participants with HIV on combined antiretroviral therapy between 2000 and 2005. Poor outcome was defined as progression to AIDs, death, virologic failure, or CD4 s/μl at six months. The index utilized eight demographic and psychosocial variables independently associated with poor outcome. Exposure to higher numbers of variables in the adversity index significantly increased the rates of poor outcome from 14% (exposure to no variables) to 100% (exposure to seven variables). The odds of poor outcome decreased but remained significant after adjusting for adherence-defining variables, indicating a possible mediating effect of poor adherence. Durably effective therapeutic strategies must include addressing adverse demographic and psychosocial factors affecting people living with HIV.

Perovskite-type structures with the composition La Ni x Co1–x O3（x=0.3, 0.5, 0.7） were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method. Using transitional metal elements on the lanthanum base perovskites, properties could be tuned by doping the structure. Thermogravimetric analysis（TGA） evidenced a temperature of 350 °C as the start point of the perovskite-phase formation. scanning electron microscopy（sEM） images showed the microstructure changes（grain size） of the cobalt-doped perovskite due to composition. In addition, it was shown that magnetic properties of the samples were dependent of cobalt content; experimental results pointed to the existence of disordered spins interactions, which were more evident with the decrease of cobalt content and the existence of ferromagnetic coupling among spins of the samples. These results showed the feasibility of producing a family of compounds with the desired properties, manipulating composition and therefore the microstructure.

Life-cycle Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Capture for Enhanced Oil Recovery

The development and deployment of Carbon dioxide Capture and storage （CCs） technology is a cornerstone of the Norwegian government＇s climate strategy. A number of projects are currently evaluated/planned along the Norwegian West Coast, one at Tjeldbergodden. COe from this project will be utilized in part for enhanced oil recovery in the Halten oil field, in the Norwegian sea. We study a potential design of such a system. A combined cycle power plant with a gross power output of 832 MW is combined with CO2 capture plant based on a post-combustion capture using amines as a solvent. The captured CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery （EOR）. We employ a hybrid life-cycle assessment （LCA） method to assess the environmental impacts of the system. The study focuses on the modifications and operations of the platform during EOR. We allocate the impacts connected to the capture of CO2 to electricity production, and the impacts connected to the transport and storage of CO2 to the oil produced. Our study shows a substantial reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions from power production by 80% to 75 g·（kW·h）^-1. It also indicates a reduction of the emissions associated with oil production per unit oil produced, mostly due to the increased oil production. Reductions are especially significant if the additional power demand due to EOR leads to power supply from the land.

Chromosome Elimination in Intergeneric Hybrid of <i>Oryza sativa</i>×<i>Luziola peruviana</i>

Oryza sativa and Luziola peruviana present a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 24 and basic number x = 12, confirmed by means metaphase chromosomes counts in young root tips of these species. Hybrid plants O. sativa × L. peruviana, with 2n = 24 chromosomes are originated from simple crosses and present abnormalities in the meiotic behavior, chromosomal aberrations and cytological alteration. This genetic incompatibility is caused by different factors as absence of pairing and recombination, different spindles arrangements, cytoskeleton instability, apoptosis process and chromosomal elimination, leading to micronuclei formation, unbalanced gametes and sterile pollen grains. The chromosome elimination is established as a dynamic process of stabilization of the genome that occurs during hybridization. It is a common phenomenon among intergeneric crosses and corresponds to cytoplasmic and nuclear bodies that reflect chromosomal aberrations resulting from the combination of two genomes with high genetic distance. The genomic conflict occurs in meiosis, possibly by asynchronism and cell cycle length of the genomes involved, or by time differences in replication between parental species leading to strand breaks and genomic rearrangements.

Technological advances in the first two decades of the 21^(st)century have profoundly impacted medical research in many ways,with large population cohorts,biological sample collections and datasets through biobanks becoming valued global resources to guide biomedical research,drug development,and medical ***,in order for biobanks to maximize their impact and scientific reach of their resources,they would need to act within a complex network of infrastructures and ***,different ways have emerged in which biobanks,including those for infectious diseases,can emerge as(part of)infrastructures,integrate within existing ones,or become an independent,yet an interoperable component of the existing infrastructural ***,there has been a limited understanding and study of such mechanisms to *** perspective aims to address this knowledge gap and illustrates these three high-level ways in which such infrastructures could integrate their activities and identifies the necessary key pre-conditions for doing so,while drawing from specific examples.
