FISH ASSEMBLAGE RESPONSES TO DIFFERENT SEcONDARY cHANNEL DESIGNS IN THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER,U.S.A.:A TEMPLATE FOR RIVER RESTORATION

The lower Mississippi River(LMR) has been heavily modified for multiple human purposes such as navigation, flood control, and bank stabilization. However, the LMR simultaneously supports a diverse fish fauna that includes recreational and commercial fisheries. Due to river training and diversion structures constructed during the past 80 years, the historic characteristics of the LMR have been drastically altered and have likely influenced fishes and fisheries in the system. One common restoration measure used throughout the LMR has been to "notch" wing-dike structures that close secondary(side) river channels. Dike notching allows year-round flows through secondary channels, which enhances habitat diversity and promotes biological productivity at the ecosystem scale. Although notching is presumed good for LMR fishes and other biota, few studies have examined its effects on fish assemblages. In this study, fish assemblages were sampled at seven LMR secondary channels spanning from river kilometer(rkm) 628(Louisiana-Mississippi, U.S.A.) upstream to rkm 1504(Missouri-Kentucky, U.S.A.). Four secondary channels were termed "permanent"(i.e.,with notched dikes) while three secondary channels were termed "temporary"(i.e., without notched dikes).Fishes were sampled by boat-mounted electrofishing conducted during falling and low stages from1995—1997. Fish assemblages differed between permanent and temporary secondary channels, and varied somewhat between falling and low stages. Gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum), threadfin shad(D. petenense), and white bass(Morone chrysops) demonstrated consistent preferences for low-current conditions associated with temporary secondary channels. conversely, blue catfish(Ictalurus furcatus), flathead catfish(Pylodictis olivaris), and freshwater drum(Aplodinotus grunniens) were more associated with permanent secondary channels. The influence of overcoating layers of dialkylglycerylether-β-glucosides(A)1,2O-dialkylglycerylethers(B) and arachidic acid (c20) on the fluorescence of the squaraine dye(SQ) and c20 mixed film were investigated by fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. An apparent increase in fluorescence intensity for three layer mixed film of SQ and c20 were obtained by overcoating A in comparison with the small change fluorescence intensity for SQ dye mixed film by overcoating B or c20.

Derived, still living cockroach genus cariblattoides （Blattida： Blattellidae） from the Eocene sediments of Green River in colorado, USA

cariblattoides labandeirai sp.n. from the Eocene sediments of Green River in colorado, USA bear only two plesiomorphies, but also several significant autapomorphies within the advanced and highly derived living cockroach genus. Thus, cariblattoides with extant occurrence in the caribbean and South America was historically common in the Nearctic, and represents important evidence for the occurrence of derived living genera of cockroaches -50 Ma ago. Generally, the vast majority of living genera were absent during the Palaeocene, thus the diversification of most living cockroach lineages near the Palaeocene/Eocene boundary must have been extremely rapid. Females of living c. suave, the type species, have identical （sophisticated） coloration ofpronotum, but the most related living taxa are c. piraiensis and *** from Brazil （supported by phylogenetical analysis）.

Stability analysis of the sliding process of the west slope in Buzhaoba Open-Pit Mine

To study the stability of the west slope in Buzhaoba Open-Pit Mine and determine the aging stability coefficient during slide mass development, the deformation band of the west slope and the slide mass structure of the 34,600 profile are obtained on the basis of hydrology, geology, and monitoring *** residual thrust method is utilized to calculate the stability coefficients, which are 1.225 and 1.00 under sound and transfixion conditions, respectively. According to the rock damage and fragmentation and the principle of mechanical parameter degradation, the mechanical models of the slide mass development of the hard and soft rock slopes are established. An integrated model for calculating the slope stability coefficient is built considering water, vibration, and other external factors that pertain to the structural plane damage mechanism and the generating mechanism of the sliding mass. The change curve of the stability coefficient in the slide mass development is obtained from the relevant analyses,and afterwards, the stability control measures are proposed. The analysis results indicate that in the cracking stage of the hard rock, the slope stability coefficient decreases linearly with the increase in the length Lbof the hard rock crack zone. The linear slope is positively correlated to rock cohesion c. In the transfixion stage of the soft rock, the decrease speed of the stability coefficient is positively correlated to the residual strength of the soft rock. When the slope is stable, the stability coefficient is in a quadratic-linear relationship with the decreased height Dh of the side slope and in a linear relationship with anchoring force P.

Mechanism of selective hydrolysis of alginates under hydrothermal conditions

Mechanisms of selective hydrolysis of alginates under hydrothermal conditions were investigated by comparing reactivities of sodium alginate(Na-ALG,960 ku)solutions and calcium alginate(ca-ALG)gels as *** hydrothermal conditions(150°c),hydrolysis of Na-ALG gave product molecular weights of 223,66,26 and 17 ku while those of ca-ALG gave product molecular weights of 340,102,45 and 31 ku for reaction times of 10,20,30 and 60 min,*** ratios of mannuronic acid(M)to guluronic acid(G)varied only slightly(from 1.3 to 1.2)for Na-ALG over the range of reaction times at 150°c,while ratios(M/G)for ca-ALG exhibited a remarkable decrease(from 1.1 to 0.8).Diad sequence of alginate products obtained for Na-ALG were 17%,23%,27%and 31%(GG);30%,32%,36%and 38%(MM);and 53%,46%,37%and 32%(GM+MG);while for ca-ALG they were 18%,22%,24%and 33%(GG);26%,23%,26%and 18%(MM);and 56%,54%,50%and 48%(GM+MG).Reaction mechanisms are proposed for hydrolysis of alginate solutions and alginate gels under hydrothermal conditions;de-polymerization of alginates into monomers and monomeric sequences can be controlled not only by hydrothermal conditions,but also by varying the physical state(solution,gel)of the starting materials.
