Use of the Appropriate Fabric for Cloth Face Mask: A Necessity in the Fight against COVID-19

The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on the way we perceive our world and our everyday lives. The call for the wearing of face masks as one of the ways of curbing the disease has resulted in the proliferation of cloth face masks on our markets. In the desperation to cash in on the season and make money at all costs, some manufacturers use inferior fabrics to produce face masks. Some of these fabrics do not meet the basic performance requirements of cloth face masks. This study was therefore carried out to research into the appropriate fabrics that will be suitable for the production of cloth face masks in terms of comfort, breathability and protection. To do this, 1225 participants were conveniently drawn for the study. The main research instrument employed for the study was the survey approach in which well-structured questionnaires were administered to solicit information from the participants. To determine the reliability and validity of data, the Cronbach’s Alpha test was conducted. Data were analyzed using the Stata statistical software to perform a multinomial logistic regression to estimate Odds Ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs. A multinomial logit model was constructed to determine the nominal variables. A major finding of the study was that people’s choice of fabric for cloth face masks is determined to a larger extent by their professions. The study also revealed that cotton, silk and linen possess good properties for the production of cloth face masks. Based on the findings, the study concludes that cloth face masks made from two-layered fabrics or three-layered fabrics are the best in terms of comfort and full protection of the wearer. It is recommended that the outer layer should be made from cotton and the inner layer made from linen, cotton-polyester blend or silk.

The outbreak of coronavirus has led to an increase in the demand for facemasks globally. Unavailability of appropriate polypropylene non-woven fabrics face masks as a result of inadequate supply to satisfy the growing population has brought about the manufacturing of locally fabrics masks to augment or substitute standard medical class facemasks. The study aims at analyzing airflow of these locally manufactured fabrics to determine possible means of transmitting the virus as well as establish comfort of the user of these masks. Standard polypropylene non-woven, woven and knitted fabrics were considered for the study. Air permeability test was conducted on these fabrics using Frazier Air permeability tester. Depending on the property significant variation in the textile fabrics, polypropylene non-woven is widely accepted for facial masks. Nevertheless, this study illustrates that woven and knitted fabrics have more open structures, which allow a high rate of air penetration and so may require two or three layers to prevent antimicrobial or antiviral potential.

Pseudospondias microcarpa is used in ethnomedicine to manage central nervous system *** hydroethanolic extract(PME)from the leaves of the plant has shown anxiolytic-like properties in mice anxiety ***,its effects in chronic anxiety models and possible mechanism(s)of action were not ***,the current study evaluated the anxiolytic-like mechanisms of PME in zebrafish models of *** zebrafish light dark test(LDT)and novel tank test(NTT)were employed to assess the anxiolytic-like effects of PME(0.1,0.3,1.0 mg mL^(−1)),fluox-etine(3×10^(−5)mg mL^(−1))and diazepam(1.5×10^(−7)mg mL^(−1)).The chronic unpredictable stress(CUS)test was used to further evaluate the extract’s anxiolytic-like *** potential mechanisms of anxiolytic action of the extract was evaluated after pre-treated with flumazenil,granisetron,methysergide,or pizotifen,all at 1×10^(−3)mg mL^(−1).The extract significantly decreased anxiety behaviours in the NT and LD *** observed effects of the extract were however counteracted by flumazenil,granisetron,methysergide and pizotifen *** addition,PME treatment significantly reversed CUS-induced anxiety behaviours in *** show that PME possesses anxiolytic-like effects possibly through interaction with serotonergic and gamma-aminobutyric acid mediated pathways.

Provider Adherence to Malaria Test, Treat and Track Policy in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region of Ghana

Background: Malaria is a disease of public health concern, which causes significant mortality and morbidity in the tropics, particularly in Africa. Ghana as a country has been implementing a combination of preventive and curative interventions as outlined in the Strategic Plan for Malaria Control in Ghana, 2014-2020. Additionally, Ghana subscribes to sub-regional and global initiatives such as the test, treat and track (T3) initiative which seeks to ensure that every suspected malaria case is tested, every case tested positive is treated with the recommended quality-assured antimalarial medicine, and every case treated with antimalarial is followed up to ensure complete parasite clearance. However, the implementation of this policy is a challenge, hence the need to study provider adherence to the testing, treating, and tracking. Materials and method: The study is cross-sectional in nature and data for this research was collected from consulting room registers, patients’ folders, the District Health Information Management System and a structured questionnaire designed to interview healthcare providers. The data was exported into Stata for cleaning and analysis. The results of the study were presented in the form of statistical charts and tables. Results: The study revealed that generally, provider adherence to the T3 policy was encouraging in the Binduri district, and a high level of testing (100%) of suspected malaria cases eliminated the practice of presumptive treatment. However, tracking of patients (68.2%) was not as high as testing and treatment which was revealed by the number asked to return for a review during the folder review. Conclusion: Significant progress in clinicians’ adherence to policy on malaria case management (T3) in the Binduri District. Continued training and facilitative supervision are essential to sustain gains and close existing gaps in clinicians’ adherence to malaria case management policy.

Distal radius fracture is the most common fracture site of the human skeleton[1]and often occurs in young people resulting from high energy injury caused by severe ***,complex distal radial intra-articular fractures(AO type C3)are relatively rare and account for about 5%of all distal radius fractures.[2]Fracture comminution at the joint surface is the primary manifestation of these fractures,followed by avulsion of the bone fragments with displacement seen at both the metacarpal and ulnar *** of these displaced and unstable fractures remains a *** nature of the articular surface fracture indicates the use of either the open or close reduction *** protocols focus on extra-articular reduction and restoration of radial length,maintaining the volar tilt.[3,4]It has been noted that incongruity of the intra-articular distal radius fracture is relevant to the development of arthritis.[5,6]

Roles of commodity futures derivatives and financial crises in global food security

Commodity futures have been largely blamed for the price hikes in 2007/mid-2008 and 2010/2011 and the decreased food security around the world,especially in less developed *** still exist serious disagreements between most economists and policymakers as to whether this is the *** run time-series regressions for all samples and subsamples for lower-income,middle-income,and high-income countries *** empirical results show that commodity futures have a more significant negative impact on food security in low-income countries than in middle-income and high-income *** crises,however,have a significant impact on food security in all the regional divisions as a whole and are seen to exasperate the negative effect of some of the commodity futures on food *** also find evidence that a certain degree of speculation in some commodities stabilises prices of those commodities as expected by *** results have important policy implications as policymakers must control these speculations but should also be careful not to overregulate the market.

Right Ulnar Reconstruction after Sequestrectomy by Non-Vascularized Fibular Transfer in a Girl of Three Years

Chronic osteomyelitis is serious because of the orthopedic sequels that they could cause. Extended diaphyseal sequestrations could cause bone loss and their management is delicate. Here we report a case of right ulnar diaphyseal reconstruction by non-vascularized fibula transfer. This was a three-year-old girl, non-sickle cell, who had chronic osteomyelitis of the right ulna. The evolution was towards an almost total ulnar diaphyseal sequestration with externalization of the distal extremity. The removal of this large sequestrum occurred almost spontaneously, leaving a significant bone loss over a length of about 6 cm. Secondarily, we reconstructed the right ulnar diaphysis by transfer of a free non-vascularized graft of the left fibula, maintained by a pin. The follow up was favorable with almost complete recovery of prono-supination. Fibular ossification has evolved as well and we did not notice any complications at the graft collection site. Non-vascularized fibula graft transfer is a useful therapeutic option in the management of significant bone defects secondary to chronic osteomyelitis of one of the two forearm bones.

Epidemiological Aspects of Diseases Seen in Pediatric Surgery Consultation at the Kara Teaching Hospital

Background: Pediatric surgery in developing countries faces serious problems of inadequate infrastructures and equipment. Since July 2019, a new department was created in the north of Togo. It is in this context that this study is initiated, with the aim of taking stock of the epidemiological distribution of pediatric surgical diseases. Material and methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive study over a period of eighteen months, from October 30, 2019 to April 30, 2021. It took place in the pediatric surgery department of the Kara teaching hospital. It concerns pathologies seen at the consultation in the department collected in consultation register. Epidemiological parameters were studied. Results: In eighteen (18) months, two hundred and fifty-nine children, were seen in pediatric surgery consultation at the Kara Teaching Hospital. The annual frequency of consultations was 172.66. The monthly frequency was 14.39. The average age of the children was 4.56 years with extremes of 2 days and 15 years. There were 194 boys (74.90%) and 65 girls (25.10%). At the consultation, whatever the reason, the examination was normal in 17 children and 242 children had abnormalities. Two hundred and twelve children (81.85%) had each one abnormality and 30 children (11.58%) had each at least two. A total of 298 diseases were reported in the 242 children. These were 218 congenital diseases (73.15%) dominated by urological abnormalities with 37.16% of cases and 80 acquired diseases (26.85%).
