Blood-based mierorNA （mirNA） signatures as biomar.e.s have been repor.e. for various pathologies, including cancer, neurological disor.e.s, cardiovascular diseases, and also infections. The regulatory mechanism behind respective mirNA patterns is only partially understood. Moreover, ＂preser.e.＂ mirNAs, i.e., mirNAs that are not dysregulated in any disease, and their biological impact have been explored to a very limited extent. We set out to systematically determine their role in regulatory networks by defining groups of highly-dysregulated mirNAs that contribute to a disease signature as opposed to preser.e. housekeeping mirNAs. We further determined preferential tar.e.s and pathways of both dysregulated and preser.e. mirNAs by computing multi-layer networks, which were compared between housekeeping and dysregulated mirNAs. Of 848 mirNAs examined across 1049 blood samples, 8 potential housekeepers showed very limited expression variations, while 20 mirNAs showed highly-dysregulated expression throughout the investigated blood samples. Our approach provides important insights into mirNAs and their role in regulatory networks. The methodology can be applied to systematically investigate the differences in tar.e. genes and pathways of arbitrary mirNA sets.

Impact cratering is one of the fundamental processes in the formation of the earth and our planetary system, as reflected, for.e.ample in the surfaces of Mars and the Moon. The earth has been covered by a comparable number of impact scars, but due to active geological processes, weathering, sea floor spreading etc, the number of preser.e. and recognized impact craters on the earth are limited. The study of impact structures is consequently of great importance in our understanding of the formation of the earth and the planets, and one way we directly, on the earth, can study planetary geology. The Nordic-Baltic area have about thirty confir.e. impact structures which makes it one of the most densely crater-populated terrains on earth. The high density of identified craters is due to the level of research activity, coupled with a deterministic view of what we look for. In spite of these results, many Nordic structures are poorly understood due to the lack of 3D-geophysical interpretations, isotopeor other dating efforts and better knowledge of the amount of erosion and subsequent tectonic modifications. The Nordic and Baltic impact community is closely collaborating in several impact-related projects and the many researchers （about forty） and PhD students （some seventeen） promise that this level will continue for many more years. The main topics of research include geological, geophysical and geochemical studies in combination with modeling and impact experiments. Moreover, the Nordic and Baltic crust contains some hundred suspect structures which call for detailed analysis to define their origin. New advanced methods of analyzing geophysical information in combination with detailed geochemical analyses and numerical modeling will be the future basic occupation of the impact scientists of the region. emerging antibiotic resistance is a major global health threat. The analysis of nucleic acid sequences linked to susceptibility phenotypes facilitates the study of genetic antibiotic resistance determinants to inform molecular diagnostics and drug development. We collected genetic data (11,087 newly-sequenced whole genomes) and culture-based resistance profiles (10,991 out of the 11,087 isolates comprehensively tested against 22 antibiotics in total) of clinical isolates including 18 main species spanning a time period of 30 years. Species and drug specific resistance patterns were obser.e. including increased resistance rates for Acinetobacter baumannii to carbapenems and for.e.cherichia coli to fluoroquinolones. Species-level pan-genomes were constructed to reflect the genetic repertoire of the respective species,including conser.e. essential genes and known resis-tance factors. Integrating phenotypes and genotypes through species-level pan-genomes allowed to infer gene–drug resistance associations using statistical testing. Thanks to the development of metallographic and optical techniques, the quantitative characterisation of the geometry of rough surfaces has become very useful in practical applications. Today, numerous different methods are available for determining thr.e.dimensional co- ordinates, linear profiles or height contours to a reasonable degr.e.of accuracy and within an acceptable time frame, and for.e.aluating such data. In this article, the use of such techniques in the field of fractography is demonstrated with reference to a number of case studies dealt with by the author' s own team, supplemented by several examples from other research groups. The following examples are discussed:In a ceramic material different fracture paths were discer.e. cor.e.ponding to different test *** metals,it was shown that hoth the sub-critical and supercritical propagation of cracks occur.e. dalong the same *** measurements of the proportion of fracture surfaces occurring along and in the various different phases present and the depth of dimples occurring during ductile fracture in the binder phase,the fracture energy of eC-Co-hard alloys with different cobalt contents and tungsten carbide grain sizes was calculated and found to be in excellent agr.e.ent with actual experimental *** the case of ceramic fibre-aluminium matrix cpmposite materials,by measuring the beight distribution of the positions of fracture of the fibres,the load transfer in the region of the fracture surface was *** this information a model was developed which explains the significant variation in strength of these materials Finally,a model was developed for metallic materials using which,from the experimentally determined distributions of the height and inclination of the fracture facets,the stress intensity of roughness induced crack closing could he accurately predicted.

目的探讨抗氧化剂调节内皮细胞表面的粘附分子ICAM-1表达的分子生物学机制。方法内皮细胞表面的粘附分子表达用细胞eLISA方法测定,内皮细胞NF-kB的活性用电泳迁移率分析测定。结果 PDTC,DCI和chrysin能明显抑制ICAM-1的表达。Probucol仅在低浓度时对ICAM-1有轻微抑制作用。电泳迁移率分析结果,只有PDTC对NF-kB的活性有抑制作用,其它三种抗氧化药无效。结论这几种抗氧化药抑制内皮细胞表面粘附分子的表达与它们对核转录因子NF-kB的作用并无必然的联系。

我们怀着浓厚的兴趣读了Laack和Hossfeld所写的关于非小细胞性肺癌(NSCLC)病人治疗的综述性文章。目前这样全面的综述并不多见。不过,该文忽视了一篇依我们看来是很重要的研究报道,即Car.e.al等所写的与该文同一月发表,也是关于晚期NSCLC治疗的研究报道。在该研究中意大利的同道们采用半合成的长春碱类新药Vinorellbin对70岁和更年老的晚期NSCLC病人进行单种药物化疗。
