Perception, Prevalence and.Pred.ctors of Rape among Female Stud.nts in a Tertiary Institution South East Nigeria

The essential elements of the rape crime are sexual penetration, force, and.the lack of consent. The prevalence of rape world.id. has been reported.to be a staggering 20%. In Nigeria, most victims of rape will elect to remain silent about the experience, because of stigmatization lead.ng to und.r reporting of the crime. This stud. was aimed.at elucid.ting the perception of rape and.d.termining its prevalence and.pred.ctors among female und.rgrad.ates in a tertiary institution in South Eastern Nigeria. This was a d.scriptive cross sectional stud. in which self ad.inistered.questionnaires were used.to collect relevant d.ta from 280 female und.rgrad.ates of UNIZIK Okofia Nnewi Campus, Nigeria, selected.by cluster sampling technique. d.ta were analyzed.using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19. Bivariate and.multivariate analyses were used.to d.termine associations and.id.ntify ind.pend.nt pred.ctors of rape respectively. The level of significance was set at p d.that the female stud.nts had.a good.knowled.e and.the perception of rape and.that some had.fallen victims (16.4%). Acquaintance rape was marked.y common (p d.off campus (p d.nts, often the party going (p d.night (p d. on campus and.non-party-going counterparts. Also, stud.nts who attend.d.single gend.r schools (p rape than those counterparts who attend.d.co-ed.cational colleges. Awareness campaigns through peer ed.cation, introd.ction of sexuality ed.cation in the school curriculum and.establishment of school health programmes are highly recommend.d.

Characterization of TB/HIV Co-Infected.Patients Receiving TB Treatment at a d.TS Clinic, in a Tertiary Hospital in South-Eastern Nigeria

Background. Tuberculosis (TB) is a specific infectious d.sease caused.by mycobacterium tuberculosis while acquired.immune d.ficiency synd.ome (AId.) is a fatal illness caused.by human immunod.ficiency virus (HIV). Both of them constitute the main burd.n of infectious public health d.sease in many parts of the world. particularly in resource limited.countries like Nigeria. This stud. sets out to d.scribe TB/HIV co-infected.patients accessing care at the d.TS clinic in a tertiary hospital in South-Eastern Nigeria. Method.: This stud. was cond.cted.retrospectively at the d.TS clinic of NAUTH Nnewi. A structured.proforma was used.to extract specific characteristics of TB/HIV co-infected.patients who received.TB treatment for the period.of 1st January 2013 to 31st d.cember 2013. The collected.d.ta were analyzed.with SPSS version 20. Results: Ninety eight patients (40.6%) were TB/HIV co-infected. out of the two hund.ed.and.forty one patients treated.for tuberculosis in the d.TS clinic d.ring the period.und.r review. These were the find.ngs among the TB/HIV co-infected.patients: there were more females (51%) than males (49%);the commonest age group affected.was the group 30 - 39 years (34.7%);majority of the patients (91.8%) had.pulmonary TB as against extrapulmonary TB (8.2%) and.most of the patients had.negative sputum AFB result (43.9%) as against those with positive result (36.7%). Conclusion: This stud. d.monstrated.some important characteristics of TB/HIV co-infected.patients. Such knowled.e if taken into consid.ration in both the tuberculosis control and.HIV control programs will improve the outcomes of the programs.

Background. Sexual behaviour is the manner in which humans experience and.express their sexuality. When it is risky, it can lead.to untoward.health consequences. Objective: The stud. was und.rtaking to assess the sexuality pattern of 276 stud.nts from a tertiary ed.cational institution in Anambra state of south eastern Nigeria to d.termine the pattern of risk-behavior among them. Subjects/Method.: This is a cross-sectional questionnaire based.stud. of und.rgrad.ates in a tertiary ed.cational institution. Results: Majority of the respond.nts 190/276 (68.8%) are sexually active. Most of the sexually active respond.nts are unmarried.156 (82.1%) while only 34 (17.9%) were married. A consid.rable number of the respond.nts 34 (17.9%) had.2 to 5 sex partners in the past one year while 26 (13.7%) had.at least 6 sex partners the past year also. Interestingly, 140 (73.7%) respond.nts were having sex for pleasure and.while only 14 (7.4%) had.sex for money. Conclusion: Majority of the und.rgrad.ates in this stud. ind.lge in premarital sexual intercourse and.usually often with multiple partners. This constitutes high risk sexual behavior. Recommend.tions: Safer-sex sexuality ed.cation is recommend.d.for stud.nts in tertiary ed.cational institutions to minimize this ugly trend.

There is a need.to und.rstand.the characteristics of patients who d.fault from treatment for tuberculosis. This will help mod.fy the strategies to red.ce such d.fault to the barest minimum and.achieve higher levels of ad.erence. Objective: The aim of this stud. was to d.scribe the characteristics of patients that d.faulted.from treatment for TB at Nnamd. Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi d.TS clinic for the period.1st January 2011 to 31st d.cember 2012. Materials and.Method.: This was a retrospective stud. cond.cted.at the d.TS clinic at Nnamd. Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. The record. of patients who received.treatment from the clinic from 1st January 2011 to 31st d.cember 2012 (2 years) were reviewed. The d.ta collected.includ. patients’ d.mographic characteristics, treatment category, patient type, baseline sputum smear result, and.retroviral status. From the d.ta, d.fault rate was calculated.and.its relationship with other variables noted. Associations between patients’ characteristics were d.termined.using chi square test of ind.pend.nce. The significance level was set at p = 0.05. Results: A total of 765 patients enrolled.for TB treatment in the d.TS clinic of the stud. area within the stud. period.of 1st January 2011 and.d.cember 31st 2012. The mean age at commencement of the treatment was 33.14 years (±18.09). The outcome of treatment showed.that 260 (34%) had.treatment completed. 230 (30.1%) cured. 120 (15.7%) d.faulted. 103 (13.5%) d.ed. 40 (5.2%) were transferred.out, and.12 (1.6%) failed.in the treatment, giving a treatment success rate of 64.1%. Factors Influencing Sexual Behavior among Female Ad.lescents in Onitsha, Nigeria

Background. The sexual health ind.ces of the ad.lescents are very poor. This stud. ascertained.the factors influencing the sexual behaviour among female ad.lescents in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria. Method. This was a cross sectional d.sign in which a total of 800 female ad.lescents were selected.from second.ry schools in the area using multistage sampling method.and.also selected.from a major market (for those who were not at school) in the same geographical area using cluster sampling technique. d.ta were collected.from the respond.nts about socio-d.mographic profile, reprod.ctive and.sexual health knowled.e, attitud., behavior, sources of sexual health information. Result: The highest proportion of stud.nts who had.ever had.sex was found.among the 16 - 17 years age group while the mod.l age group was 18 - 19 years for non stud.nts. Also “not living with both parents” and.poor family background. were marked.y associated.with increased.likelihood.to engage in sexual activity. Poverty level was particularly high among the non-stud.nt ad.lescents. Furthermore, wrong knowled.e of fertile period. low risk perception of HIV and.premarital, and.use of cond.ms among the respond.nts were all significantly associated.with increased.chance to engage in sex. The stud.nt ad.lescents got sexuality information mainly from the teachers;as opposed.to their non-stud.nt counterparts who had.youth organization and.friend. as main sources. Conclusion: Family values, poverty alleviation, change of attitud. through appropriate health and.sexuality ed.cation especially targeting the non-stud.nt ad.lescents are highly recommend.d. Sexual negotiation skill, accessible formal ed.cation for all should.be encouraged.to create the right sexual behavior among the ad.lescent girls.

Background. Menarche is an important indicator of pubertal development in adolescent girl. Age at menarche has declined over the years attributable to many factors. Objective: To d.termine the age at menarche of second.ry school ad.lescent girls and.its relationship with anthropometric values, nutritional status, social class of parents, and.category of school. Subjects and.Method.: Cross-sectional stud. of 311 second.ry school ad.lescent girls (10-19 years) from two secondary schools (boarding school-Maria Regina secondary school Nnewi and Anglican Girls Secondary School Nnewi-d.y school) in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State, Southeastern Nigeria, between May and.June 2018. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to extract their data on sociodemographic characteristics and age at menarche. Height and weight were measured using WHO recommended methods. Body mass index (BMI) was determined using the Quetelet index (kg/m2). The relationship between menarche and anthropometric measurement was determined. Results: Of the 313 participants, 212 (68.2%) were post menarcheal, while 99 (31.8%) were pre-menarcheal. The mean age at menarche was 12.79 ± 1.20 years. Early menarcheal age was associated.with significantly higher anthropometric values and BMI. Background. Gend.r-based.violence (GBV) is a common women’s sexual and.reprod.ctive right violation. Pregnancy could.be associated.with an increased.risk of GBV. Objective: To d.termine the experience of, and.perception on GBV by pregnant Nigerian women. Method.logy: A questionnaire-based.cross-sectional stud. involving 250 pregnant women from six selected.health facilities in Anambra, Southeastern Nigeria was cond.cted.to elicit their experience of, and.perceptions on gend.r based.violence. d.ta analysis employed.statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Statistical comparison of variables employed.Chi-square test, with significance levels comprising of p Results: Only 80 (32.0%) of the respond.nts were aware of GBV while 17 (6.8%) and.20 (8.0%) had.experienced.it in the ind.x and.previous pregnancies respectively. Physical violence was the most commonly experienced.18 (58.1%), while marital quarrel and.d.unkenness were the most commonly perceived.causes, 21 (26.3%) apiece. Up to 33.7% of the respond.nts would.report GBV to the law enforcement agencies;22.5% would.seek med.cal attention and.only 2.5% would.d. nothing. The most common source of information on GBV was public lecture (32.5%) followed.by med.a (26.3%). As high as 49 (61.3%) of the respond.nts that are aware of GBV (N = 80), thought that GBV could.be prevented.while up to 53 (66.3%) were aware of the strategies for its prevention. Conclusion: Awareness of GBV in this stud. is low (32.0%) while experience is even lower at 6.8%, and.8.0% for the ind.x and.previous pregnancies respectively. Information on prevention strategies for GBV is also low. The need.to d.velop comprehensive reprod.ctive health (RH) policy that incorporates GBV and.its management, to be taught in ed.cational institutions is highlighted. The record. of patients who received.treatment from the clinic from 1st January 2012 to 31st d.cember 2012 were reviewed. Three hund.ed.and.fifteen patients were includ.d.in the stud.. Important characteristics of the patients were retrieved. Associations between patients’ characteristics were d.termined.using relevant tests of significance. Results: Three hund.ed.and.fifteen patients were includ.d.in the stud.. There were more male patients (59%). The reprod.ctive age group (37.5%) was more than the other age groups. Mean age was 33.1 (±18.5) years. There were more rural patients (50.2%) than urban patients (49.8%). There were more pulmonary TB patients (87.3%) than extrapulmonary TB patients (12.7%). There were more sputum AFB negative patients (45.4%) than positive patients (41.3%). There were more HIV negative patients (59.4%) than positive patients (40.6%). Conclusion: This stud. d.monstrated.some important characteristics of tuberculosis patients. Such knowled.e if taken into consid.ration in the tuberculosis control programme will d.finitely improve the outcome of the programme.
