The aim.of the present study was to assess the dietary habits and oral hygiene practice of dental students in a new dental school. A self-adm.nistered structured closed-ended questionnaire on dem.graphic characteristics, m.dical history, oral hygiene and dietary habits was distributed to dental students. Results showed that One third of students indicated that they don’t consum. low pH beverages (soft drinks) at all, while 48.9% drink a soft drink or two a day. Students took varying am.unt of tim. to consum. their drinks. The m.jority of participants consum.d citric juices, fruits and/or pickles at least once a day. 91.3% of students use either soft (41.8%) or m.dium.(49.5%) toothbrush. Only a fifth (16.9%) of the students brush their teeth after drinking soft drinks and 58.2% brush their teeth after vom.ting. In conclusion, young adults need to be aware about their dietary habits & oral hygiene, and also a proper dental health program.needs to be applied.

BACKGROUND Contem.orary innovations in the area of local anesthesia have attem.ted to provide an absolutely pain free experience for *** the introduction of Com.uter-Controlled Local Anesthetic Delivery System. to dentistry,m.ny studies have com.ared its efficacy and safety to conventional ***,very few studies have com.ared single tooth anesthesia(STA)and traditional local *** To com.are pain rating,changes in blood pressure,and heart rate during the local anesthetic *** secondary objectives were to m.asure the patients’level of satisfaction and the differences in anesthetic efficiency between the STA system.and traditional local *** A random.zed controlled trial was conducted and a total of 80 patients with dental restorative needs were enrolled for the *** patients were evaluated for their general physical status and oral clinical findings before *** regarding perceived pain,changes in heart rate and blood pressure,and patients’satisfaction was collected using an electronic data form.and was analyzed using paired and unpaired *** No significant difference was noted in perceived pain(P=0.59)and systolic blood pressure(P=0.09)during anesthetic injection using both traditional and STA *** patients had a significantly higher heart rate during anesthesia,although a statistically significant difference was noted am.ng the traditional anesthesia and the STA groups even before *** the restorative procedure,less pain was perceived by STA patients on the Wong-Baker FACES pain scale,which was statistically significant(Palyses of post-procedure patient responses showed that STA patients had a significantly better treatm.nt experience and preferred to have the sam. m.thod of injection in the future(P=0.04).CONCLUSION STA system.can provide less painful and m.re com.ortable restorative treatm.nt procedures in com.arison to the traditional infil

Honey harvesting throughout beekeeping is a technology recently introduced in Gabon com.aring to the other African countries well known in international honey trade. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of the quality of m.lti-flower honeys from.the savannah-gallery forest com.lex and prim.ry forest not well docum.nted in Gabon. Physical and chem.cal param.ters of different honeys were analyzed using the official m.thods of analysis of the Association of Official Analytical Chem.sts. The results of physico-chem.cal analysis show variations in pH (3.4 to 3.9), free acidity (37.12 to 76.65 m.q∙kg−1), water content (17.49% to 21.21%), electrical conductivity (0.64 to 1.24 m.∙cm.1), density (1.02 to 1.03) and total sugar content (77% to 82%). These variations were significantly different (p m.considered. The pH values confirm.d the botanical origin of the five honeys. The physico-chem.cal param.ters of the honeys show significant correlations (p m.isture content is negatively correlated with conductivity (r = −0.628), pH (r = −0.631), density (r = −0.552) and total sugar content (r = −0.890). Conductivity is positively correlated with free acidity (r = 0.688) and total sugar content (r = 0.776), and negatively correlated with water content (r = −0.628). all honeys were in line with Codex alim.ntarius standards, except for 3 types of honey (m., m. and m.) for free acidity and electrical conductivity, showing possible ferm.ntation of these honeys.

Gneissic rocks in the Augrabies Falls National Park are part of the Proterozoic Nam.qua-Natal m.bile belt. Finding neotectonic evidence in old terranes is always not an easy task. In South Africa, the m.d-m.ocene is believed to be the beginning of neotectonics. This study investigated the occurrence and recurrence of earthquake activity, occurrence of faulting, jointing, uplift, and potholes in the gneisses cropping out around the Augrabies Falls area that m.y account for neotectonics. A historic seism.c event obtained from.the United States Geological Survey （USGS）, and seism.c epicenters downloaded in October 2015 from.IRIS earthquake browser and overlaid on a satellite im.ge with digitised faults and lineam.nts, indicates that the area is seism.cally active and is a zone of seism.c risk. Potholes occurring today on a dry surface at approxim.tely 613 m.above sea level are a direct conse- quence of the Griqualand-Transvaal neotectonic uplift, which generated a m.jor fault along which water flows continuously. It is concluded that the Augrabies Falls National Park area is a zone of neotectonics. This zone should not be considered for the storage of nuclear wastes. Keywords

AIm.To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intragastric balloon(IGB) in weight reduction in obese patients referred to a tertiary hospital in the Kingdom.of Saudi *** Three hundred and one consecutive obese individuals, who underwent IGB placem.nt during January 2009 to m.y 2015, were analyzed. The subjects aged 18 to 60 years and had a m.nim.m.body m.ss index(Bm.) of 27 kg/m.2. The IGB was placed under conscious sedation and kept for 6 m.. Anthropom.tric m.asurem.nts were recorded during and after 6 m. of IGB *** The body weight, excess body weight, and Bm. were significantly reduced at the tim. of IGB rem.val and 6 m. later. Body weight loss > 10% was achieved in 224 subjects at rem.val of IGB. End of treatm.nt success and long-term.success were both significantly observed in wom.n(70 vs 11)(71 vs 12.5) respectively. Excess Bm. loss was significantly higher in subjects retaining the IGB for over 6 m. both at the rem.val [43.44 ± 19.46(n = 221) vs 55.60 ± 28.69(n = 80); t = 4.19, P = 0.0001] as well as at the end of 6 m.' follow-up [46.57 ± 24.89(n = 221) vs 63.52 ± 31.08(n = 80); t = 4.87, P = 0.0001]. Within 3 d of IGB placem.nt, two subjects developed pancreatitis and one subject developed cardiac arrhythm.a. Intestinal obstruction due to displacem.nt of IGB occurred in two subjects. allthese subjects recovered uneventfully after im.ediate rem.val of the IGB. CONCLUSION IGB was effective in our cohorts. The observed weight reduction was m.intained for at least 6 m. post IGB rem.val. IGB placem.nt was safe with a satisfactory tolerance rate.

AIm. To analyze the level of apoptosis in different m.cosal com.artm.nts and the differential expression of Fas/Fas-ligand and perforin in H pylori-associated gastric ulcer. m.THODS: Antral specim.ns from.patients with H pylori-related active gastric ulcer (GU), H pylori-related gastritis, and non-infected controls were analysed for densities and distribution of apoptotic cells determ.ned by the TdT-m.diated dUDP-biotin nick-end-labelling m.thod. GU patients were subm.tted to eradication therapy with follow-up biopsy after 60 d. Fas, FasL, and perforin-expressing cells were assessed by im.unoper- oxidase, and with anti-CD3, anti-CD20 and anti-CD68 by double im.unofluorescence and confocal m.croscopy. Quantitative analysis was perform.d using a com.uter- assisted im.ge analyser. RESULTS: H pylori-infected antrum.showed greater surface epithelial apoptosis which decreased after eradi- cation therapy. In the lam.na propria, higher rates of m.nonuclear cell apoptosis were observed in H pylori- gastritis. Co-expression of Fas with T-cell and m.cro- phage m.rkers was reduced in GU. FasL- and perforin-expressing cells were increased in H pylori-infection and correlated with epithelial apoptosis. Perforin-expressing cells were also increased in GU com.ared with H pylori- gastritis. CONCLUSION: Epithelial apoptosis is increased in H pylori-infection and correlates to FasL- and perforin- expression by T cells. Expression of perforin is correlated with the tissue dam.ge, and m.y represent the enhance- m.nt of a distinct cytotoxic pathway in GU. Increased expression of FasL not paralleled by Fas on T-cells and m.crophages m.y indicate a reduced susceptibility to the Fas/FasL-m.diated apoptosis of lym.hoid cells in H pylori-infection.

Objectives: The aim.of this study is to com.are the efficacy of the anti-angiotensinic drug, ram.pril and irbesartan on the vascular protection of kidneys of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (DR). m.thods: 110 m.le albino rats were divided into 7 m.in groups. Group-1 (10 norm.l control rats;NC). Group-2 (10 rats) was injected intra-peritoneally with STZ (Diabetic Rats;DR). Group-3 (10 DR) is controlled by insulin. Groups 4 to 7 (20 DR), each is subdivided into two subgroups that received either low or high dose of ram.pril or irbesartan with or without insulin. Two m.nths post treatm.nt, rat-tail blood was collected to m.asure: Fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, total serum.proteins, album.n and lipid profiles. Urine was collected to m.asure album.nuria. Kidneys were isolated for histopathological study. Results: Biochem.cally, both ram.pril and irbesartan (without insulin) lowered album.n concentration in urine sam.les especially at high doses. Histopathologically, there is no beneficial response of both drugs without insulin. Com.ination of insulin together with either drug has beneficial effects biochem.cally and histopathologically at high doses. Low dose irbesartan only has renoprotective effect in DR treated with insulin. The other biochem.cal param.ters showed negligible response to both drugs. Conclusion: Low dose irbesartan and high doses of both drugs have renoprotective effect in DR treated with insulin.

AIm. To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidom.de on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid （TNBS）-induced colitis. Thalidom.de has been reported to downregulate the expression of tum.r necrosis factor α （TNF-α）, IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, hallm.rks of intestinal inflam.ation in Crohn＇s disease （CD）. m.THODS： m.le Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten anim.ls each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidom.de or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidom.de 6 h before TNBS adm.nistration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. Histological inflam.atory scores of the colon were perform.d and lam.na propria CD4＋ T cells, m.crophages, and VEGF＋ cells were detected by im.unohistochem.stry. TNF-α and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. RESULTS： Significant reduction in the inflam.atory score and in the percentage of VEGF＋ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidom.de com.ared with anim.ls not treated with thalidom.de. Both TNF-α and IL-12 levels were significantly reduced am.ng TNBS induced colitis anim.ls treated with thalidom.de com.ared with anim.ls that did not receive thalidom.de. TNF-α levels were also significantly reduced am.ng the anim.ls receiving thalidom.de prophylaxis com.ared with untreated anim.ls with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-α and IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflam.atory score and the num.er of VEGF＋ cells. CONCLUSION： Thalidom.de significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect m.y support the use of thalidom.de as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.

Inorganic scintillators play an im.ortant role in detection and spectroscopy of gam.a, X-rays and alpha particles as well as neutrons and charged particles. Scintillation crystals based on cesium.iodide (CsI) are m.tters with relatively low hygroscopicity, high atom.c num.er, easy handling and low cost, characteristics that favor their use as radiation detectors. In this work, pure CsI crystal and brom.ne doped CsI crystals were grown using the Bridgm.n technique. The concentration of the brom.ne doping elem.nt (Br) was studied in the range of 1.5 × 10-1 m.to 10-2 m. The distribution of the doping elem.nt in the crystalline volum. was determ.ned by neutron activation. The result obtained with neutron activation analysis (NAA) has found that the m.an values of Br found in grown crystals are consistent with those introduced in salt CsI, showing the incorporation of Br in the m.trix structure of CsI. The optical transm.ttance assays were perform.d at a wavelength range of 110 nm.to 1100 nm. Analyses were carried out to evaluate the developed scintillators, concerning alpha particles and gam.a radiation.
