Effect of activation agents on the surface chemical properties and desulphurization performance of activated carbon

Flue gas pollution is a serious environmental problem that needs to be solved for the sustainable development of *** surface chemical properties of carbon have great influence on its desulphurization performance.A series of activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using HNO3,H2O2,NH3·H2O and steam as activation agents with the aim to introduce functional groups to carbon surface in the ACs preparation *** ACs were physically and chemically characterized by iodine and SO2 adsorption,ultimate analysis,Boehm titration,and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR).Results showed that the iodine number and desulphurization capacity of NH3·H2O activated carbon (AC-NH3) increase with both activation time,and its desulphurization capacity also increases with the concentration of activation ***,HNO3 activated carbon (AC-HNO3) and H2O2 activated carbon (AC-H2O2) exhibit more complex *** their iodine numbers increase monotonously with activation *** with steam activated AC (AC-H2O),the nitrogen content increases 0.232% in AC-NH3 and 0.077% in *** amount of total basic site on AC-HNO3 is 0.19 mmol·g-1 higher than that on AC-H2O.H2O2 activation introduces an additional 0.08 mmol·g-1 carboxyl groups to AC surface than that introduced by steam *** desulphurization capacity of ACs in simulate flue gas desulphurization decreases as follows: AC-NH3 > AC-HNO3 > AC-H2O2 > *** sequence is in accord with the SO2 catalytic oxidation/oxidation ratio in the absence of oxygen and the oxidation property reflected by *** the presence of oxygen,all adsorbed SO2 on ACs can be oxidized into *** desulphurization capacity increases differently according to the activation agents;the desulphurization capacity of AC-NH3 and AC-HNO3 improves by 4.8 times,yet AC-H2O increases only by 2.62 as compared with the desulphurization of corresponding ACs in absence of oxygen.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO IMPINGEMENT JETS IN CYLINDRICAL CHAMBER

Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) is used for studying the effects of various parameters of impingement jets in cylindrical chamber (IJCC), such as d/D, H/d, γ (momentum ratio) and Re, on flow pattern, as well as those on turbulence intensity. Experimental results show that turbulence intensity is enhanced with decrease of II/d and/ or increase of d/D; and turbulence intensity approaches to a maximum as T=1. Re imposes a quite complicated in- fluence. In case the jet velocity remains unchanged, turbulence intensities might keep almost constant when Re's vary even a magnitude of order.

CONTROLLED/"LIVING" RADICAL POLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE IN AN AQUEOUS DISPERSION SYSTEM

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene catalyzed by cuprous (CuX)/1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) and CuX/CuX2/Phen was conducted in an aqueous dispersed system. A stable latex was obtained by using ionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfonate (SLS) or composite surfactants, such as SLS/polyoxyethylene nonyl phenyl ether (OP-10), SLS/hexadecanol and SLS/OP-10/hexadecanol, Among which SLS and SLS/OP-10/hexadecanol systems established better dispersed effect during the polymerization, It was found that Phen was a more suitable ligand than N,N,N',N',N'-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) to maintain an appropriate equilibrium of the activator Cu(I) and the deactivator Cu(II) between the organic phase and the water phase, The effect of several initiators (such as EBiB, CCl4 and 1-PEBr) and the temperature on such a kind of ATRP system was also observed. The number-average molar mass (M-n) of polystyrene (PS) increased with the conversion and the molar mass distribution (M-w/M-n) remained narrow. These experimental data show that the polymerization could be controlled except for the quick increase of monomer conversion and the number-average molar mass of PS in the initial stage of polymerization. Furthermore, the initiator efficiency was found to be low (similar to57%) in CuX/Phen catalyzed system. To overcome this problem, Cu(II)X-2 (20 mol%-50 mol% based on CuX) was introduced into the polymerization system. In this case, higher initiator efficiency (60%-90%), low M-w/M-n of PS (as low as 1.08) were achieved and the molar masses of the PS fit with the theoretical ones.

The Preparation and Application of two New Types of Oxazaborolidines

Two new type of 1,3,2-oxazaborolidines were prepared from (Is,2s)-2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-propane-1-3-diol and were used as catalyst in the asymmetric reduction of acetophenone. The influence of the reaction temperature as well as the effect of the structure of catalyst on the enantioselectivity was investigated. The origin of the products' configuration was discussed.

Effects of Oxalic Acid Addition on the Hydrothermal Synthesis of Kaolinite

Kaolinite was hydrothermally synthesized from alumina gel and silicate by dissolving alumina gel in oxalic acid before it was mixed with silicate, effects of the amount of addition on the species of synthetic products were discussed. The reaction product was characterized by X ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that analcite is the only phase of the reaction solution without oxalic acid, the proportion of kaolinite in product increases with the amount of addition, and kaolinite is the main species when the molar ratio of oxalic acid to alumina reaches 0.6∶1.0. This is because oxalic acid addition is beneficial to the formation of kaolinite through changing the coordination number of aluminium from four to six, while the mixture of alumina gel, before it was dissolved in oxalic acid with silicate interfered with the crystallization of kaolinite.

Advanced technology for functionalization of carbon nanotubes

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has attracted considerable interest in the fields of physics, chemistry, material science and biology. The functionalized CNTs exhibit improved properties enabling facile fabrication of novel nanomaterials and *** of the functionalization approaches developed at present could be categorized into the covalent attachment of functional groups and the non-covalent adsorption of various functional molecules onto the surface of CNTs. This review highlights recent development and our work in functionalization of carbon nanotubes, leading to biocompatible CNTs, fluorescent CNTs and transition metal functionalized CNTs. These novel methods possess advantages such as simplified technical procedures and reduced cost of novel nanomaterials and nanodevices fabrication.

Reduction of VOC emissions by a membrane-based gas absorption process

A membrane-based gas absorption （MGA） process was evaluated for the removal of volatile organic compounds （VOCs） based on C6H6/N2 mixture. The absorption of C6H6 from a C6H6/N2 mixture was investigated using a hydrophobic polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor and the aqueous solution of N-formyl morpholine （NFM） as absorbent. The effects of various factors on the overall mass transfer coefficient was investigated. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of C6H6 could reach 99.5% in present studied system. A mathematical model based on resistance-in-series concept was presented to predict the value of overall mass transfer coefficient. The average error between the predicted and experimental values is 7.9%. In addition, conventional packed columns for VOCs removal was also evaluated for comparison.

The topological pressure for subadditive sequence of discontinuous functions is defined on any invariant subset having a nested family of subsets in the compact metric space. Two subadditive variational principles associated with two different relatively weak conditions are developed for the defined topological pressure. As an application, we give an example on systems with nonzero Lyapunov exponents.

By introducing the distribution probability of structural units in austenite contain- ing alloying elements and considering its effects on phase transformation, this paper establishes a calculation model of distribution probability of structural units. A new valence electron structure (VES) parameter-transformation effect coefficient of alloying elements (HL), is defined and then studied both theoretically and ex- perimentally. The relationship between the parameter HL and the multiplying factor (the quenching capability factor) of alloying elements is studied. The results indi- cate that the two parameters (HL and the quenching capability factor) have the same variation characteristic and substance feature. Therefore, the multiplying factor virtually expresses the relative quantity of structural units in the alloying elements-containing austenite.
