purpose: Umami reportedly promotes salivation. We aimed to investigate the effects of taste stimuli on slow and fast salivary secretion in humans using umami, sweet, and sour stimuli. Methods: Eight healthy women participated between 14:00 and 15:00, taking the circadian rhythm of salivary secretion into account. The types and concentrations of the taste solutions were glutamic acid (1.7 × 10p>−3p> M), inosinic acid (9.8 × 10p>−3p> M), and guanylic acid (9.8 × 10p>−3p> M) for umami stimulation, citric acid (6.5 × 10p>−3p> M) for acidity stimulation, and sucrose (1.6 × 10p>−2p> M) for sweetness stimulation. First, the unstimulated salivary flow rate was measured. Then, 3 ml of a flavor solution was dropped under the tongue using a syringe. The saliva was expelled into an aluminum cup every minute and weighed. The first minute’s value minus 3 ml flavor solution was the stimulated salivary secretion rate produced by each flavor. The time-to-return to the initial unstimulated salivary flow rate was the duration of the stimulated saliva secretion rate. Results: The mean unstimulated salivary flow rate across participants was 0.64 ± 0.25 ml/min (range: 0.23 - 1.03 ml/min). The highest amount of saliva was induced by citric acid. There were significant differences between citric acid and the other flavor solutions (p p participants were divided into slow (0.45 ± 0.16 ml/min) and fast groups (0.83 ± 0.15 ml/min) based on their median resting salivary secretion rate, there were no significant differences between the two groups in the amount of saliva secreted at 1 minute after stimulation and the duration of the salivary secretion rate. Conclusion: Umami stimulation was effective in slowing salivary secretion and sustaining salivary secretion after stimulation.

Usefulness of Newly Devised Clomiphene Citrate Administration Method Compared with the Conventional Method in Ovulation and pregnancy

Objective: Since not all women wish to conceive a child through aggressive treatment, we investigated the usefulness of modified repeated intracyclic clomiphene citrate (CC) therapy (repeated CC therapy) as a newly devised administration method. Methods: We evaluated the effects of CC administration on menstrual cycle length and retrospectively compared ovulation and pregnancy in 220 women who received CC at our hospital. patients in the conventional method group received 50 mg per day for five days, starting on the fifth day of menstruation (withdrawal bleeding). Groups with and without menstrual cycle shortening after conventional CC administration were compared. The repeated CC therapy group was also compared with the non-shortened group. Repeated CC therapy was administered for the first five days as in the conventional method, and a second five-day repeat treatment was administered after an interval of five to seven days. pregnancy rates, including indirect pregnancies, were evaluated by three different methods. Results: Ovulation and pregnancy rates were significantly better in the shortened group than in the non-shortened group (p p = 0.010, respectively). Even in the non-shortened group, ovulation and pregnancy rates including indirect pregnancies were significantly improved when ovulation was observed with repeated CC therapy (p p = 0.022, respectively). Conclusions: For patients whose menstrual cycle was not improved or shortened, repeated CC therapy as the newly devised CC administration method is useful as the next step after the conventional CC administration method.

A cup shape is a dynamic morphology of cells and organelles. With the aim of elucidating the formation of the biotic cup-shaped morphology, this study investigated cup-shaped vesicles consisting of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer from the aspect of synthetic polymer chemistry. Cup-shaped vesicles were obtained by the polymeri.ation-induced self-assembly of poly(methacrylic acid)-block-poly(n-butyl methacrylate-random-methacrylic acid), pMAA-b-p(BMA-r-MAA), in an aqueous methanol solution using the photo nitroxide-mediated controlled/living radical polymeri.ation technique. Field emission scanning electron microscopic observations demonstrated that the cup-shaped vesicles were suddenly formed during the late stage of the polymeri.ation due to the extension of the hydrophobic p(BMA-r-MAA) block chain. During the early stage, the polymeri.ation produced spheri.al vesicles rather than a cup shape. As the hydrophobic block chain was extended by the polymeri.ation progress, the spheri.al vesicles reduced the size and were accompanied by the generation of small particles that were attached to the vesicles. The vesicles continued to reduce the size due to further extension of the hydrophobic chain;however, they suddenly grew into cup-shaped vesicles. This growth was accounted for by a change in the critical packing shape of the copolymer due to the hydrophobic chain extension. These findings are helpful for a better understanding of the biotic cup-shaped vesicle formation.

The acceleration mechanisms by a photosensitive onium salt for the nitroxide-mediated photocontrolled/living radical polymeri.ation (photo-NMp) were determined. The photo-NMp of methyl methacrylate was performed by irradiation at room temperature using 4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperi.ine-1-oxyl (MTEMpO) as the mediator and (2RS, 2’RS)-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) as the initiator. The polymeri.ation was accelerated in the presence of (4-tertbutylphenyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate (tBuS) to produce a polymer with a molecular weight distribution as narrow as the polymeri.ation in its absence. (±)-Camphor-10-sulfonic acid or 2-fluoro-1-methylpyridinium p-toluenesulfonate had no effect on the polymeri.ation speed, suggesting that tBuS did not serve as the photo-acid generator for the photo-NMp. It was found that the acceleration of the polymeri.ation was based on the electron transfer from MTEMpO into tBuS in the excited state to temporarily generate a free radical propagating chain end and an oxoaminium salt (OAS), the one-electron oxidant of MTEMpO. This electron transfer mechanism was veri.ied on the basis of the fact that the photo-NMp in the presence of tBuS was still accelerated by triphenylamine, the electron transfer inhibitor, to partly produce a polymer with an uncontrolled molecular weight. The formation of an uncontrolled molecular weight polymer indicated the generation of a free radical propagating chain end due to the deactivation of the OAS by the triphenylamine. It was deduced that tBuS served as the electron acceptor from MTEMpO in the excited state to temporarily produce a free radical propagating chain end along with OAS, resulting in the acceleration of the polymeri.ation.

pancreatic cancer is a malignancy with an extremely poor prognosis. Chronic pancreatitis is a well-known risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Inflammation is thought to influence carcinogenesis through DNA damage and activation of intracellular signaling pathways. Many transcription factors and signaling pathways co-operate to determine and maintain cell identity at each phase of pancreatic organogenesis and cell differentiation. Recent studies have shown that carcinogenesis is promoted through the suppression of transcription factors related to differentiation. pancreatitis also demonstrates transcriptional changes, suggesting that multifactorial epigenetic changes lead to impaired differentiation. Taken together, these factors may constitute an important framework for pancreatic carcinogenesis. In this review, we discuss the role of inflammation and de-differentiation in the development of pancreatic cancer, as well as the future of novel therapeutic applications.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV) is still a worldwide health concern. While divergent factors are involved in its pathogenesis, it is now clear that HBV RNAs, principally templates for viral proteins and viral DNAs, have diverse biological functions involved in HBV pathogenesis. These functions include viral replication, hepatic fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis. Depending on the sequence similarities, HBV RNAs may act as sponges for host mi RNAs and may deregulate mi RNA functions, possibly leading to pathological consequences. Some parts of the HBV RNA molecule may function as viralderi.ed mi RNA, which regulates viral replication. HBV DNA can integrate into the host genomic DNA and produce novel viral-host fusion RNA, which may have pathological functions. To date, elimination of HBVderi.ed covalently closed circular DNA has not been achieved. However, RNA transcription silencing may be an alternative practical approach to treat HBVinduced pathogenesis. A full understanding of HBV RNA transcription and the biological functions of HBV RNA may open a new avenue for the development of novel HBV therapeutics.

Wind Loading on a Hyperbolic paraboloid Free Roof

Wind loading on an H.p. （hyperbolic paraboloid） free roof has been investigated on the basis of a wind tunnel experi.ent. The roof models of 1 mm thickness were made of nylon resin using laser lithography. The parameters under consideration are the rise to span ratio and slope of the roof. The overall aerodynamic forces and moments were measured by a six-component force balance in a turbulent boundary layer. Based on a combination of the lift and moment coefficients, the design wind force coefficients, CNW^＊ and CNL^＊, on the windward and leeward halves of the roof are proposed. Focus is on the column axial forces induced by wind loading as the load effect for discussing the design wind loads, assuming that the roof is rigid and supported by four comer columns. Indeed, two pairs of CNW^＊ and CNL^＊, generating the maximum tension and compression in the columns, are provided for each of the two or three wind directions parallel to the roof＇s diagonal lines. The proposed values of the wind force coefficients are compared with the specified values in the Australia/New-Zealand Standard for a limited range of rise to span ratio.

Effect of porosity on the Wind Loads on a Hyperbolic paraboloid Canopy Roof

A discussion is made of the wind force coefficients for designing the main wind force resisting systems of H.p. （Hyperbolic-paraboid）-shaped porous canopy roofs on the basis of a wind tunnel experi.ent. Roof models with a number of small circular holes were made of nylon resin using laser lithography. The porosity was changed from 0 （solid） to 0.4. Besides the porosity, the geometric parameters of the models were the rise to span ratio and slope of the roof. The overall aerodynamic forces and moments acting on a model were measured by a six-component force balance in a turbulent boundary layer. The results indicate that the porosity significantly reduces the wind loads. The design wind force coefficients for porous canopy roofs can be provided by those for solid roofs with the same configuration multiplied by a reduction factor. The proposed wind force coefficients are veri.ied by a comparison of the load effect predicted by the proposed wind force coefficients with the maximum load effect obtained from dynamic analyses using the time history of wind force and moment coefficients. The axial forces induced in the columns supporting the roof are regarded as the load effect for discussing the design wind loads.
