Effect of sample size on the response of DEM samples with a realistic grading

This paper shows that for DEM simulations of triaxial tests using samples with a grading that is repre- sentative of a real soil, the sample size significantly influences the observed material response. Four DEM samples with identical initial states were produced： three cylindrical samples bounded by rigid wails and one bounded by a cubical periodic cell, When subjected to triaxial loading, the samples with rigid boundaries were more dilative, stiffer and reached a higher peak stress ratio than the sample enclosed by periodic boundaries. For the rigid-wall samples, dilatancy increased and stiffness decreased with increasing sample size, The periodic sample was effectively homogeneous, The void ratio increased and the contact density decreased close to the rigid walls, This heterogeneity reduced with increasing sample size. The positions of the critical state lines （CSLs） of the overall response in e-log p＇ space were sensitive to the sample size, although no difference was observed between their slopes. The critical states of the interior regions of the rigid-wall-bounded samples approached that of the homogeneous periodic sample with increasing sample size. The ultimate strength of the material at the critical state is independent of sample size.

Determination of Polarity Terms of Some Nitrogen-Containing Surfactants and Simulated Hydrophobic Tail Models by Gas Chromatography

Some polarity terms of two groups of nitrogen-containing surfactants （six alkanolamides and nine polyoxyethylenated long chain amines） are measured through gas chromatography. The apparent methanol carbon number (CMeoH) and polarity index （IP） values are determined on the investigated surfactants as stationary phases in packed columns. Similarly, CMeoH and IP values are determined on simulated hydrophobic tail （SHT） models. The obtained results reveal that the introduction of SHT approach permits the distinction between the polarities of different surfactants and their head groups. The measured polarity terms are discussed as related to hydrophile-lipophile balance （HLB） number and the hydrophobic group carbon number （RCN）. Some equations relating the measured polarity values and these variable have been developed.

The polarization behavior of elastic scattering at 1473 nm is analyzed from a silicon microsphere on an optical fiber *** 0.27 nm angular mode spacing of the resonances correlates well with the optical size of the silicon *** spectral linewidths of the resonances are on the order of 10^(−3) nm,which corresponds to quality factors on the order of *** transverse magnetically polarized elastic scattering signal has higher resonance to modulation depth and background ratio than the transverse electrically polarized elastic scattering signal and is suitable for high-resolution optical filtering applications such as optical monitoring and sensing.

Semantic Web(SW)provides new opportunities for the study and application of big data,massive ranges of data sets in varied formats from multiple *** studies focus on potential SW technologies for resolving big data problems,such as structurally and semantically heterogeneous data that result from the variety of data formats(structured,semi-structured,numeric,unstructured text data,email,video,audio,stock ticker).SW offers information semantically both for people and machines to retain the vast volume of data and provide a meaningful output of unstructured *** the current research,we implement a new semantic Extract Transform Load(ETL)model that uses SW technologies for aggregating,integrating,and representing data as linked ***,geospatial data resources are aggregated from the internet,and then a semantic ETL model is used to store the aggregated data in a semantic model after converting it to Resource Description Framework(RDF)format for successful integration and *** principal contribution of this research is the synthesis,aggregation,and semantic representation of geospatial data to solve problems.A case study of city data is used to illustrate the semantic ETL model’s *** results show that the proposed model solves the structural and semantic heterogeneity problems in diverse data sources for successful data aggregation,integration,and representation.

The Synthetic and Mechanical Properties of a Silica Matrix Cermet Composite

A cermet composite was prepared by employing thermal spraying flame onto stainless steel surfaces of(304)*** 25,50%of aluminum was mixed with matrix of(10%Al_(2)o_(3)-Sio_(2)).A spray system consistis of oxygen barrel,acetylene and spray gun that contains powders feeder at different spray distances(5,10,15,20 and 25 cm).The thermal treatment of the samples resulting from spraying was performed at 1100℃for 1.5 *** physical examinations(porosity and adhesion),mechanical tests(hardness and wear rate)and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM)test were performed before and after thermal *** test results showed that the best mixing rate was(50%)and the best spray distance was(15cm)where the quality of coating layer improved after thermal treatment at 1100℃for 1.5 hr with a porosity ratio reduced from 11.2%to 6.6%,and adhesion strength improved with the increase in the alumina content to 50%.The results demonstrated that the best adhesion value after thermal treatment was 30.98 *** hardness of coating layer increased from 45.78 to 54.88 HV;while the lowest rate of wear was at 50%of alumina with a spray distance of ***,there was a clear improvement based on AFM within grain size,root mean square and roughness rate.

Mechanistic study of vacuum UV catalytic oxidation for toluene degradation over Ceo_(2) nanorods

The present study specifically investigates vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) catalytic oxidation for toluene degradation over Ceo_(2) *** effects of ultraviolet photocatalytic oxidation (UV-PCo) and ozone catalytic oxidation (oZCo) were manifested in the results of toluene removal and Cox generation,while the combination of UV-PCo andoZCo (UV-oZCo) did not lead to improvement of *** the processes contribute to ozone decomposition,but no obvious synergetic effects of the different processes can be *** analysis results indicated that more toluene was oxidized into by-products,such as benzyl alcohol and benzaldehyde,by UV-oZCo rather than forming *** hydroxyl radical (·oH) and superoxide radical (·o_(2)^(-)) were found in all the processes of the VUV-PCo-oZCo system(combination of VUV photolysis,UV-PCo,oZCo and UV-oZCo processes).In the UV-oZCo process,the formation of hydroxyl radical was promoted,while that of superoxide radical was impeded,resulting in lower mineralization level of *** mechanistic study of toluene degradation over Ceo_(2) nanorods in the VUV-PCo-oZCo system revealed that with the formation of·o_(2)^(-)and·oH,toluene is first oxidized to intermediates,followed by further ring–opening reaction and,finally,degradation into Co_(2) and H_(2)***_(2) nanorods function as both ozonation catalyst and photocatalyst,and the redox pair of Ce^(3+)and Ce^(4+)are interconvertible and can keep a balance.
