Self-/conspecific discrimination and superparasitism strategy.in the ovicidal parasitoid Echthrodelphax fairchildii （Hy.enoptera： Dry.nidae）

Superparasitism in solitary.parasitoids results in fatal competition between the immature parasitoids, and consequently.only.one individual can emerge. In the semisoli- tary.ovicidal parasitoid Echthrodelphaxfairchildii （Hy.enoptera： Dry.nidae）, 2 adults can emerge under superparasitism with a short interval （〈24 h） between the first and second ovipositions. We determined the female parasitoid＇s behavioral responses under self- and conspecific superparasitism bouts with first-to-second oviposition intervals of 〈2 h. The self- and conspecific superparasitizing frequencies increased up to an oviposition interval of 0.75 h, with the former remaining lower than the latter, particularly.for oviposition intervals of _〈0.25 h, suggesting the existence of self-/conspecific discrimination. The superparasitizing frequency.plateaued for oviposition intervals of _〉0.75 h, with no dif- ference between self- and conspecific superparasitism. The ovicidal-probing frequency.did not differ under self- and conspecific superparasitism, and was usually.〈20%. The females exhibited no preference for the oviposition side （i.e., ovipositing on the side with or without the first progeny. and almost alway. laid female eggs for any.oviposition in- terval under self- and conspecific superparasitism. The sex ratio was not affected by.the ty.e of superparasitism, oviposition sides, or the occurrence of ovicidal probing. These observed results about the oviposition side, ovicidal probing, and sex ratios differed from the predictions obtained assuming that the females behave optimally. Possible reasons for the discrepancies are discussed： likely.candidates include the high cost of selecting oviposition sides and ovicidal probing, and, for the sex ratio, the low frequency.of encountering suitable hosts before superparasitism bouts.

Seemingly.maladaptive refraining from infanticidal probing at the third parasitism attack by.the semi-solitary.parasitoid Echthrodelphax fairchildii （Hy.enoptera： Dry.nidae）

We assessed the adaptiveness of refraining from infanticidal probing at the third attack under triple parasitism in the parasitoid Echthrodelphaxfairchildii Perkins, by.comparing fitness returns from the third attack with and without probing. Fitness returns were assessed in terms of the survival rate, mean developmental time, and mean adult head width of the progenies. Not probing was maladaptive under triple parasitism with oviposition intervals of 1/24 and 24/24 hours （where the numbers before and after the slash refer to the first-to-second and second-to-third oviposition intervals, respectively., although no significant difference was detected in fitness returns for oviposition intervals of 24/1 hours. We suggest that the cost of probing （especially.the decrease in the chance of future ovipositions） is a reason for the seemingly.maladaptive absence of probing.

Photocurable sy.tems, which offer advantages such as microfabrication and in situ fabrication, have been widely.used as dental restorative materials. Because the visible light-curable(VLC) sy.tem causes no biological damage, it is popular as a dental material and is being investigated by.many.researchers for other medical applications. Here, the principle of the VLC sy.tem is explained and recent progress in key.components including photoinitiators, monomers, macromers, and prepoly.ers is discussed. Finally. biomedical applications for drug delivery.and soft tissue engineering are reviewed. Considering the recent development of VLC sy.tems, its importance in the field of medical applications is expected to continue to increase in the future.

Tracing sediment transport history.using mineralogical fingerprinting in a river basin with dams utilizing sediment sluicing

Sediment causes a serious problem in relation to dam function. A cooperative sediment sluicing operation has been under way.since 2017 to prevent sediment from accumulating in dams in the Mimi River,Miy.zaki, Japan. To achieve a smooth and stable operation, it is very.important to determine the sediment source and a sediment transport sy.tem to maintain the dam’s function. In the current study. the source and transport of sediment from the Mimi River basin have been analy.ed with X-ray.diffraction(XRD) to reveal the peaks of mineral species. The sediment samples were collected in the Mimi River basin from the Tsukabaru Dam to the sea in an area including 4 dams and 5 tributaries. In addition, the minerals in samples collected in 2014, before the start of the sediment sluicing operation, and from 2018 to 2020, after the start of the operation, were analy.ed. An evaluation of the similarity.of the sediment at each sampling point based on the X-ray.diffraction peaks of mineral species showed that sediment distributed upstream was transported downstream in the y.ar when the sediment sluicing was *** result indicates that the sediment sluicing operation at dams ensured the continuity.of the sediment distribution in the Mimi River basin. In addition, an investigation done in 2020 showed that sediment particles very.similar to those of the upstream tributaries were deposited downstream because of extensive flooding caused by.a large ty.hoon. The management of sediment transport has the greatest importance in a river basin where a dam is to be constructed. It is possible to trace the history.of the sediment distribution and movement resulting from the operation of sediment sluicing by.using sediment mineral analy.is.

The Method for Optimum Design of Water Rocket Flight Stability.Performance Conditions Using CAE with T Method and Robust Parameter Design

A water rocket is a rocket sy.tem that obtains thrust by.injecting water with compressed air of up to about 8 atmospheres. It is usually.manufactured using a pressure-resistant PET bottle. The mechanical elements and principles contained in the water rocket have much in common with the actual small rocket sy.tem, and are suitable as educational and research teaching materials in the field of mechanics. Especially.in the field of disaster prevention and mitigation, the use of water rockets is being researched and developed as a rescue tool in the event of a flood or earthquake as a disaster countermeasure. However, since the water rocket is a fly.ng object based on the mechanical principle, it is important to ensure the accuracy.and stability.of the flight path. In this paper, a mechanical simulator is developed with a numerical calculation program based on the mechanical consideration of water rocket flight performance. In addition, the correlation between the flight distance obtained in the simulation and the estimated flight distance is analy.ed by.apply.ng a multivariate analy.is method and verify.ng the validity.of the flight distance calculated from the result. Based on the verification results, we will apply.a statistical optimization method to approach the optimization of flight stability.performance conditions for water rockets.

AIM: To determine the efficacy.of Mac-2 binding protein (Mac-2bp) for diagnosis of chronic ***: Fifty.nine healthy.volunteers (HV), 162 patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), and 94 patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) were enrolled in this study. We measured serum Mac-2bp using our developed enzy.e-linked immunosorbent assay.kit. Additional biochemical variables were measured using an automated analy.er (including aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, γ-glutamy.transferase, alkaline phosphatase, trigly.eride, C-reactive protein, and amy.ase levels) or chemiluminescent enzy.e immunoassay.(carbohy.rate antigen 19-9 and carcinoembry.nic antigen). The ability.of Mac-2bp to predict CP diagnosis accurately.was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) ***: Serum Mac-2bp levels were significantly.increased in CP patients compared to HV (P y. Multivariate analy.es demonstrated that serum Mac-2bp levels were independent determinants for CP diagnosis from HV and PDAC patients. Immunohistological staining showed that Mac-2bp was expressed faintly.in the pancreas tissues of both CP and PDAC patients. Serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, γ-glutamy.transferase, alkaline phosphatase, and trigly.eride levels were significantly.higher in patients with CP or PDAC. Serum Mac-2bp levels were highly.correlated with protein levels of alanine aminotransferase, γ-glutamy.transferase, and C-reactive protein, but not amy.ase, suggesting that the damaged liver produces ***: Measurement of serum Mac-2bp may.be a novel and useful biomarker for CP diagnosis as well as liver fibrosis in the general population.
