Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of COVID-19 on fetal well-being and perinatal outcomes. methods: Pregnant women with documented COVID-19 infection who visited the antenatal care clinic of El Shatby maternity Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, from may 2020 to may 2021 were selected and classified into three groups according to the illness severity: mild, moderate, and severe. Fetal well-being was examined using the umbilical and cerebral Doppler and nonstress test (NST). The estimated fetal weight and amniotic fluid volume were also evaluated. After delivery, the neonates were evaluated through Apgar scoring at 1 and 5 min, cord blood samples, and neonatal nasopharyngeal swabs. Results: Abnormal umbilical and cerebral Doppler findings, abnormal NST results, higher incidence of cesarean section (CS) and emergency CS, and poor perinatal outcomes were observed in severe cases. moderate and mild maternal infections had neither an adverse perinatal outcome nor an effect on the mode of delivery. Conclusion: Severe COVID-19 infection can affect the perinatal outcome.

Aim of the study: Examing the role of methylene tetra-hydrofolate reductase (mTHFR C677T) polymorphisms in unexplained female infertility. methods: The study was conducted on women with unexplained infertility attending the Infertility Clinic at El-Shatby University Hospital, Alexandria, during the period from October 2020 to October 2021. Uterine artery Doppler assessment and detection of mTHFR C677T gene mutation were done. The frequencies of homozygous and heterozygous gene mutations were determined. Results: In group I, 35 cases had abnormal uterine artery Doppler compared to 22 normal cases in group II. As regards mTHFR C677T gene mutation, 19 cases were positive in group I (7 were homozygous and 12 were heterozygous) and only one case was positive in group II (heterozygous) which was statistically significant. Conclusion: mTHFR C677T gene polymorphisms may play a role in unexplained infertility.

The synthesis and characterization of new transition metal complexes of mn（ll）, Co（II）, Ni（II）, Cu（II） and Zn（II） with 3-（2-hydroxynaph-l-ylazo）-1,2,4-triazole （HL1） and 3-（2-hydroxy-3-carboxynaph-l-ylazo）-1,2,4-triazole （HL2） have been carried out. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analyses, thermal analyses, spectral and magnetic data. The IR and 1H NmR spectra indicated that HL1 and HL2 coordinated to the metal ions as bidentate monobasic ligands via the hydroxyl O and azo N atoms. The UV-Vis, ESR spectra and magnetic moment data revealed the formation of octahedral complexes [mnL1（AcO）（H2O）3] （1）, [CoL1（AcO）（HzO）3]·H2O （2）, [mnL2- （AcO）（H20）3] （6） and [CoL2（AcO）（H2O）3] （7）, [NiL1（AcO）（H2O）] （3）,[ZnLI（AcO）（HzO）]·H2O （5）, [NiL2- （AcO）（H2O）] （8）, [ZnL2（AcO）（H2O）]·H2O （10） have tetrahedral geometry, whereas [CuLI（AcO）（H2O）2] （4） and [CuL2（AcO）（H2O）2]·5H2O （9） have square pyramidal geometry.. The mass spectra of the complexes under ei-con- ditions showed the highest peaks corresponding to their molecular weights, based on the atomic weights of 55mn, 59Co, 58Ni, 63Cu and 64Zn isotopes; besides, other peaks containing other isotopes distribution of the metal. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the thermal decomposition stages were computed from the thermal data using Coats-Redfern method. HL2 and complexes 6--10 were found to have moderate antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus＇ aureus （gram positive）, Escherichia coli （gram negative） and Salmonella sp bacteria, and antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Also, in most cases, metallation increased the activity compared with the free ligand.

Spectrofluorimetric and spectrophotometric stability-indicating methods were developed and validated for analysis of veralipride （Ver） in presence of its hydrolytic and oxidative degradants. The spectrofluorimetric method was based on direct measurement of the intrinsic fluorescence of Ver at 366 nm after excitation at 299 nm using sodium lauryl sulfate （SLS） as micelle enhancer. The fluorescence intensity plot was linear over the concentration range 1.0-10.0 ***-1. The high sensitivity of the method allowed its successful application to the analysis of Ver in spiked human plasma. Two other methods were developed. They are based on the oxidative coupling reac- tion of Vet with 3-methyl benzothiazolin-2-one hydrazone （mBTH） hydrochloride in presence of ceric ammonium sulphate in an acidic medium. The first method depends on spectrophotometric measurement of the stable green colored oxidative coupling product at 660 nm. The different experimental parameters affecting the reaction were optimized. Linearity range is 10.0--100.0 ~tgomL-1. The second method depends on a fluorescence quenching effect of Vet on the fluorescence of Ce3＋. The difference in fluorescence intensity was measured at 380 nm after excitation at 300 nm. This method is applicable over the concentration ranges 0.25-2.50 pg-mL-1. The methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines. They were successfully applied for the analysis of Ver in drug substance, drug product and in laboratory prepared mixtures containing different percentages of hydrolytic and oxidative degradants.

AIm To investigate the clinical utility of serum annexin A2(ANXA2) as a diagnostic marker for early hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).mETHODS This study was performed in HCC Clinic of Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt and included: Group 1: Fifty patients with early stage HCC(Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A); Group 2: Twenty five patients with chronic liver disease; and Control Group: Fifteen healthy, age-and sex-matched subjects who were seronegative for viral hepatitis markers. The followinglaboratory investigations were done: Viral hepatitis markers [hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C virus(HCV) antibodies], HCV RNA in HCV antibody-positive patients, serum alpha fetoprotein(AFP), and serum ANXA2 *** In this study, 88% of HCC patients(n = 44) were HCVpositive, while HBV infection represented only 8% of all HCC patients(n = 4); and two patients were negative for both viral markers. A highly significant difference was found between patients with HCC and chronic liver disease as well as controls with regard to serum ANXA2 levels(130, IQR 15-240; 15, IQR 15-17; and 17, IQR 15-30 ng/m L, respectively). The area under the curve of ANXA2 was 0.865; the cut-off value was established to be 18 ng/mL with a diagnostic sensitivity of 74% and a specificity of 88%, while the sensitivity and specificity of AFP at the cut-off value of 200 ng/dL were 20% and 100%, *** Serum ANXA2 may serve as a biomarker for the early detection of HCC.

Volatile components in the extracts of basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L.) were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/mS) with electron ionization (ei) mode. The major volatile components of basil under investigation are α-pinene, sabinene, β-pinene, d-limonene, eucalyptol, l-linalool and estragole. Electron ionization mass spectra of these compounds have been obtained and investigated. Furthermore, the semi-empirical mNDO [modified Neglect of Diatomic Overlap] method was used to calculate the thermochemical data for the structural properties of these compounds.

Background: Complications linked to postpartum & pregnancy are one of the major causes of female death.
