Dietary effects of A zolla pinnata combined with exogenous digestive enzyme(Digestin^(TM)) on growth and nutrients utilization of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii(de Man 1879)

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of either individual or combined wheat bran(WB) replacement with Azolla pinnata supplemented with Digestin^(TM) in the diet of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii Postlarvae(PL) on growth performance, nutrient utilization, chemical body composition and survival(%). Experimental diets were a wheat bran-soybean based diet with no Azolla and Digestin^(TM)(control, T_1), and diets containing 17% Azolla supplemented with Digestin^(TM) 0%(T_2), 1%(T_3), 2%(T_4) and 3%(T 5). Each experimental diet was allocated into three tanks(6 m^3/tank) fed for 12 wks. Each tank was subdivided into three equal pens by nets(2 m^3) and stoked with 84 PL/m^2. The experimental diets were readily consumed by prawns PLs where both high growth and good feed efficiency were achieved for all diets. The results showed that the diets containing A. pinnata supplemented with Digestin? at the level up to 3% have the higher growth and better nutrient utilization than the control diet. No differences were observed for moisture and protein content among the experimental diets. However, the highest protein content was observed on prawns fed on diets T_1 and T 5 respectively, while the lowest value was recorded for T_4 diet. The results also show that prawn PLs fed the diets contain A. pinnata and supplemented with Digestin^(TM) recorded the highest values of body lipid content compared to the control diet. Feed efficiency and economic conversion rate(ECR) values show that economic performance and the cost-effectiveness of the A. pinnata supplemented with up to 3% Digestin^(TM) recorded the highest net return, and therefore it is recommended for prawn, M. rosenbergii PL's. These results are clearly indicating that A. pinnata have a good potential for use in prawn diets at reasonable levels than other conventional diets.

Assessment of plant diversity of endemic species of the Saharo-Arabian region in Egypt

Savanna, semi-deserts, and hot deserts characterize the Saharo-Arabian region, which includes Morocco, Mauretania, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, southern Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. Its neighboring regions, the Sudano-Zambezian region belonging to the Paleotropical Kingdom and the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian regions included in the Holarctic Kingdom, share a large portion of their flora with the Saharo-Arabian region. Despite the widespread acknowledgment of the region's global importance for plant diversity, an up to date list of the Saharo-Arabian endemics is still unavailable. The available data are frequently insufficient or out of date at both the whole global and the national scales. Therefore, the present study aims at screening and verifying the Saharo-Arabian endemic plants and determining the phytogeographical distribution of these taxa in the Egyptian flora. Hence, a preliminary list of 429 Saharo-Arabian endemic plants in Egypt was compiled from the available literature. Indeed, by excluding the species that were recorded in any countries or regions outside the Saharo-Arabian region based on different literature, database reviews, and websites, the present study has reduced this number to 126 taxa belonging to 87 genera and 37 families. Regarding the national geographic distribution, South Sinai is the richest region with 83 endemic species compared with other eight phytogeographic regions in Egypt, followed by the Isthmic Desert(the middle of Sinai Peninsula, 53 taxa). Sahara regional subzone(SS1) distributes all the 126 endemic species, Arabian regional subzone(SS2) owns 79 taxa, and Nubo-Sindian subzone(SS3) distributes only 14 endemics. Groundwater quality assessment is important to assure safe and durable water *** semi-arid areas of Algeria,groundwater represents the main water resource for drinking water supply of the rural population as well as for irrigation of agricultural *** samples from wells and springs were collected from the Gargaat Tarf and Annk Djemel sub-watersheds of the Oum el Bouaghi,Algeria,and were analyzed and compared with the World Health Organization(WHO)*** showed that most of the measured physical and chemical parameters exceeded the quality limits according to the WHO *** had a slightly alkaline water pH(7.00-7.79),electrical conductivity>1500μS/cm,chloride>500 mg/L,calcium>250 mg/L,and magnesium>155 mg/*** quality index(WQI)results showed that 68%of the area had excellent water quality,24%of the samples fell into good category,and only 8%were of poor quality and unsuitable for human *** wells in the area showed bacterial *** coliforms(453.9(±180.3)CFU(colony-forming units)/100 mL),fecal coliforms(243.2(±99.2)CFU/100 mL),and fecal streptococci(77.9(±32.0)CFU/100 mL)loads were above the standard limits set by the *** results confirmed that water resources in the study area were strongly influenced by anthropogenic activities and were not recommended for consumption as drinking water.

Hot arid zones represent vital reservoirs of unique species and ecosystems,holding significant importance for *** study aimed to explore the plant diversity associated with tree plantations in urban ecosystems under hyper-arid climatic conditions in the Sahara Desert of *** May 2022,30 quadrats measuring 1 m^(2) each were established at the base of Phoenix dactylifera,Leucaena leucocephala,and Tamarix aphylla,corresponding to the dominant tree species in each of three *** each quadrat,the plant quantitative inventory was conducted to measure plant diversity and similarity among the studied *** on this,we assessed the plant functional traits and rarity/abundance status of the *** findings revealed a diverse flora associated with the studied plantations,comprising 29 plant species grouped into 27 genera and 12 ***,Poaceae(accounting for 30.8% of the flora),Asteraceae(25.0%),and Zygophyllaceae(21.6%)were *** an overall density of approximately 555 individuals/m^(2),Zygophyllum album(120 individuals/m^(2))and Polypogon monspeliensis(87 individuals/m^(2))emerged as the most abundant *** trait analysis underscored the pivotal role of therophytes(constituting over 50.0% of the flora)and anemochorous species(33.0%-62.5%).Phytogeographic analysis emphasized the prevalence of the Saharo-Arabic element(constituting over 31.0% of the flora)and the Mediterranean Saharo-Arabic element(9.5%-21.5%).The Cosmopolitan element thrived under disturbance factors,recording percentages from 13.0% to 20.0% of the plant *** rarity/abundance status of the flora emphasized the significance of rare,common,and very common species in the studied *** findings could provide fundamental data for the effective control and management of biodiversity in hot hyper-arid urban ecosystems.

Thermal performance of domed roof in air-conditioned spaces

Due to their thermal performance,domed roofs are one of the passive solutions that affect energy consumption in *** thermal performance of domed roofs has been investigated in many naturally ventilated ***,few studies have discussed their performance in conditioned ***,this study introduces a computational comparison between domed and flat roofs to investigate their impact on thermal comfort inside a conditioned *** an earlier stage,field measurements were carried out inside a Bahraini mosque to acquire its indoor air conditions during the summer period of 2021,in addition to validating the computational *** findings of this study confirm that,under mechanical cooling conditions,the flat roof offers a lower indoor temperature than the domed roof by 0.4℃and 0.1℃for open and closed doors,***,the air velocity is lower by approximately 0.01 m/s for both door *** overall PMV values of the flat roof are also lower by 0.07 and 0.01,while the PPD values are lower by 0.20,and 0.34 for open and closed doors,*** on these small differences,it can be concluded that the thermal performance of both roofing systems behaves equally in conditioned ***,the air patterns are substantially different,the overall thermal performance is *** similarity drives building designers to rethink the thermal performance of the domed roofs in air-conditioned spaces with such a hot climate,regardless of their aesthetic and acoustical behaviour.

Dunbar Syndrome and Hypoxic Hepatitis: An Unusual Presentation

Hypoxic hepatitis, also known as ischemic hepatitis, is characterized by acute hepatocellular injury due to inadequate oxygen delivery to the liver. Celiac trunk stenosis can lead to hepatic ischemia and subsequent liver damage. We present the case of an 81-year-old patient with a history of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, hypothyroidism, and biliary lithiasis, who developed hypoxic hepatitis secondary to Dunbar syndrome and a stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery. The patient improved symptoms and liver function tests with conservative management, including intravenous fluids and supportive care. Long-term management involved continued antiplatelet therapy and statins, with consideration of further interventions for celiac trunk stenosis. This case underscores the importance of recognizing Dunbar syndrome as well as superior mesentery trunk stenosis as a potential cause of hypoxic hepatitis. It highlights the need for multidisciplinary management in such cases.

Outcomes of pancreaticoduodenectomy in elderly patients

BACKGROUND： Although the mortality and morbidity of pancreaticoduodenectomy（PD） have improved significantly over the past years, the concerns for elderly patients undergoing PD are still present. Furthermore, the frequency of PD is increasing because of the increasing proportion of elderly patients and the increasing incidence of periampullary tumors. This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of PD in elderly ***： We studied all patients who had undergone PD in our center between January 1995 and February 2015. The patients were divided into three groups based on age： group I（patients aged 〈60 years）, group II（those aged 60 to 69 years） and group III（those aged ≥70 years）. The primary outcome was the rate of total postoperative complications. Secondary endpoint included total operative time, hospital mortality, length of postoperative hospital stay, delayed gastric emptying, re-exploration, and survival ***： A total of 828 patients who had undergone PD for resection of periampullary tumor were included in this study. There were 579（69.9%） patients in group I, 201（24.3%） in group II, and 48（5.8%） in group III. The overall incidence of complications was higher in elderly patients（25.9% in group I, 36.8% in group II, and 37.5% in group III; P=0.006）. There were more patients complicated with delayed gastric emptying in group II compared with the other two groups. There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula, biliary leakage, pancreatitis, pulmonary complications and hospital ***： PD can be performed safely in selected elderly patients. Advanced age alone should not be a contraindication for PD. The outcome of elderly patients who have undergone PD is similar to that of younger patients, and the increased rate of complications is due to the presence of associated comorbidities.

Predictors of long-term survival after pancreaticoduodenectomy for peri-ampullary adenocarcinoma: A retrospective study of 5-year survivors

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD) is the standard curative treatment for periampullary tumors. The aim of this study is to report the incidence and predictors of long-term survival( ≥ 5 years) after PD. Methods: This study included patients who underwent PD for pathologically proven periampullary adenocarcinomas. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group(I) patients who survived less than 5 years and group(II) patients who survived ≥ 5 years. Results: There were 47(20.6%) long-term survivors( ≥ 5 years) among 228 patients underwent PD for periampullary adenocarcinoma. Patients with ampullary adenocarcinoma represented 31(66.0%) of the long-term survivors. Primary analysis showed that favourable factors for long-term survival include age < 60 years old, serum CEA < 5 ng/mL, serum CA 19-9 < 37 U/mL, non-cirrhotic liver, tumor size < 2 cm, site of primary tumor, postoperative pancreatic fistula, R0 resection, postoperative chemotherapy, and no recurrence. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that CA 19-9 < 37 U/mL [OR(95% CI) = 1.712(1.24 8–2.34 8), P = 0.001], smaller tumor size [OR(95% CI) = 1.335(1.032–1.726), P = 0.028] and R0 resection [OR(95% CI) = 3.098(2.095–4.582), P < 0.001] were independent factors for survival ≥ 5 years. The prognosis was best for ampullary adenocarcinoma, for which the median survival was 54 months and 5-year survival rate was 39.0%, and the poorest was pancreatic head adenocarcinoma, for which the median survival was 27 months and 5-year survival rate was 7%. Conclusions: The majority of long-term survivors after PD for periampullary adenocarcinoma are patients with ampullary tumor. CA 19-9 < 37 U/mL, smaller tumor size, and R0 resection were found to be independent factors for long-term survival ≥ 5 years.

Clinicopathological features and surgical outcome of patients with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma(experience with 22 patients over a 15-year period)

AIM To evaluate the clinicopathological features and the surgical outcomes of patients with fibrolamellar hepato-cellular carcinoma(FL-HCC)over a 15-year period. METHODS This is a retrospective study including 22 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of FL-HCC who underwent hepatectomy over a 15-year period. Tumor characteristics,survival and recurrence were evaluated. RESULTS There were 11 male and 11 female with a median age of 29 years(range from 21 to 58 years). Two(9%)patients had hepatitis C viral infection and only 2(9%)patients had alpha-fetoprotein level > 200 ng/m L. The median size of the tumors was 12 cm(range from 5-20 cm). Vascular invasion was detected in 5(23%)patients. Four(18%)patients had lymph node metastases. The median follow up period was 42 mo and the 5-year survival was 65%. Five(23%)patients had a recurrent disease,4 of them had a second surgery with 36 mo median time interval. Vascular invasion is the only significant negative prognostic factor CONCLUSION FL-HCC has a favorable prognosis than common HCC and should be suspected in young patients with non cirrhotic liver. Aggressive surgical resection should be done for all patients. Repeated hepatectomy should be considered for these patients as it has a relatively indolent course.
