Comparative studies on fouling of homogeneous anion exchange membranes by different structured organics in electrodialysis

Five negatively charged organic compounds with different structures, sodium methane sulfonate(MS), sodium benzene sulfonate(BS), sodium 6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulfonate(NSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS), were used to examine the fouling of an anion exchange membrane(AeM) in electrodialysis(eD),to explore the effect of molecular characteristics on the fouling behavior on the AeM and changes in the surface and electrochemical properties of the AeM. Results indicated that the fouling degree of the AeM by the different organics followed the order:SDBS > SDS > NSS > BS > MS. SDBS and SDS formed a dense fouling layer on the surface of the AeM, which was the main factor in the much more severe membrane fouling, and completely restricted the transmembrane ion migration. The other three organics caused fouling of the AeM by adsorption on the surface and/or accumulation in the interlayer of the AeM, and exhibited almost no influence on the transmembrane ion migration. It was also concluded that the organics with benzene rings caused more severe fouling of the AeM due to the stronger affinity interaction and steric effect between the organics and the AeM compared with organics with aliphatic chains.

Sintering, thermal stability and mechanical properties of ZrO2-WC composites obtained by pulsed electric current sintering

ZrO2-WC composites exhibit comparable mechanical properties as traditional WC-Co materials, which provides an opportunity to partially replace WC-Co for some applications. In this study, 2 mol.% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 composites with 40 vol.% WC were consolidated in the 1150℃-1850℃ range under a pressure of 60 MPa by pulsed electric current sintering （PeCS）. The densification behavior, microstructure and phase constitution of the composites were investigated to clarify the role of the sintering temperature on the grain growth, mechanical properties and thermal stability of ZrO2 and WC components. Analysis results indicated that the composites sintered at 1350℃ and 1450℃ exhibited the highest tetragonal ZrO2 phase transformability, maximum toughness, and hardness and an optimal flexural strength. Chemical reaction of ZrO2 and C, originating from the graphite die, was detected in the composite PeCS for 20 min at 1850℃ in vacuum.

Crowdsourcing is an innovative business practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content or even funds by soliciting contributions from a large group of people （the ＇Crowd＇）. The potential benefits of utilizing crowdsourcing in product design are well-documented, but little research exists on what are the barriers and opportunities in adopting crowdsourcing in new product development （NPD） of manufacturing SMes. In order to answer the above questions, a Proof of Market study is carried out on crowdsourcing-based product design under an Innovate UK funded Smart project, which aims at identifying the needs, challenges and future development opportunities associated with adopting crowdsourcing strategies for NPD. The research findings from this study are reported here and can be used to guide future development of crowdsourcing-based collaborative design methods and tools and provide some practical references for industry to adopt this new and emerging collaborative design method in their business.

No evidence for a genetic association between female mating preference and male secondary sexual trait in a Lake Victoria cichlid fish

Sexual selection by female mating preference for male nuptial coloration has been suggested as a driving force in therapid speciation of Lake Victoria cichlid fish. This process could have been facilitated or accelerated by genetic associations betweenfemale preference loci and male coloration loci. Preferences, as well as coloration, are heritable traits and are probably determinedby more than one gene. However, little is known about potential genetic associations between these traits. In turbid water,we found a population that is variable in male nuptial coloration from blue to yellow to red. Males at the extreme ends of thephenotype distribution resemble a reproductively isolated species pair in clear water that has diverged into one species withblue-grey males and one species with bright red males. Females of the turbid water population vary in mating preference coincidingwith the male phenotype distribution. For the current study, these females were mated to blue males. We measured the colorationof the sires and male offspring. Parents-offspring regression showed that the sires did not affect male offspring coloration,which confirms earlier findings that the blue species breeds true. In contrast, male offspring coloration was determined by theidentity of the dams, which suggests that there is heritable variation in male color genes between females. However, we found thatmating preferences of the dams were not correlated with male offspring coloration. Thus, there is no evidence for strong geneticlinkage between mating preference and the preferred trait in this

The off-host survival and viability of a native and non-native fish louse （Argulus, Crustacea： Branchiura）

Fish ectoparasites are introduced to water bodies or aquaculture systems along with their hosts. Argulid fish lice can survive off-host for a given time, and in spite of quarantine measures might also be introduced via the transfer of water. However, they must cope with varying abiotic conditions without access to food. We investigated the effect of temperature (5 to 28oC) on the off-host survival time ofArgulus japonicus, an invasive species which is apparently increasing its distribution, and compared this with the europeanA. foliaceus. A clear effect of temperature on the off-host survival time of all stages of both species was demonstrated. Larval and juvenileA. japonicussurvived up to 9 days at 22oC and in the case of adults up to 13 days at 15oC. By comparison, larvalA. foliaceussurvived up to 5 days at 15oC, adults up to 14 days at 9oC and juveniles up to 7 days at 9oC and 15oC. Thus,A. japonicusis more resistant to starvation at higher temperatures under controlled off-host conditions andA. foliaceusis more resistant to starvation at lower temperatures. Infectivity ofA. japonicusdecreased linearly with the time spent off-host after 2 days for larvae and 4 days for adults. Temperature only had a significant effect on the infectivity of both developmental stages after 24 hours off-host between 13–23oC for larvae and 13–18oC for adults. In conclusion both species can potentially survive off-host periods in water transports for up to 13–14 days as adults. Their survival is shorter as larvae. This study demonstrates that transportation of water has the potential to introduceArgulusspecies.

Coronary leukocyte activation in relation to progression of coronary artery disease

Leukocyte activation has been linked to atherogenesis, but there is little in vivo evidence for its role in the progression of atherosclerosis. We evaluated the predictive value for progression of coronary artery disease （CAD） of leukocyte activation markers in the coronary circulation. Monocyte and neutrophil CDllb, neutrophil CD66b expression and intracellular neutrophil myeloperoxidase （MPO） in the coronary arteries were determined by flow cytometry in patients undergoing coronary angiography. The primary outcome included fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction or arterial vascular intervention due to unstable angina pectoris. In total 99 subjects who were included, 70 had CAD at inclusion （26 patients had single-vessel disease, 18 patients had two- vessel disease and 26 patients had three-vessel disease）. The median follow-up duration was 2242 days （interquartile range： 2142-2358）. During follow-up, 13 patients （13%） developed progression of CAD. Monoeyte CDllb, neutrophil CDllb and CD66b expression and intraceilular MPO measured in blood obtained from the coronary arteries were not associated with the progression of CAD. These data indicate that coronary monocyte CDllb, neutrophil CDllb and CD66b expression and intracellular MPO do not predict the risk of progression of CAD.

Global and Regional Surface Nitrogen Balances in Intensive Agricultural Production Systems for the Period 1970-2030

Global nitrogen (N) budgets for intensive agricultural systems were compiled for a 0.5 by 0.5 degree resolution. These budgets include N inputs (N fertilizer, animal manure, biological N fixation and atmospheric N deposition) and outputs (N removal from the field in harvested crops and grass and grass consumption by grazing animals, ammonia volatilization,denitrification and leaching). Data for the historical years 1970 and 1995 and a projection for 2030 were used to study changes in the recovery of N and the different loss terms for intensive agricultural systems. The results indicate that the overall system N recovery and fertilizer use efficiency slowly increased in the industrialized countries between 1970 and 1995, the values for developing countries have decreased in the same period. For the coming three decades our results indicate a rapid increase in both the industrialized and developing countries. High values of ＞ 80% for fertilizer use efficiency may be related to surface N balance deficits, implying a depletion of soil N and loss of soil fertility. The projected intensification in most developing countries will cause a gradual shift from deficits to surpluses in the coming *** projected fast growth of crop and livestock production, and intensification and associated increase in fertilizer inputs will cause a major increase in the surface N balance surplus in the coming three decades. This implies increasing losses of N compounds to air (ammonia, nitrous oxide and nitric oxide), and groundwater and surface water (nitrate).

In recent years the occurrence of civilisation related diseases such as diabetes and obesity is increasing at a dramatic rate. This results in a growing consumer awareness of relationships between diet and health. Industry is respond ing to this trend by introducing products with a healthy image, including products with dietary fibre. every year about 500 products are being launched globally with statements regarding their fibre content. Dietary fibre is usually defined as "the edible parts of plants or analogous carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion and absorption in the human small intestine with complete or partial fermentation in the large intestine. Dietary fibre includes polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, lignin, and associated substances. Dietary fibres promote beneficial physiological effects including laxation, and/or blood cholesterol attenuation, and/or blood glucose attenuation" (AACC, 2001).
