The effect of temperature on the electrical conductivity （σ） and Seebeck coefficient （S） of n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers （CNFs）and poly（vinylidene fluoride）(PVDF) melt-mixed with 15 wt%of those CNFs is *** 40°C,the CNFs show stable n-type character (S=-4.8μV·K-1) with anσof ca.165 S·m-1,while the PVDF/CNF composite film shows anσof ca.9 S·m-1and near-zero S (S=-0.5μV·K-1).This experimental reduction in S is studied by the density functional tight binding （DFTB） method revealing a contact electron transfer from the CNFs to the PVDF in the ***,in the temperature range from 40°C to 100°C,theσ（T） of the CNFs and PVDF/CNF film,successfully described by the 3D variable range hopping （VRH） model,is explained as consequence of a thermally activated backscattering *** the contrary,the S（T）from 40°C to 100°C of the PVDF/CNF film,which satisfactorily matches the model proposed for some.multi-walled carbon nanotube （MWCNT）doped mats;however,it does not follow the increase in S（T） found for *** these findings are presented with the aim of discerning the role of these n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers on theσand S of their melt-mixed polymer composites.

Control-based Fault Current Limiter for Minimizing Impact of Distributed Generation Units on Protection Systems

Distributed generation units(DGUs)bring some problems to the existing protection system,such as those associated with protection blinding and sympathetic *** is known that fault current limiters(FCLs)help minimize the negative impact of DGUs on the protection *** this paper,a control-based FCL is proposed,i.e.,the FCL is integrated into the DGU control *** this end,a predictive control strategy with fault current limitation is *** this way,a DGU is controlled,not only for power exchange with the power grid but also to limit its fault current *** proposal is posed as a constrained optimization problem allowing taking into account the current limit explicitly in the design process as a closed-loop solution.A linear approximation is proposed to cope with the inherent nonlinear *** proposal does not require incorporating extra equipment or mechanisms in the control loop,making the design process *** evaluate the proposed control-based FCL,both protection blinding and sympathetic tripping scenarios are *** control confines the DGU currents within the constraints quickly,avoiding large transient ***,the impact on the protection system is reduced without the necessity that the DGU goes out of service.

Treating protein-rich wastewater using cost-effective and simple-structured single-stage reactors presents several *** this study,we applied an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(AnSBR)to treat protein-rich wastewater from a *** focused on identifying the key factors influencing the removal of chemical oxygen demand(COD)and the settling performance of the *** AnSBR achieved a maximum total COD removal of 90%,a protein degradation efficiency exceeding 80%,and a COD to methane conversion efficiency of over 70%at organic loading rates of up to 6.2 g COD L^(-1)d^(-1).We found that the variations in both the organic loading rate within the reactor and the hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank had a significant effect on COD *** hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank and the reactor,which determined the ammonification efficiencies and the residual carbohydrate concentrations in the reactor liquid,affected the sludge ***,the genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1,known as protein-and lipids-degraders,was predominant in the *** analysis showed a significant correlation between the core microbiome and ammonification efficiency,highlighting the importance of protein degradation as the governing process in the *** results will provide valuable insights to optimise the design and operation of AnSBR for efficient treatment of protein-rich wastewater.

Background Treeline ecotones of Mediterranean ecoregions have been affected by the increasing intensity and severity of droughts. even though the effect of droughts on forest dynamics has been widely documented, knowledge is relatively scarce of how extreme climate episodes affect the hydraulic structure and, therefore, the phys-iology of woody plants. The Mediterranean Andes have experienced an uninterrupted period of drought since 2010, including an extremely dry year in 2019 with approximately 80% rainfall deficit. Here, we investigated shifts in wood anatomical and physiological traits of Kageneckia angustifolia, an endemic treeline species, in response to this drought *** We evaluated the xylem plasticity of three K. angustifolia populations across their natural distribution(31–35° SL) based on anatomical(vessel structure and distribution) and physiological(intrinsic water-use efficiency) variables in the tree rings. We focused on the period 2000–2020 that corresponds to before the megadrought(2000–2007),(ii) megadrought(2008–2018) and(iii) hyperdrought(2019–2020). The variables were annualized and analyzed by linear mixed-effects *** Our results provide insights to the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying the resilience of treeline forests to persistent droughts in central Chile. We found that the extreme drought in 2019–2020 triggered shifts in vessel size and frequency that increased hydraulic safety. These significant shifts in vessel traits occurred in parallel with a decrease in pit aperture area and an increase in water-use efficiency, further increasing the resilience of K. angustifolia to extreme drought *** Our results revealed coordinated shifts in vessel size and frequency and water-use efficiency in response to the megadrought, thereby reducing vulnerability to hydraulic failure. effects of fertilization on radial growth of Pinus pinea explored hourly using dendrometers

Background Stone pine(Pinus pinea), a drought-resistant species, has significant socio-economic benefits and increasing interest for the establishment of productive plantations in several countries, especially in a climate change context. Monitoring hourly stem diameter variations contributes to the understanding of the tree-growth response to changes in environmental conditions and management. By monitoring the diameter expansion of tree stems, high-resolution band dendrometers were used to study the development of adult trees growing in a semi-arid coastal environment of central Chile under fertilized and non-fertilized soil conditions through the span of a *** Short cycles(ere few in fertilized and non-fertilized trees(6 and 4, respectively), whereas long cycles(> 28 h) occurred at a higher frequency in fertilized trees(16 vs 6). Most of the circadian cycles were regular(24 ± 3 h). The longest cycle duration(59 h) was observed in fertilized trees during spring. In all seasons, each phase of the circadian cycle, especially during the stem diameter increment phase(P3, irreversible growth), started earlier in fertilized than in control trees. P3 duration was significantly longer in fertilized than in control trees in springtime. The maximum shrinkage(P1) was observed in summer for both treatments. Stem diameter increased faster in fer-tilized than in control trees throughout the year, with the highest accumulation occurring in spring and the lowest in autumn. The daily variability pattern showed lower growth under high temperature across *** This study highlights the importance of fertilization in enhancing stone pine diameter growth. This cultural practice should be further explored to contribute to the mitigation of climate change effects in semi-arid environments.
