Taxonomy and phylogeny of operculate discomycetes: Pezizomycetes

The class Pezizomycetes is monophyletic within the subdivision Pezizomycotina. The main distinguishing character of thisclass is operculate asci, although in some taxa this character has been lost. The circumscription of the families and genericlevel delimitation in Pezizomycetes is still controversial, although several molecular phylogenetic studies have beenpublished on this group. This paper reviews 21 families of Pezizomycetes including five new families, which are introduced here, viz. Kallistoskyphaceae, Pseudombrophilaceae, Pulvinulaceae, Strobiloscyphaceae and Tarzettaceae. Moreover, this study provides a modified backbone tree based on phylogenetic analysis of five combined loci. Descriptions andillustrations of representative taxa for the families are provided from collections made in China, Thailand and the UK,herbarium material from international herbaria (FH, FLAS, H, HKAS and MA) and the literature. Pezizales separates intosix major clades. Clade 1 of Pezizales includes the families Ascobolaceae and Pezizaceae. Clade 2 is the new familyKallistoskyphaceae. Clade 3 comprises the families Caloscyphaceae, Karstenellaceae and Rhizinaceae. Clade 4 representsthe families Discinaceae, Helvellaceae, Morchellaceae, Tuberaceae and Underwoodia columnaris lineage. Clade 5includes Chorioactidaceae, Sarcoscyphaceae and Sarcosomataceae and Clade 6 comprises Ascodesmidaceae, Glaziellaceae, Otideaceae, Pseudombrophilaceae, Pulvinulaceae, Pyronemataceae, Strobiloscyphaceae and Tarzettaceae. Newsequence data belonging to ITS, LSU, SSU, TeF, RPB2 gene regions from 40 pezizalian species are provided here. Thepaper provides a working document for apothecial Pezizomycetes which can be modified as new data comes to light. It ishoped that by illustrating taxa we provide stimulation and interest in the operculate discomycetes, so that further research iscarried out on this remarkable, but poorly studied group of fungi.

This study reports the frequency of decay(stem/butt rot)of Xylocarpus granatum trees at Hat Khanom-Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park,Nakhonsithammarat province,and other locations in Thailand,and the identification of purported causal basidiomycetes based on morphological and molecular *** survey plots at Hat KhanomMu Ko Thale Tai National Park were established and the incidence of butt rot *** stem/butt rot incidence of *** trees varied from 40.9 to 94.4%with an average of 85.5%along all four *** in Plot 2 supported the heaviest incidence rate(94.4%),with the lowest rate in Plot 3(40.9%).Ninety-two basidiomes were collected,and 46 fungal strains(50%)isolated into axenic culture,the majority associated with tree roots(68.5%of all collections)with 31.5%from the tree *** results,based on LSU and ITS1,2,5.8 S rDNA analyses,confirmed that all samples belonged to the poroid genus Fulvifomes in the Hymenochaetaceae within the Hymenochaetales,*** 43 specimens sequenced grouped into three clades;one clade comprised specimens isolated from only the trunks and branches(14 strains),while the remainders were from roots(29 strains)and shown to be salt *** stem/butt rot strains formed unique phylotypes which did not group with other known Fulvifomes species.

An asymptotic analysis is presented for a dynamic problem of a semi-infinite isotropic thermoelastic solid with a small surface breaking crack. The exterior surface of the solid is subjected to a series of short thermal pulses. The crack surface is traction free and an ideal thermal contact is assumed across the crack. The stress intensity factor is asymptotically evaluated as a function of the crack depth and time. The effect of a boundary layer associated with the diffusive term is identified. The theoretical model is supplied with numerical simulations.

The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand is an invasive insect that frequently causes hemlock （Tsuga spp.） mortality in the eastern United States. Studies have shown that once healthy hemlocks become infested by the adelgid, nutrients are depleted from the tree, leading to both tree decline and a reduction of the adelgid population. Since A. tsugae is dependent on hemlock for nutrients, feeding on trees in poor health may affect the ability of the insect to obtain necessary nutrients and may consequently affect their physiological and population health. Trees were categorized as lightly or moderately impacted by A. tsugae based on quantitative and qualitative tree health measurements. Population health ofA. tsugae on each tree was determined by measuring insect density and peak mean fecundity; A. tsugae physiological health was determined by measuring insect biomass, total carbon, carbohydrate, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen levels. Adelges tsugae from moderately impacted trees exhibited significantly greater fecundity than from lightly impacted trees. However, A. tsugae from lightly impacted hemlocks contained significantly greater levels of carbohydrates, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen. While the results of the physiological analysis generally support our hypothesis that A. tsugae on lightly impacted trees are healthier than those on moderately impacted trees, this was not reflected in the population health measurements. Adelges tsugae egg health in response to tree health should be verified. This study provides the first examination of A. tsugae physiological health in relation to standard A. tsugae population health measures on hemlocks of different health levels.

Decidual natural killer （dNK） cells express an array of activation receptors to regulate placental immunity and development during early pregnancy. We investigated the functional character of human dNK cells during the first and second trimester of gestation and the interaction between dNK and trophoblast cells. Although the frequency of CD56＋CD16-dNK among the total CD45＋ leukocytes did not change over this period, the expression of the activating receptors, NKp80 and NKG2D, was greatly upregulated. We observed a significantly higher number of extravillous trophoblast cells in proximity to the dNK cells in the first trimester in comparison with the second trimester decidua. NKG2D expression by first trimester dNK cells was decreased when co-cultured with the HTR-8 trophoblast cell line. In the second trimester, functional markers of dNK activation, i.e., angiogenic factor production （e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin-8, interferon-gamma）, remained stable despite an increase in NKp80 or NKG2D surface expression. Furthermore, the degranulation capacity of dNK cells, as assessed by CD107a, was decreased in the second trimester. We suggest that in the first trimester, trophoblast-dNK interactions generate a population of dNK cells with a suppressed activating phenotype. In the second trimester, the loss of trophoblast-dNK interactions led to the inhibition of dNK cell function, although their activating receptor expression was increased. We speculate that during pregnancy, two mechanisms operate to modulate the dNK cell activation：suppression of activating receptor levels in the first trimester by trophoblasts and disengagement of receptor-ligand coupling in the second trimester.

An understanding of the relative importance of extrinsic and intrinsic factors in determining the potential distribution and mating success of individuals is critical for the successful monitoring and management of pest species. Using a combination of field observations and a caged field experiment, we explored the roles of environmental and individual variation on the formation of mating aggregations and mating success in the buprestid beetle Capnodis tenebrionis （Linnaeus, 1767）, a pest species of stone fruit trees. Our field observations revealed that the formation of aggregations is influenced by a range of environmental factors including temperature, photoperiod, and population density. However, aggregations were not at random and were more likely to occur on the section of the plant with highest incidence of solar radiation and thus higher temperatures. Data from our experiment with caged beetles in the field further indicate that the reproductive behavior of this species varies with temperature. The probability of a successful mating occurring was also positively related to both male and female size. Females of C. tenebrionis mate several times over a 4-h period, but generally not with the same male. Information obtained from these studies is useful to define the most appropriate time for pest control, especially adopting strategies that interfere with reproduction.

Conservation of endangered plant species requires a prerequisite basic knowledge of their taxonomy and *** in the Cordillera Central Range,several species have not been studied,even though this area harbors a unique type of vegetation not found in other parts of the *** study documents the morpho-anatomical characteristics of Rhododendron subsessile Rendle,one of the unique and endangered fl ora in the *** species exhibits a morphology typical of plants in high elevations,being a hardy shrub with small tough leaves,and showy pink fl owers that rival those of commercial rhododendron *** fi ndings on the species morphology include a variable number of corolla lobes,stamens and a description of its fruits and *** anatomical features of the species are reported here for the fi rst *** plant exhibits a typical dicot anatomy with dorsiventral leaves,woody stem and root system with the usual arrangement of periderm followed by secondary phloem,vascular cambium,secondary xylem with vessel elements and pith(in the case of the stem).A unique characteristic was identifi ed as the biseriate upper epidermis of the *** themorphological and anatomical features of the species should prove valuable as input baseline information in formulating measures for its conservation.
